Latest Oracle Java works fine on Linux so I don't really understand that part of your statement... I have no experience on Mac though.

Works just fine on Linux.  I play Wurm Online on my Debian box almost every day.  I'm assuming WO and WU are the same.

WO and WU are almost the same, except that there is no Mac version for WU. Thus, the suggestion.
I've been trying to play it through an emulator but never got it to launch.

I know this post is old, but eh. Trying anyway.

Yes.

There has been something stated about this previously but so long ago I just vaguely recall that been "not planned atm", or maybe " maybe in a distant future".

https://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp   Java's still being made for Mac (and most definitely Linux).  That's the easy part.... and it doesn't help much unfortunately.

Looked into it, tldr Mac's going as proprietary as possible, which has effectively shot down the possibilities of Steam Play  (Steam's built-in software to run some Win games on Linux) being launched for Mac in any foreseeable future.

So your two options are:

a)  Run on WINE, it may or may not run well (at least Wurm is not a DirectX game so that should improve its chances quite a bit).

b)  Dual-boot Linux.  Don't give me that look.  Ubuntu flavors can be installed on a Mac, haven't really looked into other distros to be honest.  I for one favor the one that uses MATE (Linux has different gui's to keep it simple.  GNOME, KDE, MATE.  It's the fluffy interface, OS remains otherwise the same).

https://ubuntu-mate.org/download/  <--- I picked this one 'cause it's lightweight while still purty.

https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-create-a-usb-stick-on-macos#0  <---- how to make the bootable USB.

OR

https://unetbootin.github.io/  <--- I favor this to make my bootables to be honest.

And so you can make it look familiarly MacOS-like,  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dt9FzgGGTgw

Wine vs. Dual-boot  <---- Try in that order.

WINE can be very reliable if you don't mind googling up certain issues and applying the workarounds.  If you're not too tech savvy however, this may be a painful experience BUT you don't risk your system in the process.

Dual-booting into Linux, you may have to borrow a geeky friend's time for running that install the first time, SPECIALLY IF YOU CAN'T TELL ONE DRIVE FROM THE OTHER SO THAT YOU DON'T WIPE YOUR MACOS IN THE INSTALL PROCESS.  If you know how to install your own Linux, odds are that you've tried Wine and it just wasn't going your way.

Good thing about Linux once it's running:   You don't really have to do much else beyond installing Steam and Wurm.  You also get to run Steam Play which'll widen your range of available games (caveat emptor:  research before you buy a Windows game you plan to run with Steam Play).  Many games are becoming "natively" and natively available for Linux too since SteamOS is just another linux flavor.  Also, pretty much all the non-gaming day-to-day software will have a linux version or linux equivalent.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Important extra tip:  When creating the Ubuntu bootable USB, there's an option in Unetbootin to give Ubuntu a couple of gigas to "save changes".  Use it.  When you boot from the USB, pick the option to "Run/test Ubuntu without installing", it's gonna be slow as molasses, be patient, it's running off USB not a hard drive.   When it loads, open the terminal and type in "sudo apt-get install gparted".  GParted will allow you to manually create the empty partition that's gonna take Linux BEFORE running Ubuntu's installation which is a bit fickle on how it manages that.   Then reboot from the stick and install your linux normally.

Extra tip 2:   Sometimes the boot loader (the menu you'll get letting you pick between Ubuntu and Windows/MacOS) gets a bit borked in the install.  If that happens, load the "test ubuntu" off the USB again (sorry lol! been there).  You'll wanna go to https://linuxconfig.org/ubuntu-boot-repair and scroll down to "Add the PPA" and follow the instructions from there, it's quite simple really.  The console commands are on the site so you just have to copy paste them in line by line, a fairly fast procedure.

(I clearly favored the dual boot, that's because I don't have a Mac to test Wine on)

If someone goes for dual boot, a couple of extra tips:

During the GParted bit, the empty partition for the Linux install has to be "Ext4" filesystem, and the mount point "/".

Also create a 2-4GB separate partition with "linuxswap" instead of Ext4.

Once linux is up and running, I suggest doing "sudo apt-get install synaptic".  I'm not a fan of the usual "software managers" and if you ever need a specific package, Synaptic's usually way more comfortable to find and install it.

Further info:

Yes, linux can read/write mac partitions with a few more steps.

https://superuser.com/questions/1327627/how-to-access-view-macos-files-from-ubuntu-18-04

Once again, lots of gibberish if you're not familiar with linux, I was there once upon a time, but the guy in the reply, as with most linux help threads, the copypastes are there for you to get the job done without knowing what you just did.

You may wanna create a thread in the WU section at https://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/forum/257-unlimited-questions-and-confusions/ asking directly if anyone's running WU from a Mac so that they can point you to their method (most likely translating to proper Wine configuration if they got it up on MacOS).  I'll ask around on my server see if a mac user materializes.  If you guys end up needing to dual boot, we can create a "setting up linux" thread with more details later down the line.
