The humor of my first days in Wurm

Recommended Posts

A couple days ago, my friend asked me if I remembered the first place we settled in. We were there for one night, but it was where I fell in love with the game.

So it made me wonder how I thought about the game back when I started, and started reading chat logs I have saved from then.

What silly things did you say when you were a newbie? If you still happen to have access to those logs, do you mind sharing? I will start with an event on day 3 of my adventures in Wurm.

As we walked from the portal area coming from GV, I encountered this man on a horse who I thought was an NPC. After some confusion, he set both my friend and I with some food, a lump of iron, some tools and two cows to ride... yes, cows. We laughed so much at how silly we looked riding cows, but it was epic. We settled in a water level and horribly wet area and there it was where I cut my first tree.

The next day I got a boat from a kind soul and we went elsewhere (Xanadu) where I settled. I took a moment to send our fellow wurmian a chat convo:

Logging started 2016-11-10
[23:32:46] <Angelklaine> hi!
[23:32:46] <System> Nirav is not currently available, please try again later.
[00:22:09] <Angelklaine> Hello!

[00:43:23] <Nirav> hello
[01:24:11] <Angelklaine> hey
[01:24:14] <Angelklaine> sorry to bother you
[01:24:36] <Nirav> s cool what's up?  i keel gettinmg busy
[01:24:54] <Nirav> forget to look at this
[01:25:22] <Angelklaine> We got a boat from someone else and moved to another place. Found a great place to settle. We left two cows, a pig and a chicken in a pen where you showed us
[01:25:51] <Angelklaine> Didnt feel right killing your cow since it was a fast cow
[01:25:59] <Angelklaine> and there is another young one
[01:26:22] <Nirav> ok, thank yuo - will go them later.
[01:28:58] <Angelklaine> no, thanks for everything you did for us. You have no idea how much it helped
[01:29:01] <Angelklaine> especially the iron
[01:29:07] <Nirav> awesome
[01:30:02] <Angelklaine> I went premium ^_^ so I will be around!
[01:30:08] <Nirav> yay!

there are some very simple things that you do not think of if anyone new asks questions...one of my first questions was how to cut down a tree, and they said that i should activate my hatchet and rightclick the tree. tried for 5minutes without success till i got the answer...click the TILE, not the tree XD

I thought I had a very fast cow. Imagine.

I think I am going to breed five speed cows now on Chaos.

I remember the first time I tried to actually make something, a cart. We didn't have a crafting window back then and I was told to read the event messages. So the event window kept telling me I must improve the "whatever" with a "whatever" before continuing.  So I kept doing that and after a very long time finally asked how long it was going to take to make the pieces for the cart since it seemed endless.  My friend laughed and told me improving is optional.  It hadn't occurred to her that I'd need to be told that.  :)

Hmm I was expecting more screaming and death from giant spiders (that while giant I never saw coming)... like in my own first experiences.

Not knowing the attack range of the mobs, I remember the first wolf I saw, and waiting patiently for it to move away - it was probably more than 20 tiles away lol.

When venturing into new lands always the quiet one am I, watching, observing and saying little. I suppose that's why the woodlands have always appealed to me, also quiet in their swaying unity with the winds. I can still remember the first day I arrived on Golden Valley and wandered off down the cobbled paths to some small wooden house hidden in the woods. Eventually I got that character so lost that I just created a new one and headed more on the main roadways to settle at Glitterdale.

People came and went. I found CA Help to be the best tab to have open though and learned much just from the questions that others asked that were responded to. Yea, reading the Wiki too. Not much for idle chatter I guess.

The gentle swaying and creaking of the trees.

The rush of a bird in flight.

The bellows of deer on the tundra.

The waves of grass rustling to and fro.

The distant screams and thumps of players dying to trolls.

Mmm bliss.

probably the main things I remember was not realising targetting doesnt stop when your out of range and constantly wondering why I wasnt doing any damage to the creatures attacking me or why the guards wouldn't respond whilst I was targetting something I pasted miles away and having Miskleur laugh at me for running from the deeds spirit templar the first time I saw it

Does anyone have any logs? Logs are what gives life to our stories. I nearly pissed myself reading the things I wrote as a fresh off the boat newb.

First time I logged into Wurm was on old JKH in Newtown. I walked north over the landbridge and came across a Guard Tower. Right clicked a guard and saw an attack option.

Needless to say, that didn't end well for me.

I logged in to the old New Town on JKH too, walked over to Dottie's deed and turned around her statues, because there was no permission check back in June 2008. Then she told me to leave or I will be KOS. I had no idea what KOS means so I followed some of her friends into an off deed camp. A few days later I made my way to Akhenaten. That was a hell of a trip, ended up on Axe Mountain the first time.

I probably hold the record for getting lost the fastest ever. I got dropped in Newtown on JKH, spun around, noticed the town token. I walked down a street, turned left. Or right? Then turned around to walk back to the token. It wasn't there. Spent a few minutes looking for the automap, too ^^

After doing some tutorial stuff (you know, the one where you had to walk out of town by a fair bit to find a tree to cut down), I met someone who was on his way to his deed somewhere on the north coast and invited me to join. We legged it up the road for what seemed forever, then jumped in the water and swam for another few hours (outswiming a croc with ease, them were the days). It wasn't a deed as such, just some players living near eachother. I picked the top of a small hill to build my first 1x1. Took me a long time because the hill wasn't called apple tree hill for nothing.

Imagine that, a noob cutting down apple trees to get 80 planks... Once I finished it, I turned around, just in time to jump inside, out of the way of a wolf who must have been watching me for hours.

I don't have any logs prior to Sept. of 2008, so I can't post any of my newb conversations.

I remember during my first two weeks of playing, I was living in an off-deed mine that Goon had created as a "hotel" for newbies just south of NT. One of the other "tenants" had just run into a croc that had tore him up. 6 of us, unarmored, decided we'd stomp out that croc's existence and grab our associate's death pile.

Needless to say, there were 6 unarmored noobs that were screaming in local right before their death piles also littered the ground.

I also had an instance where i was stuck in a mine pit for 8 or 9 days. /suicide was not an option for me because I was a newb with no deed, my off deed house had a gated (and locked) fence around it, and my keys were on my character. So, I spent more than a week using a fresh alt to mine down to where my character was stuck.

I had no idea that I could create a pile of my crap on the sloped part of the floor of the mine pit, where my alt from up above could've easily grabbed it.

I still have the logs from 2009-01-18, my very first day in Wurm, arriving in the MR deed of Glitterdale on GV. Glitterdale at that time consisted of a token, an NPC, and a million fruit trees. I remember falling down a hill, then being eaten by a croc. Managing to retrieve my corpse, then running through a thorn bush, then being eaten by a croc.

GV memories include:

Living near a HotS player called Khainegomm, who would occasionally have GM Qualia (also HotS) hanging out inbetween emergency callouts

Qualia ripping out the hearts of ravening monsters Innocent defenceless creatures of the forest

50kg large anvils

Nearly banishing Enki to the abyssal-plane-beneath-the-server after I opened a tunnel entrance, which became a rift into...nothingness. What appeared to be a gentle slope was actually so steep it couldn't be walked up, and needed climbed. Enki teleported over to fix it, but landed on the slope, and promptly started to be sucked into the rifto`doom

First days on Independence

So my starting story begins with someone asking if i was his girlfriend, in which I may have said yes, and then hinted at needing to see other people.

After a severe beating in a brief sparring period (some people just cant handle a random pretending to be their girlfriend and breaking up with them)  and the subsequent healing, I then set east with my friends, getting to the grand steppe, where I was mauled to death by a hell hound while my friends hid in a little 1x1 nearby, not telling me they were there in case the hell hound chased me into the house and ate them all.

after that, killing a mountain lion on a 2am trip to north indy, and I knew i was hooked.

I made a wooden pen in some guys perimeter, he was nice enough to come out and help me find a proper place to settle on pristine to stop me from building wooden fences/digging/cutting down all his trees around his perimeter.

My first week in Wurm, I went on a Grand Adventure up in a remote winding mountain road with twisty turns marked by stone demon statues. Then out of the blue, I got a text message in my Event window:

A Young Fat Cliffchaser grazes.

I turned around and ran without stopping until I got back to the bottom of that mountain. I had NO idea what a 'cliffchaser' was, and I really did not care to learn. I was pretty sure it sounded like something that would eat me. It took me several weeks before I realized it was ... a baby horse.

Another time, I was pushing my way through an Olive grove, when my mouse highlighted an object somewhere in front of me but behind the trees:  "Jackal."   I thought for sure there was a jackal just ahead of me, and again turned and ran.

I ran a LOT, those first days.
