Glimmersteel Fo Rune does nothing

Recommended Posts

Hello,

used it on a rug

Examine text: [01:33:41] A single glimmersteel rune of Fo has been attached to it, so it will increase skill level bonus on skill checks (10%)

Before rune: [18:47:46] Meditating increased by 0,0244 to 83,7871

After rune: [00:58:08] Meditating increased by 0,0244 to 83,8115

The text is confusing, but considering its a GLIMMERSTEEL rune, the effect should be great - what I understood is that it increases the tick size (skill level bonus) when you do get ticks (on skill checks) - that lead me to believe it does do that, cause like other ada/glimmer/seryll runes that offer 10% speed etc, the effect should be clearly visible - in this case it is not

I was led to understand what it does is when the game does a skill roll for an action the rune gives you a 10% bonus to that skill roll thus determining the outcome....please correct me if I'm wrong

hypothetical example - Rune added to small anvil, average lockpick ql increases because the skill rolls are 10% higher than usual

Correct, it essentially raises your effective skill (aka skill level), it does NOT improve skillgain.

This is not a bug

Well this seems like a super complete bust on 0.5kg of glimmer spent.....

Can someone please rename the description of the rune in a LESS confusing way using regular english words (like what is a skill check? lol; what is a skill level bonus?)

Proposed:

Examine text: [01:33:41] A single glimmersteel rune of Fo has been attached to it, so it will increase your effective skill on the item used. (10%)

Also for a glimmersteel rune, it does surprisingly nothing...maybe a rethink in what the rune actually does? We are talking about glimmersteel here not say....iron

because its not direct effective skill, when you perform an action, there is your skill and a bonus. Bonus comes from other factors (village bonuses, parent skill, things like that). The 10% provides a boost to that bonus, not to the actual sklill (else you'd wind up with 91 skill being effectively 100 skill) As your skill gets higher the bonus becomes effectively smaller.

it's a confusing scenario, but it is hard to explain it any other way, and the wording we used was the most accurate we could do

Note that there is no way in-game to be sure whether a skill roll/action gets a "bonus" or not, although most things do have it in some form. The effect in practice will be quite subtle.

I doubt it, since the statuette isn't really used as the "tool" in any meaningful sense.

That brings up two questions, actually:

  1. What zigozag said.
  2. There's normally a maximum of 70 on the bonus value; does this rune let you bypass that, going up to a max of 77? Note that this is unlikely to matter for anything but channeling.

@Retrograde, could you come back to this thread and explain this more, please? The rune's description talks about a thing majority of players have 0 understanding of... At least, where does this bonus come from, is it the same for all skills, does it even matter at high skills? Rune choice is important since there can only be one per item, but  description complicates that.
