Actually, i would completely UNINSTALL the 32 bit version of java (which causes memory issues & crashes) then use the offline manual 64-bit install at KrojinKin's link.

Technically you can run both the 32 & 64 boit javas however it often seems flaky on which it chooses to use, and having only the 64 bit should solve that.

You do NOT need a 64-bit browser.

You use a 32bit browser you will need java 32bit for sites that need to use java.

I have heard that is why some people keep both. I guess I have never run into any sites that needed to use Java (just javascript but that's entirely different)

What websites tend to use java? Web browser games like Runescape? One page mentioned Minecraft but maybe that was before it had a standalone java client.

I guess thats why when I click PLAY on the main Wurm website, it wants to download the JNLP to my hard drive again, to run outside the browser?

(In 2012, " According to new research from W3Techs, only 0.2% of all the websites in the world still use Java on the client side  "

64 bit java will run 32 bit java stuff you don't need 32 bit if you have 64 bit machine and OS just need the 64 bit java all this is done threw wow64. I run 32 bit java apps all the time with no 32 bit java installed.
