Posted November 21, 2016 I really appreciate the effort you are putting in Nappy. The way you describe PvE in a dangerous environment is exactly what I like. At first I felt a bit unwelcome because the attitude felt like "You are on a PvP server. Either you PvP or get out" I honestly just like PvE on pvp servers because it makes me feel like there's a purpose for everything I do. That I'm contributing to a war effort and not just gathering and building things just for the sake of building pretty houses. This is the first time I've been able to get into this game and stick with it for awhile.

Posted November 21, 2016 I was dying so much when I first played I felt like a noob. Now I can kill everything up to a spider without taking that much damage and it feels great. My fight skill is maxed right now and so is my halberd a polearms skill. I also maxed all my characteristics except for mind speed. Anyone know of a good way of training that one? Gains seem to have gotten really slow.

Posted November 22, 2016 (edited) Does weapon quality or type make any difference? Also anyone know what the strategy is for building a well fortified deed on the coast? I heard of common strategies like dirt walls, gatehouses, and multiple layers of walls. I don't know where to put these or what to use. I suppose there also may be other strategies that are done. I could only find one guide on this on the wiki named "Tactics" but it's outdated and all the image links are broken so I don't really know what it is talking about. Posted November 22, 2016 (edited) Desolation is now on Epoch 3 - Age of Corn - Hint #1 - There are three special skills this time. Report the special skill by /support and providing the skill name plus the maximum for that skill. First support ticket to report the skill will win. Note, of the three skills, two provide an individual reward while the third provides a choice of either an individual reward or a decision. Special skills are defined as skills that raise above the general skill cap. They are not characteristics - Hint #2 - LOOK to the SKY - Since farming will be playing a bigger role, crops are behaving a bit differently now - Farm tiles now count for culture - HINT #3 - Take a moment to relax..... - HINT #4 - Sharpen thy sword - more mobs and harder ones have been released into the world. Some of those mobs have been recognized as being particularly irritating so they have a special bounty bonus compared to normal - HINT #5 - It's always good to do some nice wholesome mining Variable skill gain rate has been tweaked since skill caps are getting higher. Net effect will be newer players who join in this epoch will catch up with veterans faster when veterans will also continue to advance at a good rate. Posted November 22, 2016 Why is the death timer so high? I had to wait 5 minutes to respawn since I died to the same troll twice.
Posted November 22, 2016 Prevents respawn pvp, we had a lot of instances where people would just constant respawn and charge out again. No victory possible for either side till someone got bored of respawning. Think it was supposed to be pvp only tho might not be directly controllable with the current mod. Posted November 22, 2016 oh okay. Would it still work well if it only affected those who died at the hands of a player?
Posted November 22, 2016 Think that is the end goal but it could just be a good punishment/ add severity to death.

Posted November 23, 2016 After observing, receiving some player feedback and experiencing the farming nerf as a player myself, I have reverted the nerf aspects of the farming change for now. As will become clear later in the epoch most of the nerf aspects will self clear however the pain point is too high for where we are right now. So crops no longer rot and once again you get two extra output.
Posted November 23, 2016 (edited) Of the four special skills in this Epoch, 3 have been discovered, 1 remains. To report the skill, /support with skill name and it's cap - if both are correct and you are first then you will win something. The remaining skill gives you a choice between an individual reward or a server impacting decision. Edited November 23, 2016 by Nappy

Posted November 24, 2016 Recently Desolation advanced to Epoch 3 - Age of Corn which is actually a surprisingly important Epoch. In historical terms as humans became stronger, wiser and more capable they (generally) began to move from being hunters/nomads into more of a farmer/settlement type of existence. This had several important benefits to them: 1) Farming allowed them to grow more food leading to a surplus 2) Surplus allowed specialists to come into existence 3) Specialist roles included professional warriors, priests, medicine and many other more specialized functions 4) These specialists in turn provided humans with the ability to begin to move beyond just reacting to the world around them. The early stages of actually influencing their surroundings began to occur In Desolation terms the combination of the advancement to Epoch 3 coupled with the discovery of all 4 special skills has set the stage for Desolationists to begin transitioning from reacting to the world around them to influencing it instead. Here are some of the key changes which allow this: - Farming skill can now go to 50. Allows a title (show off) and more importantly allows the creation of much better cotton etc for healing - Farm tiles now add to culture - Chain armor is introduced and it allows for a cap of 40 - Mining cap has increased to 40. This makes it far easier to improve the quality of armor and weapons then ever before - Fine carpentry has increased to 40. The discover of this key skill faces at least one question that will either result in an individual reward or a few additional questions that will lead to something that impacts the experience of all of Desolation - Religion is now available. While priests haven't yet developed, with time they will become available as the farming surplus grows to support the specialist classes - Meditation is now available. Choose your meditation path wisely. Should you decide to change paths the amount of time it requires to do so is far reduced compared to standard WO - Large carts now move significantly faster then previous epoch due to technological advancements in cart technology. After riding bulls and cows for the last epoch it has been discovered how to ride horses. Horses will increase the speed of travel even more. - Ship technology has also advanced beyond the simple rowboats of our forefathers - Masonry and the art of building a stone house has finally entered the world Mobs although difficult, with a bit of work on your characteristics and skills, are now at the point where you should be able to take more of them down then ever before. As roads continue to be built and forests replaced with farm fields the land of Desolation will continue to evolve. As future epochs arrive the importance and likelihood of PVP combat will also increase.
Posted November 25, 2016 Nappy, awesome explanation! For anyone who is interested there is a great theory about society advances through domestication of land and animals called Guns, Germs and Steel: Although, a small critique; There have been 'priests' or 'shamans' or 'medicine men' since the beginning of time. Most (all) societies have had them even prior to domestication since early (and late) societies revolved around worship of a deity.
