- Server has been moved to a new physical server in a new data center. Performance should be better and lag issues reduced 

- Some people are reporting the server not appearing in Steam server list - Connect by ip - 158.69.123.104 using the default port(3724) first connection server will appear in list again. I am looking into why this is happening
 
This server features extremely fast skill gain (100 x) and fast action timers (10 x). You are able to gain both meditation and faith very quickly. Body, Mind and Soul skills are capped at a maximum of 50 to allow new PVPers to easily and quickly catch up with players who have been on the server longer.

This is all designed to allow you to quickly gain the needed skills to gear up for friendly PVP matches. Archery towers have been improved and deeds now can have a maximum of 5 guards.

It is also a small 1024 server which should keep travel distances to a minimum and hopefully encourage more PVP.

Four kingdoms currently exist on the map, JK, MR, HOTS and Freedom. Selecting any of these kingdoms will place you at a bare minimum starting location (not really a traditional starter deed) consisting of a settlement token and a guard tower. You are encouraged to start carefully using the guard tower and nearby water to your advantage. Although skill gain will increase quickly, you are also starting on a server where mobs will be harder (no CR 3 against MOBS which is the typical WU default - here it is 1) and many of them are aggressive ( 80%).

In order to setup your first deed you will need to be in an area of kingdom influence which usually means building your own guard tower. Additionally no starter funds are provided so you will need to earn your deed money by hunting (bountymod is installed) or foraging (default random money is enabled).

Complete server configuration information is available on wurm-desolation.com. Whenever changes are made an update note will be issued.

The server is paid up until the beginning of August and is expected to stay available until that point in time. If people are using the server and fun is continuing then the server will likely continue past that point.

An ingame server map is available for people who have installed Ago's client modloader and have serverpacks enabled.

The motto of the server is Play fair, stay civil and have FUN! Let's try to stay true to that motto as we play together on this server.
 

All kingdoms have active players. Please join any kingdom you like and have fun on the server.

 

Some questions have come up around the different decisions that have been made for this server compared to others. Seemed like a good time to explain the thinking behind the differences.

 

1) Macroing is permitted on Desolation v3 

 

Wurm Unlimited provides no tools or mechanisms to prevent someone from macroing. Many server admins try to mediate this to some degree by declaring macroing illegal and then doing random spot checks on players that typically involve things like moving or teleporting or pushing the player to see how they react. The reality is that simply using a tool like Wurm Assistant you can setup alerts that prevent most of these things from working more then once. Unfortunately it also has two downsides, some innocent players get wrongfully accused of macroing and admin people end up spending huge amounts of time trying to catch macroing instead of having the opportunity to just play the game.

 

As a result on Desolation what we have tried to do is to work within what game mechanics allow us to do. By increasing the skill gain and action rates while also capping the maximum characteristic level possible most of the advantages gained by macroing are very limited and fleeting. So far there have not been examples of anyone who macros having a clear advantage over someone who doesn't. This hopefully leads to a much more fair playing field for everyone.

 

2) Glimmer, Adamantine and Scale are very commonly available

 

A decision was made to include Glimmer and Adamantine as veins you can mine on the map. Each one is capped at 1500 hits so while a vein will provide many suits it will also run out and require you to search for additional ones. With a custom modification the supply depot now gives out significant amounts of scale as well. 

 

Both of these things should have the following impacts. Everyone in the game will have access to high end armor types. Since it is so common the fear of losing it (and therefore not wearing it in battle) should be non-existent. An additional benefit is that by having more people in these armor types people should have longer PVP battles. Instead of going down in 1 or 2 hits maybe you will last 5 -7 instead. 

 

3) Supply depot moves randomly and with out notice. 

 

At random intervals the supply depot will be moved from one location to another. No notice will be provided. This will encourage searching for the depot leading to more PVP potential while also helping to reduce the common occurrence of alts camping on a depot.

 

4) Characteristics caps

 

All characteristics, body, mind and soul are capped at 50. This should make it very possible for someone new to the server to quickly catch up to someone who has been playing on the server for 3+ weeks. The longer time players won't be able to hit as hard when maxed out at 50 compared to what they could do at 70+ either leading to longer and hopefully more tactical PVP battles.

 

5) Client side modifications and clients

 

As with macroing WU provides no tools that help prevent people from using custom client-side modifications or even customized clients when playing the game. Some server admins ban the use of these items with no real way to make sure they are or are not in use. In reality just like in network security the people who write the custom client mods/clients will just program their creation to provide the correct responses that any server-side security mod would expect before allowing server access.

 

Formerly the best we could do was to inform people what the common client-side mods often in use are and hope that people don't use other mods like the treasure chest finder that really does make the game less fair for someone not using them.

 

We have now developed and loaded on the server a modloader compatible anti-cheat mod that prevents some of the reported cheats by more tightly controlling what information is delivered to the client. This mod will continue to evolve with time. If you know if a tool that makes the game unfair to everyone please inform GMNappy so we can look into ways to counter it.

 

6) Small server + faster horse/cart speeds leads to an even smaller server

 

We made the server the smallest size possible in order to try to have population congestion with kingdoms butting up against each other. By making horses and carts 25% faster it should also lead to the server seeming even smaller.

 

On a server where horses can go from one side to the other in under 10 minutes (with good traits, enchants and gear horses max out at about 50 km per hour currently) simply capping a tower can lead to an enemy rapid response force heading out in very short time once the tower capping messages start to be broadcast.

Current kingdom levels are approximately as follows:

 

BL/HOTS - 8

MR - 2

JK - 3

 

Please consider joining one of the kingdoms with lower numbers in order to help balance out the kingdoms more.

MR already have nice group, BL has a bigger group, and JK now seems to even out BL. Who wants to help MR and become the champion of magranon, who wants to rise the gorillas!! ;)

An additional thing that we are trying comes about as a result of reading the various threads discussing what may have changed PVP in negative ways in the past few years. It seems like common areas mentioned are:

 

Hell horses

Res stones

PMKs

 

We have decided not to place traders on the server at this time. This should prevent both Res stones and PMKs from being an option.

 

For whatever reason it seems that hell horses don't spawn on WU servers without the addition of a hell horse lair. We haven't placed these either so no hell horses.

 

As time passes the server population will weigh in on if these changes are positive or negative.

Join JK or MR, BL have so many meat running around.

 

Server is good,

Moonmetal veins are on, find one, have glimmer or addy!

Glimmer and Adamantine veins are 4 times harder to find then gold (which is usually the most rare vein type). Capped at 1500 hits per vein making it possible to make several armor sets from a vein while also making it necessary to search the server for more when the vein runs out.

Server is really fun, at first glance you would see 100x skill and think thats stupid it will be too fast and you wont be able to catch up, when actually it allows everyone to become pvp ready very quick.

SotG takes about 20 minutes to get so it doesnt create a gap between old and new players.

BL has the most players right now so if you're joining pick MR or JK to even out the teams some.

Mobs are about 3x harder so getting FS is more of a challenge.  FS looks to be one of the main things that will distinguish players apart from eachother, that and strategy.

 

Overall I've been having a lot of fun here and think its a very good server.

For those that want to know how fast it takes to get 70 meditation:
[14:55:06] Meditating increased by 1.0000 to 2.0000

 

[15:12:34] Meditating increased by 0.1221 to 70.0918

[15:53:45] Meditating increased by 0.0189 to 90.0019

 

That was without enchanted rug or sleep bonus.

I've been playing in the server 3 days, found moonmetal already, map is 1024x1024, so much action is predicted to happen.

Grinding is minimal, as skill gain is super fast, so you can get your own character customized and ready for pvp in no time.

Each kingdom has already got deed's founded, try to find people in Kingdom chat or Teamspeak

Trailblazer (MR part of the deed Fire and Blood) is one of fairest pvpers i've seen so far. Had pure 1v1, allowed to kill gorillas.
