Graphics Lag after recent model update

There have been many reports of people having a decrease in graphical performance since the new models went live, while others have expressed an increase. Please post the following to help track down the issues:

 

If you are on Windows, the easiest way to get the information needed is by clicking on Start > Accessories > System Information, and clicking on File > Save. You can also just click the Start button and type "System Information" if you are on Windows 7 or higher.

 

If you do not feel comfortable posting the requested information publicly, please make a post with as asked and indicate that you're emailing the information. Then send the options dump and system information to keenan@wurmonline.com. Please include your FORUM account name in the Subject.

 

EDIT: After some testing, it seems that one point of difference is whether or not there are players in local to you. If you've made a post and see this and you can remember, please edit your post to indicate if there were players in your local and how many if you recall. New posts, please try to indicate how many players where in local with you, if any. -- Thanks!

 

Note: If you have just logged in, press F1 to open your console and type: dump options. Right-click the console and "copy entire tab". Then paste it into a paste bin. That will take care of graphic card info and wurm settings. :)

Indicate the problem you have noticed as precisely as possible. Crashing? Memory usage? Travel lag?

Indicate steps that you can take to reproduce the issue, even if it's just "stay logged in for 8 hours"

Indicate the number of clients you are running as well and the memory usage reported in Task Manager

Java Version

Operating System and Version

CPU

System RAM

Graphics Card, Graphics card memory, Current driver version

Current Wurm settings - just the graphics options is fine.

Indicate if you are using a modified shortcut that changes things such as heap space.

Wurm client you are using and the version in the title bar

the textures load a lot faster than before, i can even load 4 clients (maybe more) which i was uncapable of before.

 

travel lag.. i don't know if it is connected to travel or if the client is not unloading deco stuff like trellises,

but it does not seem to matter if i move half the server or stay on deed near some deco - i can hunt in the woods without any issues.

issues start when i move past build up places; half decayed deeds which already lack decorational stuff don't affect me.

 

AMD board, ATI graphic, various graphic settings from lowest to max, pure link, current unstable client 3.99u2

Yeah as much as i liked this graphic update it also dissapointed me, i still experience travel lag at same rate

Just stating that you're also having issues does nothing to help sort out what's causing the issue. At the very least, Graphics card, driver version, Java version and a wurm settings dump in a pastebin. :)

Just an FYI it may just be a coincidence, if it's mostly Australian players reporting lag 8PM last night a major international cable connecting Sydney to Guam crapped itself so all of that extra Asian bound traffic is being pushed over the remaining cables. Some ISP's namely iiNet and TPG are suffering quite heavily. ETA for repair is like a month away due to the fault being 3km under the ocean.

 

Just use a VPN or Telstra/Optus mobile internet until then.

I'm seeing game glitching, similar to early stage travel lag, but it's happening more or less immediately after I log in.  I can reproduce it by staying logged in for about 30 minutes.

I'm running two clients, both maximised, on two separate screens.  Memory usage reported is 1.5GB and 1.3GB for the clients.

Java is 1.8.0_45-b15 64-bit on Windows 7 pro SP1.

Core i7-4770K, running at 3.5GHz, 32GB RAM

Nvidia GTX 770, 4GB RAM, driver v244.48

Terrain+water high, reflections sky, decorations dense, tree/structure/item distance extreme, all animations, animation quality extreme, sky detail medium, cave detail high, shadows simple, render distant terrain+transitions+bloom

Client is 2.99u2 with the standard shortcut

Indicate steps that you can take to reproduce the issue, even if it's just "stay logged in for 8 hours" It doesn't need reproducing because it is constant atm, no matter restarting/relogging

Indicate the number of clients you are running as well and the memory usage reported in Task Manager - 1 client per computer - 4 computers all same issue

Wagon got stuck twice.

First was while crossing a bridge on the 3rd level connecting 2 houses. I have gotten stuck there before on other carts. Boarding would cause me to deboard immediately or once I tried to move. Sometimes I could move a few feet but would teleport back to where I started. After ramming my head against the wall, trying several times, unhitching and pushing several times, walking away and back again, finally it fixed itself.

 

The second time was near the first but on the ground floor. Got stuck while exiting the building. No bridges on the ground floor but it was near a spiral staircase. Same effects; getting stuck, head bashing, teleporting errors, etc. Finally after several tries the game crashed with the crash report from the GPU. Did not take any notes unfortunately. I have been getting this regularly lately. Upon logging back in it was fixed.

I have had to relog a bunch of times today. I noticed now that I check the Task manager that I have 4 processes running - but I only had two clients open at any given time. When I closed down both my clients - these dont go away - and they are taking up about 1160 MB of memory each (which is more than they ran at before the update - I would be at 900-1000 MB memory usage/client.) So despite me closing the game - these java processes do not end.

I felt like it started earlier when I was travelling with the hell horse (so kinda fast travelling?) - but once it got really bad tonight it is as soon as I log on. Will try to reload it now that I have quit the two ghost processes that took up a good 2gb of the memory. They clearly didn't shut down properly, hence memory leak - and me starting the client again meant it added another process as well as the one in the background that I was hoping I had closed.

Started out laggy when on the hell horse cart - choppy lag decreased slightly when getting off and moving at a slower pace - seems fine as long as I am standing in one spot. So possibly movement related?

I experience that travel lag is much worse. It have become worse over some time every new client update. Now it appear that I get travel lag just from stay online long enough and just move around on deed. Just now I travel maybe 200 tiles and lagged out, restarted and already on way home I started to feel travel lag again. Had two other clients running where both just stand on same position.

Previously wurm just lag out but now it also manage to hang the desktop, so I often cant do anything for several minutes.

 

Experienced client freeze even without moving was just typing in chat and didnt experience any lag up to that point.

 

Were at unique killing trying to keep 3 client logged in, seems like every line I type in chats made client use more and more resources until all at 100%. RAM memory usage seems not to be a problem for me (RAM resources below 60% at all time, normally memory run up high where I crash when many in local). One time all clients stop use any resources at all and unresponsive.

Travel lag seems to be worse than before, also running multiple clients is worse, opening 3 clients at once takes CPU usage to 80% and RAM usage to ~95%. Usually only one client is active, the other two are minimized, but using more resources than before (before the update, usage was CPU at 60%, RAM to around 75%).

 

Most of the time I play 2 characters, FPS didn't drop after the update (60 on active client, 30 on minimized one), but game is freezing more often.

 

After a short travel around the area I live on, I have to reboot the PC, or game would become unplayable.

 

Perhaps a secondary effect, game is "freezing" for 20-30 seconds, then mouse is "jumping" to another tab if I was typing something, and (of course) text goes to the wrong chat.

 

 Client version is 3.99u2, stable; using a ramfix shortcut for one client, nothing for the second one.

Yesterday and today the second client closed while riding a cart. No lag or crashes before with both clients at homedeed for hours, problems starting at settled area. Problems (heavy lag, stuttering, closing clients) werent there before update.

Strongbox sucks again - this is what your newbies on Serenity see the first time they enter the game, and even on a high-end machine I get sub-10 FPS and eventually crash

 

this did not happen prior to the gfx patch

Doing anything with any more than 15 people in local is unbearable... it goes from 60fps one second to 1fps, to 60 to 1 to 60 to 1... so frustrating. Did we need to change the models?

Is there more to this log? The JavaPrefs error is a common one and wouldn't cause the crash. 

Could you log in and type "dump options" in console and provide the full console output?

I experience slower grafix performance too, especially near my house at Newspring Island (North West Coast)/Deadwater Port/Wyndolms Mansion. Console log is in spoiler tags. I usually play with 2 clients but never had that bad grafix lag (except travelling lag which is something else).

I've been running single client with major lag, travel lag seems to be much worse, frequent game freezes of 20 seconds or more, crashes without notice or reason, high CPU usage (frequently jumping to 80s and 90s), FPS seeming to be in a constant high 50s.  This is happening regardless if it's 3 people in local or 15+.

 

After relog it does not appear to help, even after full system restarts and only running Wurm and speed fan Wurm becomes near unplayable within a minute.

Problem: Memory leak/travel lag kicking in very quickly since the update. Was averaging at about 15-20 minutes between relogs. Including me, there were about 5-6 people in local the entire time. Memory usage was no higher than normal. Crashes happened when the freezing due to memory leak became too extensive, resulting in white-screen freezes. FPS generally around 18, unless I'm staring at my feet, when it rockets up to 60.

 

Reproduction: Staying online longer than 20 minutes triggers massive degradation of performance.

Client & Memory: One client running. Approximately 1.2g RAM usage reported in task manager.

Java version: 8, update 73 (build 1.8.0_73-b02) Possibly worth noting, memory leak problem has slightly less impact using the most up to date Java than it did using the previous version.

CPU and RAM: Intel Core i7 930 2.8G with 6GB RAM.

Modified shortcut: Using a .bat file with the following: c:\windows\system32\javaws.exe http://www.wurmonline.com/client/wurmclient.jnlp -j-Xms1024m -j-Xmx3072m

Nobody seems to have mentioned it yet, but I'm pretty comfortable stating it is practically all systems for everybody based on local conversation at the Forest Giant slaying yesterday.  Had two toons there and was watching my CPU performance.  All of a sudden it would start to spike up to 80's and 90's, then hit 100% and one client would freeze.  The other one would be unaffected despite standing side by side looking the same way.  This would happen repeatedly to one or the other every 5 minutes or so.  Memory usage was fine--except that each time crashed, the Java process wouldn't shut down correctly so they started to stack, using up memory that way.  Had to close them manually.

 

If devs want to reproduce, just arrange an event to get lots of people together.

Actually nvm, i'll leave the complaining to those who've covered what i was about to edit in here xD Mostly large groups of people together in local just lags like hell....you get the idea.

I started watching my CPU like Gold has, I noticed that wurm is using my 4th core ALOT compared to the other 3... Im not even sure its using them. It was using them all pretty evenly till this update. I have not updated java since.
