AMD Crimson Drivers

Recommended Posts

Is anyone else having a lot of issues with the new Crimson drivers? I am having video driver crashes constantly, even while only on the desktop or other things not graphics intensive. Every game I own will randomly freeze with a spinning windows cursor until the driver finally crashes, recovers, then crashes again.

I am not sure they even offer the old Catalyst drivers in the previous versions as I still have the Crimson settings panel after downgrading the drivers.

Some other gamers have issues (reddit posts on crimson issues  / google reports on games crashing under crimson). Seems to be some general unhappiness. But others LOVE the crimson drivers. So whats the difference? Some reports seem to indicate the crimson drivers use more PSU power somehow and may cause issues if your psu is borderline, but I do not know if that is true.  Another report says this: " The primary issue people experienced with crimson was fans locking at 20. This only affected non reference cards that had been overclocked by AMD Catalyst Overdrive before upgrading to Crimson. "

If you want to get rid of crimson anyway, and if you have not had the drivers very long (say 1-2 days) you could see if a system restore is available to reset the computer to where it was before the crimson drivers were added. This reddit post links to the last Catalyst without crimson but some report still having crimson bits. They recommend a driver uinstaller called DDU and discuss ways to fo a "clean" reinstall, but I think some people there are still reporting issues. They go into more some of things different people have done to get rid totally of Crimson. A few people went so far as to format their hard drives and reinstall windows, yikes.

Sorry, I don't have any personal experience with Crimson so no other advice =/  The people who seem to be happy with Crimson, seem to be VERY happy with Crimson. The ones not happy think it is made by the devil.  Hopefully someone else here in Wurm community has a firsthand solution.  This is just to give you stuff to read while you wait ^_

Thank you, Brash. I was up way past my bedtime (wow, I slept less than 5 hours by the time of my post) and gave up on it last night. I went back to AMD and looked at previous version and Catalyst 15.7 is the oldest back that is still listed. This is the last CCC without full Crimson. It has both the Crimsom and the CCC settings panel (or I didn't uninstall everything and missed a component - likely). I was going to list results in this post but... restart! Can't post while the PC is off.  Using DDU to see if I just missed something.

I reported issues the same day the first release of Crimson came out. With the latest update, it's gotten so that the crashes are frequent and the games don't recover. Desktop apps (as I call non DirextX/OpenGL things) recover fine. Will edit/append when I get back.

EDIT: DDU worked great. I have ample PSU left over. When I used the PSU calculator and plugged everything into the software, I made certain to go a good deal larger than the output recommendations. Also, when I upgraded the CPU/GPU this past autumn as the CPU was really struggling to keep life in its veins, both use less wattage than their predecessors. I have noticed the GPU running hotter but only slightly. The case is well vented so heating on the desktop (unlike my horrid baking oven called a laptop) has never been much of an issue until right before I replaced CPU.

Additional: Safe Mode in Windows 10 is a hoop jump that would make any retired circus poodle nostalgic.
