Height Map Creator Programs

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, welcome to WU, it's (from what I've seen so far) the superior replacement to WO.  Just a little topic thingy...

I'm trying to make a height map out of a map I made on paint.net.   It's exactly what I want for a high-pace pvp map, however, I have no experience in this department.  I googled 'free height map creator programs' and had little luck with the results it popped.  If you can give me advice and recommend a program, or if you can just throw the map together for me, that would be amazing.

This is supposed to be a tri-faction pvp map 2048 (the size of deli).  I've been unable to make a proper looking map on any of the programs i've tried to this point.  my goal is to encourage pvp with heavy rewards and frequent events.  i have designed some pvp events besides hota, and though i will personally participate in open world pvp, i will not participate in events, as i'm a GM and need to be there to facilitate and remain impartial.  this map will feature a hostile pmk that exists solely to provide a no-deed/no-build area that is occupied by said faction with dungeons and the new special world events. i really want this map badly, because many of the problems with pvp that i saw and balancing issues was that too many people got to pick and choose when they pvp'd and how much risk they would take.  hota and specialty events occurring in the designated areas i have here will add less opportunity to bend the advantage to one faction.  this map will include hidden vendors with specialty items, and there is no purchasing of money from our team, all funding for deeds will come from mob bounty, raiding, and trading.  leeching traders will be almost completely useless, and each start deed will contain only one.  still fleshing out many of the details, but our pve server is doing well, so we wanted to make something nice for the wild/epic folks

It's not a replacement ;)

Anyway, google for 'terrain generator' and you'll get better results. I use L3DT myself but the free version only goes up to 2048x2048. There are several others though, I'm just not familiar with them. As for advice, with any program, take some time to understand the basics before you jump in, it will pay off in the end. The rest of it, for me, is mostly trial and error until I get something I like.

Photoshop - its a must have for editing height maps. Easiest is to take your heightmap and pull it into photoshop and edit it, then import it in to ..I think Map Generator 2.6 is the latest and greatest atm and continue to develop your map.

If you want to make heightmaps, just use map generator and take the heightmap into photoshop. Edit, then import back in. Easy enough.

The author of WorldPainter for minecraft has written a Wurm export, it's intent of painting maps is exactly what you are looking for.

Any 16b grayscale paint/photo program can also be used, you just cannot see the result in 3-D.

Another option is Unity which has a 3D terrain editor, export the result to .raw then convert that to .png with one of the 16b paint programs.

Thank you for the advice thus far guys, i have unity and i'm actually attempting it right now, but my graphics design talent is equivalent to a dog doing calculus.  Let's just say 5+ hours has only yielded lots of embarrassment.  I'll keep trying these suggestions though, in hopes that i nail it.  Also, it finally occurred to me that i have no tar or clay on my map....damn it.

If you've saved the actions, load those. Otherwise, save them next time :)

Some terrain programs will generate semi-decent to good terrains for you, like the map generators do but with a few more options for editing afterwards.

okay burt, thanks, i'll start again and save the actions when done, for now i have to sleep, as i'm accidentally scribbling on my map attempts, which look a lot like a blind man trying to paint the 'Last Supper' with finger paints purchased at a garage sale.

The various wurm generators are supporting the greyscale import, so you can bring in a unity map into those.  One of them just added biome painting to compete with World Painter, others are considering adding palette color .png so you can use any paint program for biomes  and all of them will RNG the biomes with more control than WU will RNG the biomes if you do not have them.  But to get your OP result you will need to paint the biomes.

Moved to proper forum. :)

Personally I am working on map generator with workflow similar to World Machine, but designed to generate WU maps.
