What if?

What if most people migrate from WO to WU? Is there any plan B? Like hosting oficial WO-like servers? Working on DLCs?

The development/improvement of the game would certainly be compromised if this happens and I really don't want this to happen. Just hoping for The best.

Honestly, you don't have to worry about that. WO still has a lot that the private servers don't, like, the connected community, especially for new players trying to figure out the game.


 


Even if in the beginning it seems like players are leaving for WU, it will be a good thing, because in the long run, it will draw more players into both than we had before.

Official WO is also the only server that is the strongest guarantee of persistence with minimal GM interference, a record that goes back a decade.  It also has player security that is not in WU servers.


 


While it would seem easy to just make WO the official servers as WU with WO settings, they cannot actually do that because then people will decompile the server code to cheat the security secrets as well as any hidden gameplay secrets yet to be found that was cut from WU code.  There are also gameplay differences like success vs. timer based skilling, that has a big impact on what crafting enchantments you use.


 


It is not the same exact code base, it is just very very similar.  (To the point that someone forgot to scrub Wurm Online text strings that are showing up in WU!).   If anything WU becoming more powerful a market only helps WO code because more people will decompile and mod enhancements and fix bugs.  CC can easily maintain both code bases at the same time, things such as new permissions or 3D caves just like bridges just need security and hidden secrets removed from the code to go into WU.  


 


Now if much of WO moves to WU, that is good for those who remain in WO, since the servers are living worlds they will decay and become reforested giving WO players strange new worlds to explore without having to give up the char and deed.  As long as WU is profitable and does not cause CC to go under, they can keep WO servers alive
