Dark Island (map 4096x4096)

Recommended Posts

Here is a decent (imo) map I've created for myself or anyone else that would like to use it.

Has all the biomes and I've tried to make it as close to WO as possible with the current map editor/api.

version 1.1 - Just wanted to make an update.  If you've been getting an error when trying to tunnel saying it "sounds hollow" or "you're to close to another tunnel." (also, any tunnel/mined tiles creates a drop shaft.) I've regenerated the map files and it appears to be fixed.  I don't know what might have happened but it may have been a bug with the generator version I used. You can download version 1.1 and replace everything but the top_layer.map.  If you've already mined into the stone, may want to keep the map_cave.map as well. (Make sure you backup first!)

Finally, thanks Budda, who made the program allowing me to make this.

mind uploading a picture of the map to something like imgur.com or some other image hosting site? Some of us(such as myself) don't use dropbox or even have an account there to view the image.

Sorry about that, apparently I linked it incorrectly the first time.  It should be fixed in the OP now...  I'll go ahead and add an image to the post though.

Isn't Xanadu 4096x4096? So that would make this map the size of Xanadu. If so, this is an insane amount of land. Don't get me wrong, I think the map is gorgeous but this map could be literally populated by thousands of people and you would still have plenty of space everywhere so you could plant a deed without even seeing a neighbor ever.

Xanadu sized maps are 8192 not 4096.  This is the size of indy server

Then it's a bit better than I thought. Way better in fact. Thanks.

Correct

I think u missed clay to the map if im correct?

Nope, if you look closely there is clay as well.  Should all be near or slightly under water.

I may need to add more, but I wanted it to be kind of rare, like in WO.

Well I wouldn't say it's exactly rare on this map, not like gold vein rare.  It's at least in about every body of water, give or take...  Some people will have to travel to get some depending on where they settle.

I may end up seeding more, it all depends on how it actually feels when I can test it in game.

Edit: The clay color is light grey, so it's almost indistinguishable when under water.  You can see it on the sand though, pretty clear there.

For people, like me, that have a computer working on hamster wheels (and can't afford to feed them appropriately), and can't work with the 4096x4096 version, I made a 2048 version. I just love this map, so I tried to make it look like the bigger version as much as I can.

So here are the settings I used in the map_actions.txt, and of course the same seed as Jerico:

HEIGHTMAP:1445186252614,1,256,8,32,1,8096,true

ERODE:200,35,40
ERODE:200,35,40
ERODE:200,20,40
ERODE:200,20,100
ERODE:200,40,100
DROPDIRT:1445186268084,500,60,45,56,3800

For the sand beaches, I found those usually gives good results similar to the bigger version:
SEEDBIOME(TILE_SAND):12,825,95,15,30,78,36,60,0,580

After that, you can just play around and add other biomes as you wish.

Thanks Jerico for that awesome map.

Here's what it looks like:

If you want the biomes I used for the screenshot, here's the quick settings I made:

From what I've seen messing around with Budda's map generator it can be quickened up quite a bit- most notably the program loops through every tile and drops a single dirt, it does this for however many dirts you wish to drop. If you just have the generator drop all the dirt at once you cut out X many loops- X being however many dirt you were dropping. Also, disabling the fancy dirt sliding can make also make a massive difference... Just an observation I made.

I think what he meant was just a smaller map to run on his 'hamster' server.

My problem is memory I suppose. I can't do actions past the "Drop dirt" section. When I press the "Add Biome" button, it stays pressed while "working" and unpress itself when done. When I work on a 4096x4096 map, it does the same but unpress in a second as if it completed the task but nothing happen. I can't add biomes. And when I save the actions, it doesn't register them.

Thanks Jerico for that awesome map.

If you want, I can make the exact same map again, but smaller...  Which I might be doing for all the sizes anyway just to have and test them.

I've also seeded the map in such a way that you wont find all trees in all parts of the map.  i.e. Some are only in the lower regions and some are only in the higher regions.

Edit: Oh, and thanks btw!  :D

Oh, yeah, I like to do that too. I just randomly filled the map quickly for the screenshot, not as I normally do. But thanks for the suggestion.

And you're welcome!

I forgot to reply to the essential... dumb me! ;)

You can do it if you want but just as a pointer, it's not just a matter of ticking the 2048 in the drop down box. You have to play with all the settings to get it right. It will also always be just an approximation of the original.

Believe me, I spent all day on your map!

I started with your original settings, which I can do with my computer. Put it on 2048 and tweaked everything until the land was extremely similar and then adjusted the dirt layer and the sand for the beaches. For the biomes, it took me 10 minutes of inputting random values (I might even have just copy/pasted some in notepad).

I just read that post from Budda in the map generator thread. So you could just copy/paste the biomes section you used with all the undos and resets and I could use it in the 2048 version to see if the result is the same or at least similar.

Just to let everyone know, I'll be trying this map out tonight and post the map files shortly after.

I'm at work currently so I have neither the map files nor can I test.  Which makes me sad,

loaded the map into WU, did a fly over of it. so far really liking this one. my ancient laptop seems to handle it alright. do need to up the animal pop from 10k though. but doing a massive W.I.P. before we are ready to launch to public regardless of map chosen.
