The Hidden Island's Esoteric Grinding FAQ

Recommended Posts

Disclaimer: There's no point hiding it. This guide is a thinly veiled attempt to get people to understand the purpose of the more unique and out of place enchanted goods that I have for sale. Unfortunately, the less people who know about their value, the less likely they are to buy the items in question - so I'm attempting to correct this issue by teaching everybody in Wurm how to grind like a master, and what types of tools are the best ways to get things done fast. Expect advertisements.

Glossary:

Sweet Spot: The sweet spot is the zone where you get the most amount of 1.01ql to 39.99ql results as possible. Experimentation is often required with differing QL tools. A better example can be found in this Mining Guide.

CoC: Circle of Cunning.

WoA: Wind of Ages.

Alchemy and Natural Substances:

Healing Covers:

Spoiler

Many of you already know to grind making healing covers to get your natural substances up. Yes, walking from tile to tile using Mixed Grass and whatever you can botanize does work - but the currently known best way to grind up Alchemy and Natural Subtances in general is to use Circle of Cunning enchanted Healing Cover ingredients. How is this possible? Many ingredients such as Hearts, Horns, Bladders, Eyes, etc - only use a small amount of weight per healing cover creation, allowing you to get multiple uses of a CoC enchanted ingredient. You can do this by combining this ingredient with more of it's type to increase it's weight.

  1. Highlight the CoC Enchanted Ingredient. (Highlighting the non-enchanted one will result in losing the enchantment.)
  2. Combine this ingredient with more of it's type to increase it's weight. This will let you use the item multiple times. (Or forever if done right.)

From this point, you can then experiment with different potency ingredients, of differing QL's to get a better idea of where your "Sweet Spot" is.

You must have the ingredient with the Circle of Cunning Enchantment highlighted to get it's benefit when mixing. You can then right click the other ingredient to mix.

Every successful creation uses:

0.01kg for Glands

0.01kg for Teeth

0.01kg for Eyes

0.02kg for Bladders

0.10kg for Hooves

0.10kg for Paws

0.10kg for Tails

0.30kg for Horns

0.50kg for Hearts

You can find Circle of Cunning enchanted Alchemy ingredients here. (Look under Natural Substances Goods)

Archery:

Arrow Shafts:

Spoiler

Put a BSB right underneath your Archery Target, and use it to put all of your previously used, and now currently damaged Arrow Shafts into it. The result is that the shafts will only take a minor QL hit, instead of racking up DMG to the point where they will shatter upon hitting the target the next time you use them. You can then take them out and reuse them to your heats content with only a few naturally shattering over a long span of time. This can help you get to 40 Archery without needing to make hundreds of Arrow Shafts, instead I've personally done it with 100 arrow shafts that started at about 11ql.

Carving Knife:

Ship Building Skill: Oars:

Spoiler

Make 100 oars, and put them into a BSB. Bring out a large cart, wagon, or container that can hold 100 oars - and settle it next to that BSB. Bring out the 100 oars into that cart/container, and viola, you now have 100 oars with randomized "Improvement" requirements. You can then sort them by improvement type, highlight and then drag all of the oars that do not require "carving knife" improvement type back into the BSB. Bring them out again. Viola, another batch of randomized improvement types. Keep doing this until  you have about 30+ oars that require carving knife improvements, and use your sexy Circle of Cunning enchanted carving knife to improve them for carving knife skill.

You can find Circle of Cunning enchanted Carving Knives here. (Look under Weaponry Tools)

Fletching Skill: Hunting Arrows:

Spoiler

Make 100 Hunting Arrows, and put them into a BSB. Bring out a large cart, wagon, or container that can hold 100 Hunting Arrows - and settle it next to that BSB. Bring out the 100 Hunting Arrows into that cart/container, and viola, you now have 100 Hunting Arrows with randomized "Improvement" requirements. You can then sort them by improvement type, highlight and then drag all of the Hunting Arrows that do not require "carving knife" improvement type back into the BSB. Bring them out again. Keep doing this until  you have about 30+ Hunting Arrows that require carving knife improvements, and use your sexy Circle of Cunning enchanted carving knife to improve them for carving knife skill.

Coal-making:

Charcoal Piles:

Spoiler

Making Coal Piles is long, arduous and painful work. However, there is actually a way to reduce the strain by getting the maximum gains for the effort. By getting Circle of Cunning enchanted Kindling, you can highlight the kindling and make unfinished coalpiles, giving you the benefits of Circle of Cunning while grinding Coal-making. Kindling can be combined with other Kindling of varying QL's to increase it's weight and/or QL and will retain it's Enchantment when combined properly.

  1. Highlight the CoC Enchanted Ingredient. (Highlighting the non-enchanted one will result in losing the enchantment.)
  2. Combine this ingredient with more of it's type to increase it's weight. This will let you use the item multiple times. (Or forever if done right.)

Every successful creation uses up 1.50kg of Kindling. Every failure causes at least 1 DMG to the kindling.

The key is to continuously combine more kindling with the Enchanted kindling after every failure to prevent the "DMG" from breaking the item over time with failures. Not doing so, can result in shattering.

You don't need to finish the Charcoal Piles once created, you can pretty much just leave them to decay since the only materials you're losing are 1.50kg of the Kindling and a Log. (They decay quickly thankfully.)

Firemaking:

Campfires:

Spoiler

Kindling works great for Coal-making, but it's also a superstar at making Campfires. This means you can grind up that painfully difficult skill of Firemaking with ease! By using a Circle of Cunning enchanted Kindling you can speed up the grinding of Firemaking.

The key is to continuously combine more kindling with the Enchanted kindling after every failure to prevent the "DMG" from breaking the item over time with failures. Not doing so, can result in shattering.

If your goal is to get as much Ash as possible, you could even get Wind of Ages enchanted Kindling to pump out campfires at an exponential rate.

You can find Circle of Cunning and Wind of Ages enchanted Kindling here. (Look under Carpentry Tools)

Unfinished Torches:

Spoiler

You don't actually have to finish the torches to get the firemaking skill from starting them. This means that you can make a large amount of Unfinished Torches and still get the skill you want from their creation. To do so you'd need Tar and Shafts - and guess what? CoC Tar works. Tar can be combined with other Tar of varying QL's to increase it's weight and/or QL and will retain it's Enchantment when combined properly.

  1. Highlight the CoC Enchanted Ingredient. (Highlighting the non-enchanted one will result in losing the enchantment.)
  2. Combine this ingredient with more of it's type to increase it's weight. This will let you use the item multiple times. (Or forever if done right.)

The key is to continuously combine more Tar with the Enchanted Tar whenever it gets low, or heavily damaged.

You can find Circle of Cunning Tar here. (Look under Carpentry Tools)

Hammer:

Ship Building Skill: Oars:

Spoiler

Make 100 oars, and put them into a BSB. Bring out a large cart, wagon, or container that can hold 100 oars - and settle it next to that BSB. Bring out the 100 oars into that cart/container, and viola, you now have 100 oars with randomized "Improvement" requirements. You can then sort them by improvement type, highlight and then drag all of the oars that do not require "mallet" improvement type back into the BSB. Bring them out again. Viola, another batch of randomized improvement types. Keep doing this until  you have about 30+ oars that require mallet improvements, and use your sexy Circle of Cunning enchanted mallet to improve them for Hammer skill.

You can find Circle of Cunning enchanted Mallets here. (Look under Carpentry Tools)

Fletching Skill: Hunting Arrows:

Spoiler

Masonry:

Mortar:

Spoiler

Many of you already know that making Mortar is a pain at the early levels, unfortunately it's a chore that needs to be done if you want to build anything made out of stone. There actually is a way to optimize your skill gain, as well as to increase the speed of this tedious task. How is this possible? Both Circle of Cunning and Wind of Ages work on the clay. This ingredient can be combined  with other clay of varying QL's to increase it's weight and/or QL and will retain their Enchantment when combined properly.

  1. Highlight the CoC Enchanted Ingredient. (Highlighting the non-enchanted one will result in losing the enchantment.)
  2. Combine this ingredient with more of it's type to increase it's weight. This will let you use the item multiple times. (Or forever if done right.)

From this point you can then highlight the Enchanted Clay or Sand, and right click manually to create. The Crafting box also uses the clay's enchantment when creating mortar.

Every successful creation uses up 1.00kg of Clay. Every failure uses 0.20kg of Clay.

You can find Circle of Cunning and Wind of Ages enchanted Clay here. (Look under Miscellaneous Goods)

Woodcutting and Bladed Weaponry:

Using Weaponry to Chop Down Wood:

Spoiler

You can use any medium or large sized Bladed Weaponry to chop down wood, and this is a spectacular way to grind up your Woodcutting, as well as your assorted Weaponry skills. By buying Circle of Cunning enchanted weaponry on low QL weapons, you can get dozens of chops on a single overaged tree, resulting in large gains in your Woodcutting and Weaponry skills. The weapons that this works on include: Long Swords, Two Handed Swords, Large Axes and Huge Axes. You could also use a Shovel, Saw, Sickle, Rake or Scythe! Unfortuantely only an Axe or Saw can chop a felled tree into a log.

You can find Circle of Cunning Weaponry, Saws, Sickles, Rakes and Scythes here. (Look under Weaponry Weapons, Weaponry Tools and Blacksmithing Tools.)

More will be added to this guide soon, but only when they are verified through testing first.
