Returning "old" Wurm Online player has questions!

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I used to play Wurm Online many years back - when PC Gamer first ran their article on the game, and player characters looked almost like clay, and things were very confusing for a new starter. Regardless of the confusion, not knowing where I fit in or what to do - I eventually got really into the game and made myself (half of) a house in the ol' PCG Village. But after a while, I left - moved onto other pastures.

Recently I've been getting emails about Wurm Unlimited and a Steam release seems really interesting and I'd love to get back into it - But I have some questions and things I've noticed.

Firstly, It seems quite a few people on the forums don't particularly like the idea of a Steam release of Wurm - I've seen cries of people calling fowl and asking why they're "Getting news for a different game". Why is this? Surely a Steam release would do this game a world of good? I don't know a lot of people outside of 4 or 8 Chan who know/play Wurm anymore.

Second question; After skim-reading a few posts, there's clearly a lot that has changed since I played - Not just the graphics. Can someone point me to some friendly guide to all the things that exist in Wurm? Is there a wiki that compares new and old and gives a rundown of what's what?

Third: I read the FAQ for WU. Since when did Wurm Online cost money? (Not complaining, I think everyone should be paid for their hard work - and Wurm's been around for a loooong time. But when did Wurm costing money start, and how steep is the price? Are we talking "Triple A" $60, or "Indie" $15?)

I also read a post from "DLGamer" regarding their website's legitimacy and broken-ness. I'd advice anyone wanting to pre-order WU to steer clear of DLGamer. Their reputation almost doesn't exist, their website has definitely not been around for long, they aren't entirely PCIDSS compliant, and they have overall shady sources and business practices. It's my day-job as an information security specialist to look into things like this when people make claims, and whilst DLGamer aren't the worst in the world, they sure as hell aren't looking good.

That's about it for now, Any answers would be lovely.

P.S; If anyone's still around from back in those days, then say hi!

Wurmpedia.com for info on features.

WU costs money but no subscription

WO is free with unlimited trial with a cap on skills and 8 euros a month if you want to become premium. This can be paid with silver coin too if you willing to do slave labor for it.

Ty for the input on dlgames. Yes didnt like the security system in their credit card processing and cancelled

Forgot to explain WU and WO are different games . They share the same development but it will be no possible to transfer , items, money, or characters between each others

1st: i think people are worried it will kill the general mmo.  (I hope to see how they can connect these server worlds.. I am a old returning player also so hoping someone else can elaborate)

2nd

3rd:  Wurm always cost cash for premium membership as far back as I can remember.... A 1 time fee seems reasonable to me for the stand alone version...

Thanks a lot for the answers, Topkos. I'll check out that link.

LumpyGravy, My memory fails me, but I don't remember there being a premium fee in the old days. I might be wrong and just never noticed, though!

It's a steam release of a standalone-private-server Wurm, not a way of playing the actual Wurm Online on steam.

Thats why allot of people are not to hopefull WU will bring lots of new players to WO, biggest argument: Why would new users pay a monthly subscription to girnd longer/slower, if they can just have "unlimited" fun in a one time purchase WU.

About the new stuff, no real timeline consists I think, you could go digging through all the old newspost in the city-hall forum to get a view of what released when. But yeah, allot of bigstuff happend, depending how long ago you played wurm:

  • we have crates,
  • wagons,
  • new shipmodels,
  • sheep, bison,
  • bridges,
  • mulitstory houses,
  • 3 new player gods
  • a new permissions system (stil a bit buggy here and there)
  • rare/supreme/fantastic items
  • a gigantic server called Xanadu (4times the size of independence if I'm not mistaken)
  • respawning uniques
  • new dragons
  • ...

And for the last question in your OP. Wurm online always has costed a monthly subscription fee, it was 50euros/year in the past, now its 80euros/year for 1 character.

You can still play the game free, but all your skills are capped at 20 (which locks you out of things like religion, most ships and most ridable animals/carts).

Ah I see, Thanks for the response!

So, no subscription for premium on Wurm Unlimited? I can understand why people are upset, then..

yup characters are instant premium for the sake of easier coding on rolfs part >.>

as for the store where to get it from i agree with you and the only reason i even considered buying from them with a 20% discount is the fact that reddit gives it an half okay as of 5 months ago

and there is so much new stuff added like compared to the pcg days and now we got like 2000% more bugs 5000% more lag client runs slower(due to all the new fancy stuff) new models more animations better sounds new items new servers oh did i mention bugs and lag?
we have a none existing market for everything but bulk and rare or better

but ya if you wanna come back just buy it on steam at the 10% discount and try it out and hey if you dont like it steam has a refund policy ;) (just get the game start it a few times close it quickly then go into offline mode and play wurm and if you dont like it tell them the game just doesnt work and you want a refund :3)

2000% more bugs and 5000% more lag.

What a bunch of hooey. No more bugs than there have ever been. They fix older ones, add stuff, get new bugs so it stays about the same. Maybe a little fewer. Lag is only noticably bad on Xanadu which is like 4 Indy servers big. And mostly on weekends. I've been playing for 7 years, the game has gotten tremendously better.

You know, In the UK Steam will soon have to allow a 30 day play-time Refund policy, not just the 2 hours play-time, due to the new laws regarding refunding of any kind of product. I'd also warn you about doing that offline trick - They do know about it, and they can in fact still track how many hours you put into the game.. But, that's a long process because usually steam support will quickly read your online activity and go "Yup, that's fine" - But if you have a habit of refunding games after you buy them, they eventually take longer as investigations are made in the background.

About DLGamer: They use a secondary service to handle credit-card transactions, but they do not inform you of this secondary service until half way through the transaction (if at all), they do not advertise that they use this service (Technically making it illegal for them to even handle or process credit card information) and claim they're doing it by themselves. Whilst they may give you the products as a legitimate purchase, they should be taken with a grain of salt when it comes to handling and processing your banking/credit info.

Am I right in saying Wurm has a veeeerry small development team, using something horribly messy to code in, like Java or something? That'd explain probably every bug in the game. ;)  (I do C# coding myself. It's like Java but actually works.)

It's good to see that the game has progressed such a massive way! I was already coloured impressed when I first saw the game, but reading the wiki there seems so much more content has been added. I'm surprised a game of this scale is even alive at this point. Most developers I know would of said this sorta scale would be impossible, especially if it IS done in Java.

Dear Tanksy,

DLgamer exists since 11 years now. First time we've heard about us offcially it was concerning a MMO  : http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/omens-of-war-expansion-pack-for-everquest-available-on-14th-september-2004

Unlike a lots of others merchant, you didn't fill credit-card information on DLgamer, but only through CIC Credit Mutuel Monetico, in fact we doesn't store any payment informations from our users and we can't access them

Payment is hosted by the monetico company which belongs to Desjardins Canadian group banking and the European group Crédit-mutuel which are full PCI DSS compliant. More about Monetico : http://www.monetico.ca/en/about/

However, we're using a "A" class SSL certificat for checkout, you'll find a report in this way at the address : https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=dlgamer.us&latest, same report with steam : https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=store.steampowered.com&s=184.27.37.253

During your checkout experience (In cart), you will find this sentence concerning payment redirection

It is written in Java, but since Java is so easy to decompile it has the WU modding community all excited because even talking about it here for WO gets you banned,

Not only does WO have premium character fees they also have character restrictions with timers preventing you from getting much done or requiring other priests.  Many players subscribe to more than one character as the workaround, especially once new islands are opened and they feared missing out on the land rush but do not want to loose their old server.   Then of course getting lands also is subscription as your stuff decays and gets stolen if you do not.  You can also buy silvers for spending money with real world money - as that is the only way silver enters the game.  Characters and deeds and items are also sold for real world money, as well as gold for euro exchanges.

All of that spending goes away in WU and you can choose who plays on your server with your rules.  So the combination of easier and cheaper to do things have many WO thinking why would anyone come here after playing WU?  The only positive mentioned is WO official servers have been up for a decade and promises they will stay up, and the economy is controlled (like it or not) because of the real world money investment, and Rolf is NOT releasing cheat detection for WU servers,.

There is a steam forum for WU feel free to browse it to see why ex WO want to play WU - for many it was not the game they disliiked, but who played the game with them.   Those who continue to play WO for years are a proven vocal minority - the game has only a 5% retention rate - so if the other 95% buy WU even without bring new players - WU b2p model will outperform the p2w WO model.  It appears Rolf can do basic math which is why WU exists.

vocal minority? most people i see on deli have 4-5 years of wurm under their belt some reaching 7+ and same goes on the other servers granted about 50% leave after 1-2 years

2000% more bugs and 5000% more lag.

i know its actually not that bad well except on the lag part considering there used to be months of no lag spikes no nothing at all years ago which is around the pcg time ;) but ya its not as bad as i make it out to be(yet)

The 5% number comes from Rolf, the approx 5k sustaining population is out of 100k that ever played Wurm.  The vast majority of the players do not stick around.   You never heard about that other 95% because they never spoke up in chat, or in the forum, they just let their starter spot rot and left and you never even noticed that they existed unless it was because you chased them off your deed.
