Posted October 6, 2015 (edited) So I had an idea for yet another way to increase the player base and bring in more revenue to WO. Wurm Unlimited Ultimate. Basically an open source version of WU. P.S. Ah, well if it's probably already decompilable then it makes even more sense to release the source and at least make some money off of it. I'm guessing you'll lose all notes and be fighting additional issues if forced to decompile it...good incentive to buy the source and support the community. Posted October 17, 2015 Yeah, but all the comments explaining why devs write certain piece of code in that way and not the other will be lost. I.e. some routine is written in weird way, but it turns out writing it in the way it seems to "should" be written in introduces subtle bugs that aren't immediately obvious. Now, comment that warns about it before said routine would save any potential modder hours of hairpulling when it turns out that "subtle bug" is in fact server-wide data corruption that happens randomly after server is running for extended period of time. Not an actual situation but it may happen. Of course such release isn't probable (then again, standalone Wurm wasn't probable either) as it would make too easy to remove any copy protection, steam or otherwise and then upload it to some torrent site. Make no mistake, it will happen anyways, but releasing source code would make it incredibly easy for any person with basic Java knowledge to do so. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Open Source will of course bring thousands, no, wait, tens of thousands of programmers willing to buy code and then, you know, compile things just for themselves.
