Cross Bows !

Recommended Posts

Would it be possible to add Crossbows into the game? Bolts for ammo.

I think it would work well with the game mechanics.

How would you want them to differ from bows in terms of mechanics, I would assume a wind action which you must stand still for followed by a shorter shoot action?

Would just add a longer shoot time (slower) but more damage just like a two hander vs a longsword slow but more damage. Would use a bolt case to hold your ammo. Reload and shoot would be a different animation but with the current gamd mechanics it's doable. Maybe even add a required body str with them to promote premium as well. Much like bash body str requirments. It doesnt have to follow the midevil crossbow to the T. Thier could be a light crossbow, or heavy crossbow. Its just an idea the game developers should look into it. For maybe a possible update or add to test server to see how decent it is. But dont make it OP or anything just another option. Is all.

It just makes sence to have crossbows in wurm.

Would probably lead to people having 10 different loaded crossbows in their inventory so they don't have to reload in their next fight...

It has to be done so this isn't possible.

Perhaps make them weigh a fair bit to stop people carrying too many. And maybe only shootable when dismounted. Could be good for sieges maybe!? With the added damage modifier, would make siege shields a necessity during a seige ( not that one couldn't be used prior to crossbows being suggested ofc)

This could be interesting in the game.  I'd want them to be a bit heavier than a two hander, shoot slower than a bow, yet do more damage.  Love the idea

medium bow range, longer shoot timer then all bows (even if skilled) heavy in inventory, do more damage and unable to be shot from horseback. sounds fine to me

The bolts would be all metal and would not use fletching to create; probably blacksmithing. The 'stock' would be wooden, but the 'bow' and components could be metal, so the crossbow could possibly not use carpentry in the way ordinary bows are crafted.

Just a few key points I'd like to note about how a crossbow is different from a bow

- Far easier to use than a bow with little training

- Longer reload times

- Bolts weigh about half the weight of an arrow.

- The range difference depends on how far you go in history, although generally it's safe to say for our time era the crossbow has a lower range.(as well as for balancing purposes)

- Close range is effective, especially at penetrating power.

Anyways, enough rambling :P

Crossbows are perfect for armor penetration. People in plate with shields are impossible to hit with normal bows anyway.

This is simple; a crossbow can only be loaded while it is your equipped weapon, equipping another weapon instantly unloads the crossbow.

The moment you allow people to have even one loaded crossbow in their inventory that isn't equipped is the moment you make it a pvp necessity for all players, to not be fighting with a handicap.

-1 though. Why? There's plenty of weapons already, which aren't well balanced, many of which have no useful role. Rather see existing content re-worked into usefulness instead of just another weapon dumped onto the pile.

Why? This was a legitimate strategy used in medieval warfare.

Could you please reference a single credible historical document or painting showing someone carrying more than one fully drawn crossbow at once? This would be EXTREMELY hazardous.

Just a few key points I'd like to note about how a crossbow is different from a bow

- Far easier to use than a bow with little training

- Longer reload times

- It's reload, get to position, aim, trigger, rather than reload, aim, release. As such it'd take far less time to take your shot once it is loaded.

- Bolts weigh about half the weight of an arrow.

- Penetrating power is greater, but the projectile is smaller. As such it'd certainly be more likely to penetrate someone heavily armoured.

- The range difference depends on how far you go in history, although generally it's safe to say for our time era the crossbow has a lower range.(as well as for balancing purposes)

- Close range is very effective, especially at penetrating power.

A proper bow's procedure is preload, aim, load-release. You release the arrow the instant it is fully drawn. Trying to aim with a fully drawn arrow reduces the power of your shot, and strains the bow. As for crossbow bolts, the ones I have used weigh about the same as an arrow, and are only slightly shorter. The projectile tip can be the same size. Depending on your crossbow, you can even use broad heads, and other designs, though you dramatically trade off your penetration against armoured targets by doing so.

In terms of reload time, efficient medieval and pre-medieval archers could loose 5 arrows in the time a crossbowman could fire a single bolt. British longbowmen, not so much, but Mongoloid cavalry archers, and many other shortbow users could fire a burst of arrows in rapid succession, by holding arrows between their fingers.

The reason that you get more penetrating force on a crossbow is because you have a higher draw strength, providing more kinetic force behind the bolt on release.

Always up for this whenever it comes up, assuming its handled well.

Make the crossbows a bit heavier and bulky as well.

The two main advantages over bows should be being able to shoot one quickly once drawn back and loaded, and the power.

Hrm usually when it comes up, balance is an issue.

Heck for a long time archery wasn't even all that effective till Rolf gave it a boost (turned out to be a bit too much... heh, what a flame war that turned into), later followed by boosting shields a bit in various ways.

Then horses ended up dropping like flies, so barding was added.

Offhand archery has probably met a decent balancing point by now. With a bow you can still ###### someone (even armored in plate or dragon) unshielded in the wide open. On the flipside someone with decent shield skill and fortifications to shelter-in can survive even withering bow fire from multiple archers at wide angles.

So introducing a more powerful long range weapon would have issues.

Not that I'm against having it added and going through the inevitable growing pains.

Can shoot while moving.
