[Chaos guides] Catapulting 101

Recommended Posts

Disclaimer: This is part of a series of guides I'm doing to introduce Chaos to newer players and to people from freedom who wanna venture in the wild lands of Chaos either alone or as part of a kingdom.

Catapulting

Distance calculations

Each tile in wurm is 4 meter in width. On a flat plain, a catapult throwing distance is winch x 4. So if you winch 20, you get 80m distance. When you are trying to hit a place that is higher than you are, you have to winch more than the distance in tiles. When you are trying to hit a place that is lower than you are, you have to winch less than the distance in tiles. A rule of thumb is, for every 45 slope higher than you, you winch one more. For every 45 slope lower than you, you winch 1 less. So if you were trying to hit a longhouse 300 slope over you, you'd have to winch about 7 more. Experiment and figure out.

Success and Failure

Messages in catapulting can be tricky. Not all of them are success messages. Generally to damage any non-house wall you have to land the projectile on a tile that has that wall as a border. That means that when you hit a tile, you can hit all 4 borders of it if they all have non-house walls. House damaging rules are a little bit more complex. To damage a house wall you have to either:

1)Get the trajectory of the projectile to cross-cut through a house wall in 3D space.

2)Provided the projectile trajectory didnt cross-cut through a house wall in 3D space get the projectile to land on a tile that has the wall as a border and be a tile that belongs inside the house and not outside.

Once the projectile lands or hits something you are going to get an event message. Here are some examples and their associated explanation.

No message - If you get no message, it means you are hitting on a tile that has nothing. This is a good way to know you've cleared a tile.

[02:58:37] You seem to have hit Zivirt's stronghold! - This is the most tricky message. The tile you're hitting is clearly inside a house. If that tile though, has no walls at it's borders, you're doing nothing at all. If it has from one to four border walls, you're gonna damage them all. Practically that's impossible as at least one wall might cross-cut the projectile's trajectory and prevent the other walls from getting damaged. To achieve maximum effect here, you have to hit the tile from the side that it has no wall so as to hit the other ( possibly 3 ? ) walls.

[02:30:45] You just missed Zivirt's stronghold. - Same theory applies here. You missed hitting a house that has either walls or nothing.

[01:42:42] You seem to have hit the low stone wall! - What it says, you're doing great.

[01:42:58] You just missed some fences with the ore. - This is correct too. It means you hit the right wall, but due to low skill you missed. Try again.

[03:19:39] You just missed with the ore. - This is correct too. Same explanation as previous but it means it's a house wall not a fence.

Damage output

A projectile can do a maximum of 20 dmg per sucessful shot. The damage though varies. To get the best chance for maximum damage use 80 kg projectiles by combining four shards. 80 kg is the maximum shard you can put in a catapult.

Extra tips

Sometimes the catapults rotation will make it hit the wrong tile as you can hit diagonal too. To align the catapult properly, turn it once clockwise and once counter-clockwise and it will align.

The angle of the tile you are standing, or the angle of the tile you are hitting don't really affect the distance. It's only the height difference that affects it. Sometimes you must change your height a bit to find the right spot.
