Bridge Warnings

Recommended Posts

Random messages appears whenever you stopped/failed in planning a bridge; e.g. "Some terrain is in the way!", "Your end of the bridge is too close to the water level!"... Please post other messages you received and the measures you did to fix it...

22:59:33] looks like bridge would be 1x14 (North-South)

=> oops, not enough skill to build a bridge that long, so had to drop and level a pile of dirt in the middle, which took ages.

[01:31:44] You carefully place the dioptra on its tripod in front of you.
[01:31:48] looks like bridge would be 1x5 (North-South)
[01:31:48] The tile border to your South is level
[01:31:48] You make sure the dioptra is level.
[01:31:53] You point the dioptra at Bagheera.
[01:31:58] You wave at Bagheera.
[01:31:58] You line up the dioptra with Bagheera.
[01:32:03] You look through the dioptra.
[01:32:08] You focus on the range pole.
[01:32:13] You read the graduations on the range pole and work out the height difference.
[01:32:18] The tile border to your helpers North is level
[01:32:18] You check the heights of the plan ends.
[01:32:23] You appear to be 3 dirt higher than Bagheera.
[01:32:23] You work out the orientation and width for the bridge.
[01:32:28] You check for clearance between the bridge ends.
[01:32:34] You check for protruding foliage.
[01:32:38] You check for nearby cave entrances and any lava.
[01:32:43] You check for any items in the way.
[01:32:48] You check that you have permissions to build the bridge.
[01:32:53] You check for any bridges that may interfere with this bridge.
[01:32:59] You check there would be no buildings under this bridge.
[01:33:03] You work out the styles of bridges that would fit.
[01:33:08] You start working out the bridge components required.
[01:33:08] Planned bridge area is 5 tiles long and 1 tile wide.
[01:33:08] (5:abFBA)
[01:33:13] You stop surveying.
[01:33:13] You pack up the dioptra.

So not being level, had to add more dirt to pile .... and yipee:

[01:46:58] Both ends are the same height, Nice!

...

[01:47:38] You work out the styles of bridges that would fit.
[01:47:43] You start working out the bridge components required.
[01:47:43] Planned bridge area is 5 tiles long and 1 tile wide.
[01:47:43] (5:abFBA)
[01:47:47] You stop surveying.

[01:47:47] You pack up the dioptra.

The wooden frame is in place now - but what is needed to build this edifice?

So... I started looking at what materials would be required:

[01:52:03] You see plans for a Stone brick abutment. The Stone brick abutment requires 40 mortar, 62 stone bricks and 16 rock shards to be finished.
[01:52:03] There are four stages and the initial stage requires 40 mortar and 40 stone bricks to be completed.
[01:52:03] QL = 1.0, dam=0.0.

and that is for just 1 section of the 5 section bridge !  Bedtime!

[08:18:40] You check for clearance between the bridge ends.
[08:18:45] Some terrain is in the way!
[08:18:45] You notice that there is not enough clearance for a bridge to be built here.

The tile borders along one side of my planned bridge were at the same height as the tiles at the two ends.

I lowered all the tile borders 8 dirts and got the same warning. I dug them down another 8 and did not get the warning again.

[10:57:54] You cannot work on the bridge part when not standing on the bridge.

[10:58:48] You cannot work on the bridge part when standing on the same tile.

aah - have to build the abutment first.. and get on the right tile.

[10:59:51] You prepare a Stone brick abutment.

 - many bricks, mortar and rock shards later...

[11:29:28] Stone brick abutment completed! - yay!  1st of 5 done

[11:31:10] You prepare a Stone brick bracing.

 - many bricks, mortar and rock shards later...

[11:44:02] Stone brick bracing completed!  - yay! 2nd of 5 done

reverse cart, with mats in crates, to the next section...

[11:46:09] You prepare a Stone brick floating.

- not so many bricks, mortar and shards for this

[11:53:36] Stone brick floating completed! - yay! 3rd of 5 done

reverse cart, with mats in crates, to the next section...

[11:54:59] You prepare a Stone brick bracing.

- oops...not going to have enough bricks for last section...

get trusty sidekick, Bagheera, to come and make some and bring me a meal. ;)

[12:16:24] Stone brick bracing completed! - yay 4th of 5 done !

reverse cart ('Come on Baggy Boots,  work faster on those bricks!')

[12:17:25] You prepare a Stone brick abutment.

[12:25:17] Main stage completed! but need 22 more bricks...

('What dp you mean you are encumbered and need water!?' cracks whip!)

[12:28:53] Filler stage completed!

('Well done, Bags, you can go now')

[12:36:35] Walls stage completed!

[12:36:35] Stone brick abutment completed! yay ! and 5th of 5 done !

And so the first hump of the Jungle Book's Stone Arched bridge/s is done:

and yes, a boat will pass under (well actually through) that low bridge - at least a sailing boat will.

And now for the second hump:

However, the 2 humps are going to be uneven, coz i did not check the skill levels required carefully enough (with 61 masonry skill i could have built 2 x 7 tile long bridges) and also did not place the middle upraised tile in the right place, but nvm!

[14:57:02] Planned bridge area is 7 tiles long and 1 tile wide.

[14:56:18] Both ends are the same height, Nice!

When surveying a 37 tile bridge with 78ql dioptra and 82ql range stick:

[03:20:57] The quality of the dioptra makes it too hard to work out the distance.

When planning said bridge:

[03:23:17] You can't read the graduations on the range pole at this distance.

(edit: had enough skill - 98.6 carpentry)

As far as one can tell, both the dioptra and the range pole need to meet the QL requirement for any given length.

37 x 2.5 = 92.5

When I posted that, I wasn't aware of exactly what the QL requirements were, I just figured we were collating warning messages.
