Does she have a laptop using both Intel integrated and a dedicated Radeon or Nvidia?  Something like this could happen if an automatic update (java or videodriver)  lost the link telling it to use the dedicated gaming card and it is now using the low powered Intel chipset.

Another possibility would be if she has antivirus program running a scan in the background while she launches the game.

Try restarting the computer and see if it still happens.

Do not run any other programs except Wurm -- no browsers. chat programs etc etc)

Obviously we need more information from her. A start would be her most recent console.log file from which we can tell her videocard and what settings she is running with.

Also is she on a laptop and is the laptop running unusually hot?

If you post a console.log we can help more easily then just "help my game runs slow" which gives us very little information to work with.

Check any graphic card driver's last install dates. If the last update date coincides with the current issue, you could attempt to revert to the previous driver.

Could attempt switching to low graphic settings before logging in and/or deleting the graphics.jar file (in the Wurm Online Packs folder) and redownload by relaunching the game.

Unfortunately, the amount of help we can give, is directly tied to the amount of help you can give US in regards to actual info of the system in question.

1.) What does she have? Laptop, Desktop, or (other). If other, describe in detail.

2.) What Operating system is she running? If you don't know, Go to the start button, and in the search area, type command.com

Then type dxdiag

It may take a moment to come up. Then look under the system tab where it says Operating System. Report what it says there to us. System Model would help too.

Next under the Display tab, Name, manufacturer, chip type, approx total memory, and display mode.

That'll be a START, and we can go from there.

Does she have a character name that she uses ONLY for Wurm? This may not work on Windows 8 (win8 confuses me :P) but it should work on Win7 WinXP etc

If you go to START>SEARCH and type in a unique Wurm character name, it will usually find the Wurm character file plus that character's "console log"

You often have to wait several minutes for the search to complete as it is slow on a large harddrive/older computer.

For instance, if I go to START>SEARCH and type a search for my Wurm character  NEOME, I get a wurm folder named NEOME but also a file named console.Neome.log. She probably has file extensions turned off by default so it might instead say "console.PinkButterfly" (or whatever her character name).

If you doubleclick console.characternamewhatever, it should either open in Notepad or ask which program (Windows Notepad should be an option though you might need to Browse through "windows program" choices.)

If she got this far \o/  Go to the top of Notepad and click EDIT: SELECT ALL then EDIT: COPY. Then you need to come here (or she can emil it to you) and click EDIT:PASTE

Micrsoft's Internet Explorer Browser has a problem pasting to the forums but IF YOU GET THAT FAR, we will walk though that too :D

(sorry I do not know how Win8 works if she has that)

PS: DXDIAG helps, among other things we now know it is a older desktop, weak CPU,  64-bit Win7, and a super weak integrated NVidia chipset (6150SE nForce 430   ), which is likely a chip soldered into the motherboard and not an actual dedicated graphics card. It iis likely using outdated HP drivers because anytime you tell it to check for Updated drivers, it tells you everything is all up to date (it lies, sorry)

This means you need all setting SUPER LOW.

I would still love to see console log, which gives a look at your game settings, if you can follow my post right before this. Its not very muuch harder to do than the DXDIAG part.

You did brilliantly getting DXDIAG.TXT so Good Job \o/

You have masyered 50 % of the harder parts (finding dxdiag and pasting the text here) so wurm's character  console log is not a lot harder

Great, while I look this over, lets have you update video drivers because yours are over six years old. Do NOT believe windows/HP if it says those 2009 drivers are "completely up to date"

Ok here are better drivers for your Nvidia 6150SE/Win7 64-bit:

http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/82758/en-us

Sometimes HP does not allow you to install anyone's driver but theirs, however theirs are six years old. Try this then we can poke around HP site if it refuses to install.

*** PLEASE NOTE you probably have a NUMBER of issues including old drivers, fragmented files on hard drive, excessive bloatware etc so this is only a FIRST STEP and not a full solution.

You will probably get bored with this before me ^_^ but lets see how far we can get one issue at a time.

So next step is -- better drivers and lets see your console.log to see what settings you use.

Brash seems to have the IT tech support well in hand, so I'm going to sign off for the time being. (Way past my bedtime.) I'll check into this thread when I wake up and see if there are still issues going on, but it looks like you are in good hands. :)

Settings look ok to me.  :) you have most of the big performance hogs turned off already.

I am going to guess based on the computer that other programs also recently run slower than they used to?

Or is it only Wurm?

Or is it only Wurm?

Its all my games... and i can only be certain games. I can run Terraria, Unturned, The binding of Isaac and Don't Starve but i have there graphics all the way down and i lag alot on them. If lucky i get 10fps.

I think there are a number of factors causing your computer to run Wurm slow. Some is just really old hardware but likely you cannot change that part.

Since it ran tolerable before, let's work on getting back to "tolerable".    Since it affects MOST games, then it won't be a WURM solution but a "fix my clogged up computer" solution.

1) One option is to see whether you can do a SYSTEM RESTORE on your computer to revert it to where it was a month or two ago (if it ran MUCH MUCH better back then). You will have to reinstall any new programs added in that time (games etc) but it should not lose things like chat texts, photos. emails, documents.

2) I  would also go to CONTROL PANEL> PROGRAMS. sort by INSTALL DATE and uninstall anything from the last 6 months that you do not recognize (actually probably go through the entire list but its likely a very long list).

3) Best solution but up to you --  is a "burn it all down and start fresh" solution, of formatting the hard drive (erase EVERYTHING and that means EVERYTHING) then reinstall a fresh copy of windows and avoid letting it install any bloatware. THIS IS SEMI COMPLICATEED and you should give it a lot of thought and possibly ask for a geeky friend's help. Invite them over for pizza. You WILL lose most data on the computer, its like going back in time to the very first day you got it. But heck it worked better then, didn't it?

A less drastic series of steps (this does not work quite as well):

1) First, update to those 2015 video drivers I linked, as your 2009 drivers are too old.

2) Run your computer using a CLEAN BOOT. I do this on my Win7 computer and have done this for like 10 years now. It runs ONLY in clean boot.   Any time my four teenagers complain their computers are running slow, I find all kinds of horrible bloatware launching into the system at startup, and a clean boot turns a lot of this  off. In 99 percent of cases, you do not need that extra software running UNTIL you launch a program that needs it, and those will launch with the program. Having it all preload when windows starts means it all runs horrible. But be sure you read the link first and understand how to reenable stuff it it kncks out your wireless internet (shouldn't run wireless internet anyway, it has worse performance)

3)  Get rid of the excess windows "glitter" graphics. Do this by running on PERFOMANCE MODE. The desktop won't look as pretty but the games run better. See this page on General Windows 7 Performance Tweaks and especially note turning OFF Aero and all visiual effects On mine I have every box unticked and instead tick "Adjust for BEST PERFORMANCE."

4) Run these programs to look for unwanted bloatware: Malwarebytes  AdwCleaner  (there are some other good ones I need to look up.) Beware a lot of "free" software that offers to find viruses as some of them actually install malware, but these two are good.

5) Disk defragmenter -- probably not a huge issue but It Needs To Be Done pretty regular. If it has been a very long time, it may take MANY MANY HOURS so run it while you are asleep and/pr at work the first time, after that once a month or so.

I need to look around some more as I forget some  of the things now. I think I have another forum post on some of this and will try to find and link that post.

For now you can go through these and pick and choose which ones you feel most comfortable doing.

THIS CHECKLIST IS FOR OLDER USED COMPUTERS THAT OTHERWISE "GOOD" -- ie they ran these same games fine in the past but no longer run well at anything.

PSS:  warning, geeky HARDWARE stuff, for a severly  limited budget ($25-$100)

If you can afford about $100 on a new "used" computer you can occasionally find really good bargains if you shop very careful. You may not have this option, I am just adding it "in case" it is something in your budget range.

This used computer is currently at $52 bid and if you can get it under 70-90 bucks, it is not a bad deal at all.  It is not new, it is not "powerful, but its like, a lot better than your Sempron setup with the integrated nvidia.

Because it is a dualcore not a quadcore, it will not run newer games like the new Dragon Age or the newest Witcher.

That computer is cheap and decent EXCEPT it needs a better videocard too. You have to be careful because some videocards need a LOT of power, and cheap computers normally have cheap power supplies.

Also EBay has some scams on videocards (countfier cards that are reflashed and not what they claim)

But this is the exact same card I am using on my own older computer, there are others bidding but anything under $50 would be a great bargain.

If you got both of these items, you would end up with a slightly better computer than I have, and I run up to three Wurm clients ok at a time on reduced settings.

You have to be super careful on EBay because there are some scams etc but those two I linked are both purchases I would suggest to a friend or relative.

Again it is possible this is not an option but figured I would mention it "in case" ity is within a very limited budget.

Another option is this quadcore system with NO harddrive or operating system but a geeky friend may be able to use your old hard drive (wiped/formatted). Assumes you have access to Windows (disks from an old system etc). Still needs a low-power videocard (350W PSU) but that GTX650 might work in this one. It might run BRAND NEW games ok on lower settings.  Looks a little better than y own system :P

---------- more ranbles

You can also look into a CHEAP (under$50) upgrade to your current system but that is actually trickier and the resilts not as good. But it is cheaper.

You can even use this card in your current  HP system, as long as it is a normal sized tower and not a super slim model, because it uses VERY little power.

HP normallhas terrible 300W PSUs so most addon cards won;t run on them becayse the HP lacks a PCIE powercable but this card uses very little power.

Actually your current cheap 250W power supply probably lacks the PCI-E power connecter needed by the GTX650. The Dells normally ship with better PSUs, than HP systems.

Here instead are two supercheap cards UNDER $20 that should work fine in your current computer:

cheap1 cheap2

You still have two remaining issues : bloatware (can fix free if you stay stubborn) and a super slow single core weak Sempron CPU. It also would be nice to upgrade to 4 giges of ram but that is less urgent than the CPU/GPU.

Good news is thats an AMD AM2 board and its quite possible there is a cheap used dualcore CPU or even a quadcore you can upgrade to, but I would have to research more to see what options you have (I would expect it is POSSIBLE to find something around $25 for dualcore and $45 for used quadcore.. Howver, a videocard upgrade is "super easy" and a cpu upgrade is harder, you may again want to invite over a geeky friend for a CPU upgrade)

if you buy on ebay also must watch out for "bargains" where the shipping & handling is more than the hardware, I usually try to find "free shipping" bargains.

----

More, if you think about upgrading the curerent computer

: Here is the official HP spec page for your computer

processor upgrade options (you have more options tha I expected)

  • TDP: 95W

  • Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:  NOTE: Only socket AM2+ processors are supported with this motherboard.

    • AMD Phenom II Quad-Core

    • AMD Phenom II Triple-Core

    • AMD Phenom Quad-Core (A) 9xxx series (AM2+)

    • AMD Phenom Triple-Core (T) 8xxx series (AM2+)

    • AMD Athlon X4

    • AMD Athlon X3

    • AMD Athlon X2 ( B) (AM2+)

might be possible to find a cheap quadcore.

$12 cpu + $15 videocard (bioth with free shipping) = mongo cheap upgrade!

It is still a cheap computer but it is a better cheap computer ^_^ You would still need super low settings but it should be "playable"

But you still need to find A GEEKY FRIEND to help because the cpu part is tricky.

RAM & VIDEOCARD  you can probably do yourself with a little coaching and some anti-anxiety breathing techniques :)
