All compasses 70 ql and above will work for at least 14 tiles and reappear instantly when you stop (barring lag).  The lesser one will still work for at least 10 tiles, and also reappear instantly when you stop.

 

NOTE:  Remember to drop your old compass, walk around, then pick up your new compass so it works correctly.

Thanks for the quick reply, sounds like the 1 hour delay for sending items to other servers is no longer true if you got it so fast.  Good thing to know in the future.
