buying new desktop or laptop.

Recommended Posts

I want to buy a desktop or laptop just to play wurm.

What do you think I should buy.

Lets say I can spend 1000$ USD.

What do I buy.

I will buy used if built by one of the Wurm players here.

as long as others tell me its a good deal.

Or I will buy new if its what is needed.

I want to run Wurm with as few glitches as possible.

I don't have to have distance view all the way up and don't have to have the best graphics.

but would be cool to have everything at top notch.

My laptop, advertised as a gaming laptop, runs hotter than hell. My desktop, with a slightly less powerful processor, runs cooler than James Dean.

Just some info from my perspective to help you choose your type.

most laptops with a halfway decent cpu/gpu will run quite hot after an hour or so of gaming

not all, but most

I would go with a desktop, no battery limit, and still can have good power for games!

This "openbox" ASUS gaming system from NewEgg might be good if you prefer one someone else has assembled:

$899.99 ASUS CG8270 Desktop PC with Intel Core i7-3770 3.40Ghz Quad Core CPU, 16GB DDR3 RAM, 3TB HDD, RADEON HD 7770 GPU

Only has 30-day moneyback refund, no three-year warranty type deal if that is important to you.

Looks like the same thing for $100 less if you go through this amazon reseller. (w limited 90 day warranty through asus?)

the only thing i don't like about prebuilts, besides the the premium(though it can be convenient the get it all together) is often times, they don't list what PSU/Motherboard/RAM brand they use

A Quality PSU is honestly the most important part, you get a crap one that shorts out or something, your looking at the possibility of a dead motherboard/cpu/ram/gpu

And really, its very easy to put some part together for a rig, if you've played with legos, you can do it, just gotta be a bit more careful and watch out for any kinda static buildup, but thats easy to fix, jsut touch something metal, and don't stand on carpet

I built a similar build to the one I just put together below myself, and it can run like 12+ Wurm clients, or any game I've thrown at it at highest settings @ 1080P w/ 60+ FPS (including ARMA 3, Total War Rome II, etc).

Don't cheap out on parts unless you're not looking at spending towards the top of your price range. If you need to save a bit of money, scrap the case and buy a cheaper one, as well as a non-modular PSU. It should save you ~$150 or so.

Good luck, and if you need any help (or want me to build it for you and ship it), feel free to message me! :)

no, they came with a update. not a fix.

yea

a firmware update

...

which fixed it

cause it was a software problem, not a hardware

specifically, and basically the drive was having a hard time fetching old information, its not like the NAND flash mem was wearing down, nor was the controller breaking

http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/samsung-releases-ssd-840-evo-firmware-update-solves-slow-reads-issue.html

Also, i would not suggest getting this motherboard, its know to have VRM problems, they tend to get very hot on most boards

i would recommend a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128514R if you decide to go with this build, its a fair bit more expensive, but it has a 8+1 power phase design, witch i highly recommend on above 4 core processors, especially AMD ones, as they tend to use a fair amount more wattage than a Intel CPU, and the last thing you want is to have is your CPU throttling cause it isn't getting enough power, or the VRMs are getting to hot

$30 more isn't much when it comes to the motherboard, especially because it has 2 PCIe slots for future expansion, and 2 more USB ports. So I'd say grab that one instead yeah. :)

WOW You are awesome thanks for the information.

I am going to build my own now.

Did not think I would get such a good reply. I hope that many people get to read this thread and enjoy the art of the build.

Hey, can I recommend something better if you haven't started building yet?

The previous listed PC's really have horrible performance/price ratio IMO.

You don't need an SSD and you don't seem like someone who would want to go crazy with overclocking, so an expensive mother board and a "K" cpu is really overkill.

How about this?

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/jbvRRB

This should be able to run (almost) every single game out there on the highest settings. The gtx 970 is a really high end GPU. If you don't want to go that far, you can replace it with something cheaper that will also work good, like a GTX 760 or a GTX 770 (though I recommend to keep the 970).

The earlier listed FX 6300 cpu is a low end budget cpu (with the standard AMD enormous amounts of power consumption..) and wurm is quite cpu dependent, so definitely don't go for that one if you can afford a better one. The gtx 750 ti is the same story as the 6300, a cheap low end budget card which won't do much good.

Also, I generally try to stay away from AMD components. My PC originally was full AMD. I quickly replaced the CPU because it was flat out horrible, and I plan on replacing my R9 270x because it has a lot of glitches and blue screens crashes like half the time I enter/leave a fullscreen application.

And last thing: Higher amd R9 series cards are really pricey right now, not because they're good but because of the bitcoin miners who like them.

It's really personal preference when it comes down to AMD vs Inte/Nvidia. I've had both, originally starting with ATI way back when. I upgraded to a 560TI simply because Wurm's ATI/AMD support was lacking at the time.

Now I have a 290 and I couldn't be happier. The drivers have much better support now, and personally I think that the price you pay for the performance you receive is still better than getting an upper end 900 series Nvidia card. There's no "decently" optimized game that I can't run at high/ultra settings without getting 60+ FPS with the card.

I have an FX 6300 in one of the computers in my house, and it runs wonderfully. It can run ~8 Wurm clients without issue w/ 8GB of RAM bundled with it. It doesn't overheat on the stock CPU either. The price for performance ratio compared to the i5 4670 is drastic. I don't see the need to spend an extra $100-120 on such minor improvements.

I agree with the SSDs though. You could easily save over $100 just by buying a regular HDD instead.

i will never use a computer without an ssd after getting one, every program on it opens up pretty much instantly, and the boot up time is ~7 seconds

he says he wants the computer for purely wurm, so getting a 970 is literally useless, it will give such a little performance boost over the 750 ti that its not worth the money, same story with the 290 tbh

the 4690k is 10$ more than a 4670 absolutely no reason to get the 4670, at all, there is no benefit over the 4690k as even if you don't OC, it still has a higher base clock and a higher turbo clock, and is a Devil Canyon , rather than norm Haswell, so will run cooler

I do agree about the i5 vs 6300 however, if you have a budget of above 600$ i'd always go for the i5 over the 6300/8320, outside of very specific cases where the more cores give more performance than the much strong single core performance

To get the most wurm performance you want the best CPU you can get, being as a 4670 is is a measly 10usd less than a 4690k i have no idea why you would ever recommend it, ever, its not even a devils cannon 4690, its old haswell, like...what?, at least recommend a 4690 non-k

except the non-k 4690 is more expensive 4690k l0l

tldr, get a 4690k

the thing is though, he said he wants the rig purley for wurm, you're going to spend like...200 more dollars for very little more preformance, if it was a general gaming machine, of course i'd through a 970 in it, but for just wurm? nah

Looking at the 970 myself, any idea if it works well with wurm, currently I've graphic issues due to AMD onboard graphics (twitchy cursor, flickering terrain etc) wanting to know if the 970 will be without these issues

970 is good for wurm. but currently got a memory issue when using over ~3.3gb. but aslong as you're not using any extreme memory it's fine.

Personally i am not gona surrender my 2x780Ti's yet, will most likely wait for AMD's new serie as i reckon they will be good and affordable

Gone420: just google samsung evo you will see that nothing changed with their supposed "fix"
