System (Windows Vista Ultimate SP2) I have an ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series GPU,I am unsure of where/what drivers I should be using, I've tried multiple but none seem to work completely properly..The card itself is a Gigabyte GV-R487D5-1GD,Radeon HD 4870 GPU, 1 GB GDDR5 I'm currently using an ATI driver from 2009 with no more updates available.. The card is pretty old.. The above crash log is from trying to login to wurm, being presented with the crash log, and as soon as the greyed out button activates, I get a java not responding error.. Any help or advice is appreciated ^ ^! Edited January 2, 2015 by Reiless
Posted January 2, 2015 (edited) Hello, I dont really have any direct help for you, but Ill add some info anyway, if only to give the thread some attention and not make you feel all alone. I had this on one of my old pcs too. It is related to your graphics card and its relation to OpenGL I think. I had a Sapphire Radeon HD ... something something. I did not manage to fix it myself and ended up using a different graphics card in it, which was a similarly ancient nvidia gt 8600 which did work. WUrm started instantly without any change after I swapped these two. I couldnt update my drivers anymore either I know it is in the drivers though, as every google search on this error tells me. I hope one of the smart ones can jump in on this. Edit: The only thing I can think of is that you have the default windows drivers installed. If you install the latest version from the official website it might help. (I did try this at my home back then with no avail, but others do seem to have some luck with it) Good luck! Posted January 2, 2015 This error "Could not create window with selected width and height. The error was: <Pixel format not accelerated>" usually means you're using graphics drivers that don't support OpenGL have a look at these threads to see some advice http://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/104346-pixel-format/http://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/111076-crash-on-startup/?hl=+ People with older graphics cards than you have been able to get Wurm working, I hope you can too. Posted January 2, 2015 (edited) Wurm worked perfectly fine for me with this video card for years, never once a problem. I've had the same drivers for a while as well, I think it may be related to a recent update, but I'm not too sure.. I've tried disabling Catalyst AI and changing OpenGL settings in ATI Catalyst, no use.. Perhaps I should try reinstalling my driver? Edit: Or it could have been the recent updating of drivers I have done.. Could it be my compatability settings for Wurm? Or should I try and tweak around with some settings until something works? Any suggestions on where I could start? Edited January 2, 2015 by Reiless
Posted January 3, 2015 (edited) Pixel Format Not Supported always means a videocard driver is the problem. I remember at some stage with my older Radeon, they stopped official driver support and moved drivers over to a catchall "Legacy Drivers" for all non supported hardware. If so, there is a chance that to be compatible with ALL older radeons, they might have lowered the OpenGL (though I would expect instead that the driver could be a higher one and hardware that does not support that high, would just drop down to the best it could support.) edit: I rechecked AMD site and they DID drop support of this card from active driver support but they did NOT move it in with very very old cards, instead it is clumped together Radeon HD 2000 3000 4000 series. That's probably lucky as Radeon HD 2000 supports OpenGL 3.3, plenty of wiggle room there. . Check under Control Panel>System>Device Manager>Graphics Adapter>Properties>driverConfirm the driver author is AMD/ATI (Microsoft or your own computer maker may make a generic one with a more recent date but it won't support OpenG games as well: -- they just redate VERY OLD (but stable) drivers with some one file change if it helps home/pfficce apps, or just to assure people their drivers are "fine". They might have decided to "update" your drivers with an older re-dated pack) Check under driver date: The most recent official AMD driver is dated 10/15/2013. If your driver has ANY different date, try using this link instead for 32-bit Vista Radeon HD 4000 (Legacy)http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/legacy?product=legacy2&os=Windows%20Vista%20-%2032Then look for a way to turn off automated updates for video drivers as this "legacy" driver is probably the last "good" driver you will ever get, anything with a newdate will be a repackaged mishmash from Microsoft or computer maker. Radeon 4870 is still a pretty beefy card so I would keep it as long as you can. If you look here, it still rates pretty decent for games:http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.htmlIf you decide to upgrade anyway (since it is a nice system overall), look for something at least 2-3 tiers above the 4870. Anything less is a very shortterm stopgap.(Ignore the 4870X2s, as those are dual cards. A single card is nearly always a better investment is you are on any sort if budget.)
