Very little magic though there is some (mostly through priests who are good at PvP but very limited at crafting. I suggest not even consider a priest till after your first 90 days or so, so you'll know what you'll be missing if you convert them to priesthood).

For PvP, you have several options: Chaos, Epic, and Challenge, so read up on all three (or someone here can do an unbiased comparison). For PvE, there is the Freedom cluster which has around six servers (you can cross by boat between them, and with Chaos pvp area.)  Each server has a slightly different personality so knowing more how you like to play, will help people advise where to start. Since you can have several character on one email, I would even suggest starting several new characters, on different server types, and see after a week which one you are enjoying the most. Taking an extra week or two to start in the right server, will pay off in the long run.

Hiya, Wurm is fantastic and we hope you stick around a while.

The longer you give yourself to sink into it, the more you'll realise how good it is.

+1 for Recommending Factional Fight. If you watch their videos (or just listen to them) while playing, you will develop a good understanding of the game fairly quickly.

The main thing I would suggest is trying to find a village to join. Some people enjoy the challenge of going it alone, but it is exactly that. A challenge. If you join up with people you wont have so much to worry about right away and can take your time. Plus, you'll meet some great people too.
