The Strength of a Troll

Today on Deliverance I fought a venerable greenish troll for almost one hour (log below).  I was not intentionally trying to extend the fight.  I was fighting to win and win quickly.  But something has happened to the strength of trolls that it would take me nigh an hour to kill one.  I had to back away many times to heal and repair my armor and weapon.   I had excellent chain armor all with high aosp.  I had a LS with LT, MS, and NIM.  I also have 70+ fighting, 70+ longsword, and 40+ body strength.  I was also mounted, originally on a wagon where he ambushed me, but then on a horse.

 

I said all of that to say that I REALLY APPRECIATE the fact that this troll gave me a good workout.  It was a great PVE experience and I hope that future tweaks to the strength of animals will be made.  For example, I would love to have a long fight with a bear that is strong enough to live up to its real-life reputation.

Eyes, what is your shield skill?  I prefer to archer them because of the insane shield damage... well, I did when archery actually worked. I guess is might still kinda work if you wear studded.

Greenish mobs are very close in strength to champion mobs.

Using the wrong gear for that kind of mob anyways, trolls are armoured so a longsword is nowhere near as effective as a maul. Chain doesn't help either.

Using the wrong gear for that kind of mob anyways, trolls are armoured so a longsword is nowhere near as effective as a maul. Chain doesn't help either.

He never said anything about damage, just a general statement of creature type vs weapon type, which is well documented.

 

I've never had a problem like that though, even just switching over to my combat sickle I'd be pretty surprised if I had a fight that took that long, pretty crazy.

I'm not sure about now after recent updates, but piercing always used to be great against trolls, hence why people who didn't abuse alts used them as pin cushions for easy archery skill. By that logic, swords should be very good against trolls (and they are - high LT longsword with a shield are highly effective against trolls and pretty much any non-unique non-drake/eagle/nogump assuming you have the skills to use them). If studded had higher damage reduction, it would theoretically be great against trolls because the glance rate against mauling is so high.

I didn't use a shield, I held an LT maul in my left hand which I always have with me.  I thought about switching to the maul but my skill is low.  I did switch mid-way from chain to plate, but the plate did not seem to protect me better than the chain so I switched back.  I also switched from the wagon (he surprised me enroute) to a horse and most of the fight was on the horse.

 

I wasn't hunting today, just doing work around the deed when he came up behind the wagon.  But regardless, it was a great fight and I enjoyed it very much.

Weapon skill doesn't do much aside from parry rate because hit/miss is affected by CR. Dual wielding sucks. There's really no situation I can think of where dual wielding would be a good option. One hand and shield or a two hander would be better for pretty much all scenarios. I'd prefer 1h + shield because of the defensive ability, but two handed might be better if your shield skill sucks. I still would rather use archery over anything against trolls because they destroy shields (10+ damage from a single fight) if the plate nerf didn't suck so much.

 

To put things in perspective: using an 80/80/80 character on Epic with an LT longsword, I can kill a troll in about a minute and end at full health without backing off. That may sound impressive to some, but it's really nothing special by PvP server standards. Fight skill isn't curved for PvE, while shield/weapon are effectively mid-high 90s, but you can achieve the same results with lower (80s should do). Keep in mind that body stats actually mean something on Freedom.

Trolls are also quite hard to 1v1 while still doing enough damage, especially with the greenish strength. Best fought in groups with aggressive flanking

Its more that he goes "Thanks Rolf for buffing Trolls, please buff other mobs like this", when nothing has occurred, he is just handicapping himself.

When I first came to wurm like 4 years ago, I wanted to duel wield. Then I was told that it's horrible and was nerfed into the ground. So I never looked back at that. I've typically always used longsword and large metal shield, but really been thinking of going large axe and large metal. LT has been annoying me also, while yes it's nice to heal. but it just doesn't hit as hard as frostbrand. Trolls are pretty tough though, every once in awhile I even have to back up for a min to heal a couple mediums through 80ql plate. It being greenish is what really gets you. that and chain is pretty weak imo.

 

just seems like a waste of time fighting anything for that long for basically nothing of value.
