So I downloaded Wurm lately (again, after half a year break) and I tried to run it. I've been given this error:

Experience said to disable GLSL and Shaders. Did it, the error just kept occuring. I began to search for an answer here and after a couple of minutes I tried to turn the client on to lower some more settings.

EDIT: I managed to overcome the latter error by reinstalling Java. The first one, however, remains.

One of the problems is your onboard intel graphics adapter:

can we see also the full console.log file from your Wurm folder, there may be some additional settings and information there that would help. 

 

edit: oops a newer laptop, I found your old thread from last spring when you had the same issue  You put there it is a a windows 7 64 bit acer laptop. (ignore anyplace below I suggest it is an older dekktop. the odd amount of physical memory threw me off).

 

Also back then you mention at the very end of the thread updating also the NVidia driver, so you may be back again to the old problem of the nvidia chip not recognizing the game and using the lowpower intel chip. 

 

 I am going to assume these are the same drivers as you finally got to work last spring -- no reinstall of the operating system etc.  please correct me if you reinstalled windows. 

 

 

Is this the same computer that ran Wurm ok before? Did you upgrade operating system or anything since then? Some of Wurm's recent graphics improvements were hardest on older systems. The console.log should help spot what specific settings to adjust.

 

(With older Intel graphics I generally suggest -- start in game options at 640x480 windows resizeable, if you get ingame ok  then maximize to fullscreen so you do not have a tiny window, and see if that gets you started. Make sure all reflections shadows bloom larger textures etc are off.  Later you can tweak more for better settings).

*** this part is, me being curious, if this is the same laptop, how did you go from having  physical memory  4006256 last spring, to the current number of physical memory 2443632k. I know sometimes laptops divert part of the ram to integrated graphics, but I thought that was usually showing up in physical vs available memory.

About the physical memory: I honestly don't know what happened.I did notice that my PC is working a lot slower than it used to without overheating etc. I tried different ways of fixing it and I never made it. Now it's just like that, from a not-so-bad laptop it went to terrible. There's one thing that I haven't yet checked, however I don't think it has any connection. I spilled some coffee on my laptop's keyboard once. I instantly cut it off power and started drying it. Took out the keyboard etc etc. The keyboard wasn't working for a month or two, and then I just decided to plug it in once again and now it works just fine. As far as I know the coffee didn't hit any important parts, but still.

 

Also, I reinstalled Win 7 a couple of times.

 

EDIT: I just read what I did the last time I had this problem. Now I have my drivers up to date and it still doesn't work... Ok, maybe the Intel graphics are not up to date but I just simply can't find the right driver. The automatic driver installer says that I should not risk downloading it from the web because (something something not sure what).

It looks like its 32-bit windows? Maybe I am reading it wrong since last spring you said 64-bit. On the other hand if you reinstalled the operating system "many times" maybe there is some reason you went 32-bit this time and maybe that has something to do with it not showing the full 4 gigs of ram (I am getting old and can't remember always how these things work anymore, but it seems my daughters desktop did the same, showed less then 3G ram under 32-bit Win7 but when we installed 64-bit, she got her full 4Gigs showing). In any case, you had 64-bit java last spring (which handles memory errors better) but 32-bit java now, I think because you now have a 32-bit OS. So last spring probably went easier. You had better OS, better java version,  and better video drivers. 

 

The Intel drivers you have now are probably ones that came with windows so it is pretty important to get the correct ones working from the Intel site, especially if you are already limited in your memory and java versions.  Like you, I found it confusing which driver was correct however your Pentium B960 processor is Sandy Bridge chipset and when I used the Intel link for that, I got this graphics driver for the Intel HD graphics (the top option, 32-bit Win7,  looks like the correct one to me):

Use the driver for 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® HD Graphics 3000/2000

 

Laptop makers are notorious for making it difficult for you to update through the Intel site, because they want you to run the old stable drivers that have been tested with office apps and give their call centers fewer headaches. The problem is, those are older generic drivers and generally don't work well with OpenGL games.  I would probably make sure System Restore is active and working, and make a restore point first then download and install the linked Intel driver above. 

 

Feel free to wait for someone else to confirm my links.

 

** also, last spring you mentioned getting updated drivers including nvidia ones. That might have been for onboard sound or something but can you find your acer aspire laptop's exact model number so we can confirm whether it has ONLY the Intel HD graphics, or both Intel + Nvidia graphics? I think it is this acer aspire model but not 100 percent sure.

You, sir, know a lot. From what you are saying it's better for me (and my PC) to get the 64 bit OS. Which can be done, because the last reinstall happened just two weeks ago. I must have missed the info that it was 32 bit somehow.


 


Anyway, the Acer model I am using has the Nvidia graphics as well. I double checked it, once in dxdiag and the second time when I opened the laptop to clean it out of potential coffee inside.


 


I don't have much on my PC so I can safely reinstall the OS back to 64 bit, which I am going to do next week. Right after I do it I'll find the thread and post the effects.

Ok what you need to do, is go to NVidia control panel and tell it to use the nvidia as the default graphics for all programs (this uses up more battery power, which is why you have two different graphic adapters, intel + nvidia. NVidia is for gaming but sucks battery life faster). There is also some way to tell it to specifically use the nvidia adapter whenever Wurm's java launcher is started, but I can only recall offhand the "easier" way of saying "Nvidia just for everything". As far as I know, its ostly just java based games that cause this problem. 

 

The 64-bit Windows is much better to use. There is really no "cons" and only "pros".  If you do this, I also suggest you then install ONLY Java 8 64-bit and no 32-bit versions (ignore anything marked x86 as that is 32-bit). Otherwise people often find the game is running on 32-bit java even though they have both 32 and 64 bit installed.

In the Nvidia control panel I set it just for wurm's launcher to always use the Nvidia graphics. However, doing so in the general settings seems to have helped. The game runs just fine, and although I've lost all of my items it's still great.
