Posted November 27, 2014 I am unable to lead my chickens once they start following another chicken or rooster, which they do automatically if in proximity to another chicken or rooster. I tried taming them, but they still remain on auto-follow to the other chicken or rooster with no apparent way to make them stop. I hope the disease potential has been dropped for more than three chickens in a square because there is no way (that I see) to relieve the overcrowding. Is there some way to lead them or make them stop following another chicken once they start?
Posted November 27, 2014 (edited) Hens following rooster and chickens following hens.Lead rooster and move him thru gate (locking it after he pass it) to move away distracting elements. Edited November 27, 2014 by Jerrywalker
Posted November 27, 2014 (edited) Kill the rooster, problem solved. All Hens are liberated \o/ Hens only follow hens who follow a rooster. (hens will "jump" through a locked gate or even a solid fence I am pretty sure, though there are some circumstances where they are stopped, maybe by a house wall?) Posted November 27, 2014 So, I unlocked a gate, moved the rooster through, then locked the gate. The hens are still following from the other side of the gate. Is there a period of time to wait for the auto-follow to drop off?
Posted November 27, 2014 lol, kill the rooster and waste all that grain I fed him to fatten him up? Good point though. He is completely useless. He isn't even necessary to sustain the future of the flock.
Posted November 27, 2014 (edited) The grain was wasted the minute you gave it to the rooster. Keeping him alive won't get it back and will only mean even more grain is wasted. If course if you extend this far enough, you will realize all chickens are a waste but I like a few around anyway. I have hens on one pasture and roosters elsewhere, looking handsome and in a showoff location but well out of sight of the ladies, or with on,y one lady escort. You probably have eggs with a new rooster inside, it's possible that male chicks are safe to have around and just move him before he matures. Kill the rooster, let the hens rejoice.
