Please Stop Using Google Analytics!

Recommended Posts

Please stop using Google Analytics in the forum, main website, and game client.

I run a web browser without javascript and cookies turned on to prevent running into it on the web, but regardless if I select to not submit client data I still see "INFO: Event successfully posted to Google Analytics" in the console.

I see that Google Analytics is an unethical survailence system that the NSA may or may not be using to build profiles of people. I don't care if the data is being anonymized in this instance. I don't want to enable the use of google products that uses nonfree javascript(which should be a good enough reason to not use it). I boycott Google and don't wish to use a product that is sending data to its servers.

If you still want to collect data please use Piwik licensed under GPLv3. Piwik can still be used as a surveillance system but at least you get to control the data and it isn't being sent to a google server that you have no control over.

I do not like tracking myself, but I know there are ways to combat this if you are against it.

I use several tracking blockers. This very thread comes up with 31 things it blocks (on this page, it blocks facebook connect, google analytics, google+ platform and gravatar to name a few, for example. I think one of them is even the threadstarters avatar =-) ) . Some parts of the site the programs show 99+ blocked. Seems a bit much indeed, haha. I dont know much about all this though, but I do know I dont like being tracked. I probably block valid content too but 99+ seems a bit excessive to me :)

(I use the opera browser with the ghostery, blur (formerly donottrackme) and disconnect extensions, in case someone is curious)

I know too little of it to really have a say in it, so I am not against or pro-whatever it is they are using. Just thought I had a little extra input on the subject :)

You have to be careful with any software that reports how it is protecting you. They tend to pad their positive results with things that might track you if you use social media like facebook or stuff like websites internal tracking of likes, post count. or friends. In the worst cases, some of the stuff isn't even present but they are trying to feed your paranoia so you will keep using them.

I only run Wurm via https://www.torproject.org/

Big Pro: If you are getting banned they will not be able to track you other accounts to ban them too. Even the NSA would have troubles to find out  :P

Even if Wurm would be run by the NSA they would have troubles finding out who I am if I am unsing TOR but that's not the subject....

Well Rolf will hate me for that but this is the easiest way to prevent the client to collect data of you via google: http://www.ccsf.edu/Policy/Privacy/ga.html

Hey i have fixed the bug where that option was not working, so it will now work to disable sending data to Google analytics  with the "send client data?" option set to "Never Submit"

This fix will be in the next client update.

Who the hell cares, if you're doing dodgy stuff the NSA would sting you for, you shouldn't be doing it.

While I agree completely Aether, I still think that we should be able to do whatever we like online without someone tracking it.  I mean does anyone track which magazines or newspapers you buy?  Or what books you read?

Matter of principle.

If they are bought with anything other than cash, then most likely yes, those type of purchases can be and probably are being tracked. Just sayin'.

INFO: Event successfully posted to Google Analytics

Yeah that line bothers me every time I see it.

Well kidding aside there is room for concern about government surveillance even if one is doing "nothing wrong". History is swarming with examples of government officials abusing their power and authority, especially when they believe its for the common good. Nixon, J Edgar Hoover, etc... and those are just the high level examples from the United States.

Not even getting into the countless, numerous minor officials at state and local levels. Unfortunately there have been a few (too many) of them that have crossed the line (examples cited towards the end of the article):

I assume you're being sarcastic? This line of thinking can be used to enable pretty much any bad behavior from any bad government.

Yes, because the big brother is always watching over us.

I get it the security concerns 'till certain level, past it, is just paranoia.

Also, have to add, than more that enable bad behaviour from governments, the one that could do more fun stuff are private corporations(ISPs, Google, CodeClub AB, etc).

I don't give a damn if the NSA or whatever government tracks my every move on the internet... I'm more worried about the evil-Rolfs out there that can track and use my info for the devils work.

Governments are governments. It's Mark Zuckerberg who has no business with his nose in everything I do. Before long, toilet paper rolls will come with a "share" and "like" button.

/TIN FOIL HAT TIME!!!!!

Echelon has been recording every electronic communication since the 1970s, and you're worried about Google's advertisement ploys?

So what, they might send some questionable or requested info back to the NSA ? We live in a police state. Your neighbor watches what you do to report it back to facebook, or whoever else will listen to them. Cameras are on every major city's corner, recording what goes on. Hell, in metro New York City area, the cops have these fancy gadgets attached to their car so that they can scan barcodes on your car and find out all about your driving record, your insurance record, etc., all before even looking at you. Your personal information is often sold on a daily basis by any private, corporate entity that picks it up for as little as fractions of a cent.

Screw the NSA, and screw the people that instigate the fear propaganda. If the NSA (and whoever else) wants to waste their time analyzing tax paying nobodies like me, who have nothing to show except for watching porn, playing video games, and talking about their medical marijuana permits once in a while on the internet... let them eat their hearts out. The more they waste resources on watching people that turn out to be not worth watching/"fruitless", the quicker their program collapses/becomes useless.

Take America's decades long "War on Drugs" effort as an example. The program has failed for so long now that even local police entities are publicly admitting that it was very flawed/skewed and has been a complete waste of resources from the get-go.

Basically, I'm saying don't let "big brother" scare you... that's what it wants to keep its relevance. Instead, flip them the bird and remind them they can't push their 'Nineteen Eighty Four' ###### on you (at least, not until they start trying to charge you and everyone else for thought crimes).
