Posted September 23, 2014 It is possible mathematically to calc how much skill should go to one or the other if the two wood and metal were merged. Granted only Rolf and whomever else has seen the skillgain formulas would be able to create such And aye with shield dmg, it could be made greater with wood and less so with metal. Not sure about the tortoise shell one. Idealy yes, realistically no If skillgain was completely dependent on skill level then you would be able to calculate it, however as skillgain is not like that you technically cannot. As skillgain varies more with "difficulty" if you like. If you have 90lms and go hunting with a 90ql shield you will get very little/no skill ticks. If you had 1 lms and did the same, even with such a high ql shield and against say wild horses (so low difficulty, but normal in relation to skill) you would be fine and get skill ticks
Posted September 23, 2014 Overall shield skill would also be a lot harder to gain with only 3 subskills.

Posted September 24, 2014 +1 to combining them into three skills, especially if the math is doable. But let's not forget that they just recently learned how averages work
Posted September 24, 2014 Want a good reading on shields, check out this: http://www.myarmoury.com/feature_shield.html Not a complete coverage of all shields; however, it covers the essentials.
Posted September 24, 2014 +1 But this will make angry the few people who spent time to rise up all the 6 subskills.

Posted October 31, 2014 +1 Does anyone know why there are separate skill categories for wooden and metal shields? As someone who is relatively new to Wurm, and that is just now getting into the idea of using shields, it is a little confusing. Maybe there is a logical explanation. Then it would make sense to have the skill separation. If not, why wouldn't it be a good idea to combine them? Other than the same tired reasons we get for all other odd game mechanics, "-1, QQ It's because Wurm logic (a.k.a. absence of logic), and that's how it's always been." Yes, we get it. You had to walk uphill, both ways, and in the snow to get to school. That should not mean that improvements to the game cannot be made.
Posted October 31, 2014 Aaron, maybe 1 explination could be that like so many years ago, there was less skills total than we have today. So having 6 skills instead of 3 was a hugh "Filler". A good example could be to ask why are the Lego Paper Boxes in the toyshop so BIG when you buy them, but there is so few plastic lego pieces inside when you unwrap it.
