Weather forecasts

Recommended Posts

Although not medieval, but meh.

Simply put, the weather is decided by some algorithmic RNG model making gradual changes to the weather over time.

The suggestion is to delay the actual weather 8-10 hours, and letting the RNG roll be the basis of a weather forecast of the weather we will experience 8-10 hours from now. A command like /forecast will give us the desired info.

However, to spice things up, the /forecast will only give an accurate weather prediction 50% of the time, will give moderately incorrect weather prediction 30% of the time, and wildly incorrect 20% of the time.

Edit:  a spell has been suggested, that could work too. Non-priest could then ask in Freedom chat to hear if someone knows what the weather forecast is for today.

You could always make it a Vynora spell, or something you can use on the Knowledge meditation path.

That's not entirely true. People have been predicting weather for as long as there's been people and weather. It hasn't always been as accurate as it is now, and some forecasting may have been influenced by superstition, but legitimate predictions can be made without fancy radars.

As the sailing over to....on....and back over from Xanadu cus of it's size we REALY need this.

Maybe give all Priests a spell that shows them the weath for the next 24 Wurm hrs or praying at an Altar by a Priest or Follower would give you another op to click on "Ask the weather gods".

We could realy realy do with this in-game....great idea Lord Cista ;)

How about enabling us to build weather stations (similar in appearance to mailboxes, but with medieval style antenna-like things sticking out) at harbors or wherever else you might want them. Quality of it could determine it's accuracy and how many wurm hours ahead it would tell the weather. Maybe a spell cast on it could decide one of those factors and one of the characteristic skills could determine how well we could operate the thing.

Well American Indians used "weather sticks" made of birch that would bend according to the humidity, like a primitive, but functional barometer. They were just long, thin sticks stuck pointing out sideways from some flat surface. The stick curled upwards during dry weather and downwards to indicate coming bad weather. Would probably be better than medieval antennas.

An item could be made using something like a shaft, square piece of cloth, and birch branch. Creates a forecasting pole which looks like a flagpole with a stick coming out of the side. The flag would show the wind direction and the stick would predict coming rain. If you clicked on it, you could get a more detailed forecast.

The only weather that affects anything on Wurm is wind. In the real world, a lot can be predicted merely by wind direction, but I don't honestly expect the java coding for Wurm weather to be anything other than a handful of dice-rolls.

That said, there's no reason that a native of Wurm couldn't understand Wurm-weather. So roll the dice early and delay onset.

I'd like to see a craftable flag that behaves like a windsock, giving visible wind-direction and strength as smoke does now. It would be nice to have something you could right-click to get the same information as you currently get from /weather, whilst being something you can determine at a glance at the same time. Of course, you could reverse-read it to find compass direction, but you can do as much with campfire smoke.

The same mechanic could allow mini-flags to be equipped on moving vehicles ... who wouldn't want a flag flapping from the top of a mast. And you could even have little ribbon flags on the corner(s) of your large cart to help you not get turned around in a forest on a windy day. Anyone fancy carrying a flag whilst walking or riding, like a standard bearer ? And of course, decorative weather-vanes which simply show wind-direction.

Anyway, back on topic; full-sized weather-flags could not only give you current weather conditions, but give a forecast option as well. Perhaps your ability to forecast at all, and then how accurately, could be based on mind-logic. Perhaps you could even predict a string of future weather changes.

I don't think my flag-concept would help predict fog though, so there's scope for other instruments.

when we say weather we talking rain or we talking wind

cause I don't care about fog rain snow ect

and wind seems a bit to high tech for modern day people so unless its some form of vynora magic (shes the deity of the ocean get over it) seems a bit to high tech for wurm

why make it a spell? useless... just make it available for everyone, since everyone will use it for sailing.

What's the fun in that?  lol    part of the enjoyment in wurm is that some things are unexpected, and some things you should work for.   Same with anything, weather forecasting isn't something you can wet your finger up and stick it out to determine wind direction, it takes a little bit more knowledge then your average Joe would be expected to know off the bat instantly.  Should be a skill worth building, given by the gods, etc not just something everyone can  instantly know.  Hell people have been saying the same thing about local distance and /who to get server pop.  Its nice the developers do know when to compromise.      :D

I agree this would be nice for Xanadu the place has wind changes and fog coming in all the time. It gets really annoying to be setting out and then a fog comes in and your sitting in the middle of the ocean just going the hell do i do now?

+1 I am not sure how Wurm weather is determined though I assume it is random. My suggestion might not be possible but I will share it regardless.

One (or a combination) of several methods could be used:

A* A medium-high difficulty crafted item with a non-improvable and final QL (think compass) which would either work as-is or require an enchantment to tell estimated wind speeds and directions for the next few Wurm days.

B* A simple improvable item with predictions based on Quality and Forecasting Skill (nature subskill or a topskill itself). This could be done with or without a new skill.

C* --To Be Determined--

Okay now here is the discussion. Once someone has predicted the weather its not absolute, even in modern day there are errors. SO, if someone manages to acquire a 5 day forecast in Wurm and then shares said forecast on the forum/kchat/etc:

*Why would anyone else bother to mess with it?

*Rain and other weather are purely aesthetic so

should it be included at all?

*Feel free to discuss more. In a slower paced game where sailing is highly dependant on wind direction and speed, weather prediction would be a great help in planning Long trips.

Hedge magic!

Medieval times had numerous hedge magicians, their magic mostly being forms of divination and the like.  This would fit nicely into those categories ;)

No. Stop gating content thru the Priest system. Stop making it so all of us MUST have a Priest alt. I appreciate the fact that many Players of Wurm have Priests and want to see more utility from them but at the same time it's not cool for those of us that don't have a Priest to see another suggestion for more new features being funneled into the Priest category.

Make it for everyone. Don't worry... Rolf will nerf it and make it horrible to gain skill in like Meditation ... but then it would be available to all characters that way instead of just Priests.

I think the "vision" type things that you get from meditation could be used for this, with predicting up to 2-3 wurm days in advance. Maybe with a small % chance of totally wrong predictions xD

But of course, weather would probably need to be more of an impact on the game before this happens...

Exactly!

its funny its mostly priests themselves who want this extra future to be for priests.
Nope. make it available for anyone as weather prediction has nothing to do with needing a priest.

Its just using the natural elements to "predict" the weather. No spells or magic needed.
