New Skill - Mountain Climbing

Recommended Posts

Occurs to me that mountain climbing would come in handy in Xan.  It would be easy to implement since we already have ropes, hammers and could easily make bolts, pitons, crampons, hooks, etc.

Be cool to reach some of those rock mountain ledges and perches for a better view.

What about grinding up the climbing skill already in game?

It makes a difference.

The climbing skill is useless and has little to no effect on how far you can climb. Not to mention that skillgain on it is so incredibly slow even at low levels that it's not even worth the time to try grinding it...I know because I've attempted it.

Haven't maxed climbing, but don't believe some of these rock faces are scaleable.  Time will tell.

Grab a pick, and start surface mining! :)

I don't want to see grapples, personally. I enjoy that some terrain can't exactly be reached, at least without a LOT of work.

You can always make wooden fences to get to the top - if you carry cart with you properly, you can easily make it to the top without even descending while climbing.

wooden fences, tent, log off and wait for hours, random teleportation, tunnel up... :)

body stamina plays a huge effect in climbing from what I recall.  It's just like every other skill, there's always the main skill and one or two lesser skills that all factor into it.

Except that climbing should be the primary skill in determining how far you can climb, not body stamina as much. Climbing doesn't even really contribute to how far you can climb.

I'll stop here considering this is a suggestion thread.

well i can safely say goat shape works now,and also climbing skill determines how far u can go, it just takes alot of it to be noticeable, and it's more dependent on body stamina.

i guess it needs to depend more on climbing skill and less on body stamina

I wouldn't mind seeing a new item like a piton (spike designed for driving into rock cracks for mountain climbing) that would let me recover stamina on a slope (and hopefully not fall off) if used with the existing climbing skill.

Use hammer - piton. Tether myself. Hope that the climbing check behind the scenes was successful.

There was a similar suggestion from me two years ago or more. Now I am already of other sentence. I am satisfied, that I could enter almost peaks..... and the generality of people, cannot. :-]

Then again I am grinding the climbing in Xanadu (Inde too, center of Chaos, too ;)) there is a plenty place for journey "with climbing" and "easy" grind with adventure.

Speaking as someone who lives up a mountain?

A better climbing experience would be helpful.  Maybe a special kind of rope that is harder to make than cordage rope that can be attached to steep tile boundaries to allow stamina recovery at a slow rate.  Add in the ability to reclaim it and a VERY quick decay rate (vanishes in 2 hours if left unattended).  Make the climbing skill effect the regen speed and you might be on for a winner.

It kills me the number of times on the forums I've seen: "It's broken, but we found a bandaid-fix-workaround, so no further discussion needed. -1 to your suggestion."

If a business worked that way, you'd all be out of business. But I guess some people are so afraid of change they actively fight it.

Try to take a peek outside of your tiny box, and realice that people might genuinely have a diferent opinion.   Ive climbed high mountains/hills, even as a new player.   I looked at the system, I tested to see how it worked, and I inmediately found a way to complish what I wanted by using the tools that the system gave me.

I dont care if the item I use is called "fence" instead of "pyton", or that I eat "sandwiches" instead of drinking "mountain climbing powerade".  Use the tools you have around you, learn the system, be a little bit inventive, basically, use your head.

Just fix the current skill instead of making an entirely new one.

I would just change the "fix" for an "expand".

That works too. Basically we have an existing skill, work on that instead.

Or suggest a change which is more Logical, less Wogical and watch the game develop into something even more amazing than it already is.

Just because you figured out a way to do something, doesn't mean its the logical way, the right way or the best way.

Sure, currently it's the only way, but that's the entire point of this thread.

I'm sorry, but someone trying to accomplish some old school mountaineering isn't going to drag up cumbersome lumber to build a fence to lean on every 10 feet. It's much easier to carry a rope.

Trake, what I mean is, there arent many diferent things to "climb", only sloped tiles, and there is a skill that is used for that very specific purpose.   So I fail to see how a NEW skill would be needed, isnt it redundant to have two skills for one single action, for one single and very specific situation?

Sure the skill could use some love, maybe polish the skill a bit.  But you dont need to carry logs to climb, just a couple of tools, and then you can just work with the terrain and the resources you have around you.   I wont propose a rehaul of the skill, or a new skill, because I can acomplish that goal with the current system, even by diferent means that can be adapted to diferent character skills, available resources, etc.

I just wouldnt want to see the climbing hability to become too watered down,  I dont think that climbing mountains should be an entry level activity. (eventhough right now it pretty much is)
