How did you discover Wurm?

Recommended Posts

Title says it all mostly. I'm curious as to how people, new or old, found out about Wurm's existence and their reaction to it, how they enjoyed it etc.

I came across it by a friend telling me about it asking me if I knew any games like Wurm, without actually mentioning it. So, something like:

"Know a game where we can join a massive land, like kilometers long, which we can change and build on with other people as we see fit.. you know.. settle, farm, etc?"

I pretty much said his hopes were way too high and there was nothing like that, as I'd have searched for that exact thing for hours on end to no avail. There's some stuff but.. not that great. "What about Wurm?"

And here I am. About 4 of us now own a little settlement and are waiting on Xanadu.

A friend who was trying to interest me in mine craft at the time (but I was opposed to the block style graphics) found out about this as they were releasing info about 1.0. We kept following it and joined up a couple days before (then switched to pristine) on launch. He has since become too busy to play, but here I am enjoying it still \o/

I was watching a video on Youtube for an Asheron's Call emulator, in one of the comments somebody mentioned Wurm, I've been hooked ever since.

A friend was looking for sandbox MMO after playing Eve for a while.

He didn't like to grind missions there, and of course didn't stayed in here cuz of grinding.

was playing eve-online and minecraft " Tekkit <-- now known as Tekkit Classic "

and a few friends mentioned Wurm Online

i tried it and wasn't 100% sold on it.

some friends joined in and we started a settlement. most of it was my money.

after starting to understand how to use the not so stand UI

i really liked how its not a game you master it in a short amount of time

and the maps was so big and persistent.

that i haven't left. annoyed at odds and ends but its overall a good game. just

alot of information to filter thru and stuff to learn.

side note. the friends who helped me get hooked. all left cause of issues with

client issues "crashing, leaks, unplayable" and well didn't like or could deal with skilling system

I was playing Ryzom at the time the developers decided to do character wipes for the "good" of the economy.  I read in a Ryzom discussion forum that another player was going to quit to play Wurm since all his work went down the drain.  I had never heard of the game, so I checked it out and liked it.

Back in 2008 I was watching a friend playing this game and he got me hooked.  Not sure whether to thank him or forgive him for that.

A girl I was TOTALLY crushing on was stuck doing mission work in Africa and Wurm was like the only game out of a very short list her Internet/PC allowed her to play.  She said it was "sorta like WoW" lol.

Like 4 years later, here I am still...

PC Gamer had it in an article of "Top 100 Free Games", or something like that, back in 2008-2009 or so.  I entered Golden Valley not too long after the /b/ invasion had dwindled a bit.

I only wish I joined when he first told me about it, 3 years ago or more.

I made a good friend in Second Life while i was addicted to that. eventually i got out of second life and was playing Runescape... he was annoyed by me constantly talking about Runescape and got me to try wurm with him(i did think worms game first xD).

I was hooked pretty much right away. We played together on golden valley for like a week or 2, then i decided to spend my money on premium. He didn't premium up with me so i was on my own from then on. I was like "I'm gonna train up on inde and go to wild when i get good enough" and so a year after I did go to wild :)

Looked on Notchs Wikipedia page in a fit of boredom one day, saw his past projects list and boom there was wurm!

I've always like these simulation, role-playing and crafting type games. First, I played Runescape quite sometime, got membership and stuff but when the bots are like everywhere, it made me quit the game soo I started looking for other games like Runescape :) I found archeage but it's taking them forever to release the game and I can no longer wait, so I browsed games from MMORPG.com

I saw "Wurm Online". It got me so curious like "Why the hell would you name a game from a squishy, invertebrate animal?"... Well, I dunno maybe wurm might be another object or place... all i know it's sound like worm... Anyway, yea, so I said to myself I'll try it... then poof, it's so unique, it's the ONLY game i played for more than a month.. lol

I didn't really "discover" Wurm, rather I was frantically trying to avoid it for many years. I was confident that it wasn't for me due to the graphics which I had seen glimpses of in videos, I expected it to be more of a slow almost text-based game like the old Neverwinter Nights. ..

I wonder how many out there have the same image of Wurm and stay away.

Exactly the same as me, but it was 2 yrs after my brother tried to get me to play.

I first started Wurm about late 2005 or early 2006 can't remember exactly when.

I was already bored of WoW and looking for an alternative.

I found it through some googling for sandbox games.

I played for half a month, living as a hermit, before quitting out of frustration and waiting a few months to try the game again.

Did that about four or five times before I actually settled and started paying prem.

Use to play ALOT of "Fallen Earth" but then lost my job and could not keep up with the Prem payments...

So went looking for a Free 2 Play crafting game......LOTS and LOTS of hours later i find this DIAMOND IN THE RUFF - Wurm Online.

Clocking up my 5th year now on this game and STILL loving it.....but it was a very hard game to find ....hint hint - more people need to find out about this game.

Oh and "Fallen Earth" is now F2P so it's my fallback game to play when Wurm is down or i burn out LOL

Also...

"7 Days to Die"

"Kerbal Space Program"

and "Space Engineers"  :)
