  1. Originally I had only planned to ask a few people here and there in-game about the topic at hand, however that wouldn't be fair to anyone else who has an opinion or a suggestion and would like to contribute. I intend this thread only to be as a check-in for those of you in the community who wish to talk seriously about the game economy. I do not intend this thread to be a place to debate opinions and facts. This thread is intended to remain friendly and free of bias. This thread should remain clean and void of any aggression or derailment. Following these guidelines, if you'd like to be part of a private group discussion concerning the current economy in Wurm, please leave a post here saying "Add me" All of those who ask to be added to the discussion will be added to a message group. Any of those who don't care to talk about the topic can pass this thread and move along. See you all during the discussion! As a reminder, please only respond to this thread by asking to be added to the personal-message-discussion. If the message group fills up (and it should) we will either start several message groups over the topic or use an outside source to host the conversation.
  2. For those of you worried there will be some huge land grab on Xanadu when it opens and all the rich old accounts will buy up all the prime coastal real estate, I sat down and worked on the math for all of you Chicken Littles. Listen, Xanadu will be 16x the size of Independence or Chaos, that's huge, so let's put it in perspective. Xanadu's map will be 64x64 kilometers, that's 4,096 square kilometers of map. Judging by the water percentages of Indy and Release, the amount of land to water is about 50%. That leaves 2,048 square kilometers of land to settle on and explore. One tile in Wurm is 4m, so that's 250 tiles per kilometer. 250x250 is 62,500 tiles per square kilometer. Okay, so that's 62,500 times 2,048 sq/km. That gives us a play area of 128,000,000 tiles. Wow. 128 million tiles, can you imagine? So if EVERYONE that plays at one time, say 1000 players on at once, plops down a 100x100 deed (10,000 tiles each) that means they would use up 0.78125% of the land on Xanadu. (1,000,000 divided by 128 million). So please, everyone relax. You'll find your place in the sun!
  3. Remember that if he does not announce changes to Traders they will pay out a HUGE amount of coin early on during the Life of the Server as players come in and buy things from the towns Traders and make Deeds. Also all of the Traders in the Main Towns will have a very large sum of Coin early on from all the Purchases that Happen during the Initial Rush onto a New Server. Of Course Rolf "could" change something, but I have never seen him change anything to do with Traders Yet. To give an example when Pristine opened there was endless amounts of silvers to be had from the Traders in Blossom. I decided after I found Silver Ore a few days into Pristine to go all out on Jewelry Smithing and gained well over 3 Gold from those Traders in a few days. If you buy one Trader you can buy additional Traders for less than 40s from that one. Also Land costs appear to be even cheaper now and you can make a Larger Deed for less coin. Most Traders level out to earning around 6-8s a month over time, But the initial months can bring 40, 50, or more silver to each Trader as the players flood into the Server purchasing Settlement Forms, Merchant Contracts, and among other things Trader Contracts as well. Just Beware and be Prepared as a Very Nice opportunity will occur for much coin for a few months after this Server Launches. Anyhow have fun! o/
  4. This is my thought on how xanadu could be a way to merge the servers Instead of dividing the playerbase with a new cluster or just a massive link to the side, they could include the new server land as part of xanadu. i drew up a basic image (2 mins tops) of how it could be (could be moved around a bit in any way the devs want) This would eliminate any issues of cross-server travel, give even chaos a broader area to play around in, and connect the new cluster all in one shot. It seems like a possible thing, considering the devs didnt want us making a map of it (because it might not be the same map). and this CA quote from http://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/99870-get-away-xana-poo/ By klaa: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xanadu... It will change everything... including the forums. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- That's my 2 cents, pick it apart as you please.
  5. I was dissatisfied with the other poll, so I made a new one, which I think is more concise. In no way do I mean any offense to the poster of the other thread, but I don't think his options were enough for me or most people. If I need to add more options to this poll, please let me know.
  6. Well everyone else is making polls so why not..at least it is not some crazy poll on made up stuff just a simple poll about it being open to everyone or a fresh start again.
  7. The Grand Compromise (Or A Treatise on Mailboxes) Fresh Start or Everyone Invited? The main reason (as i see it) for people wanting a fresh start server is a more equal distribution of sales revenue from crafted items. The idea is that a more inclusive economy (lots of sellers at different skills) will capture the interest of more new players, thus increasing the new player retention rate. The current mailing system (particularly on a large server) creates a winner take all system, in which the best crafter(s) will get the lions share of the sales. Take away the mailboxes, and the transport costs take away the uber crafters comparative advantage. The effects will be greater the larger the server. This would make a sort of 'Grand Compromise", allowing old accounts on the server, while giving new accounts more market share in the selling of crafted items. Mail or No Mail? Admittedly, mailboxes are a great convenience we all love and rely on. The question is, does the benefit of a more inclusive economy outweigh the costs of cheap item transfers over long distances? For servers the size of Indy and smaller, i would say the costs of no mail outweigh the benefits. For a much larger server, I could say the benefits outweighing the hassle of no mail boxes. Restrictions on Mail Furthermore, it does not need to a be choice between mail or no mail. Restrictions to the mail system could accomplish the goal of a more inclusive economy. For starters, the mail price of 10-20 copper might be too small for a server the size of Xanadu. A higher mailing fee would encourage more local trading, and could be adjusted often to meet the goals/desires of the DEVS. A second approach would be to tie the mailing cost to the distance between mailboxes. A Third approach would be to limit the range a mailbox covers, say 2k -4k tiles, or perhaps make that range depend on the strength of the enchant of the mailbox. Practical Matters Rolf is very adamant about not splitting up code between servers, so whatever will be good for Xanadu will need to be implemented on the existing servers. So the complete removal of the mail system sounds like a political dead end. Limiting the range a mailbox can cover could be feasible. If the limit was 4k tiles, existing servers would see no effect, although I personally feel that range would be too large for a very inclusive economy on Xanadu, but limiting that range by cast strength (that decays with use) would alleviate some of that. The idea of mail cost being a function of distance is a bit more practical. An example would be 10c to mail the first 3k tiles and the price would double (10c, 20, 40, 80, 160...) for each additional 1k tiles. The easiest idea to implement from the devs point of view (uneducated guess) would be a flat increase in mailing cost. This would not require any additional computations, and could seemingly be adjusted often until the desired effect was reached. The major downside is the uproar from the existing servers would be rather severe.
  8. Please make Xanadu like Pristine/Release (fresh start), but without possibility to plant Traders to avoid "The Drama". I know we need place to buy tokens/merchants/sleep powders/magic chests etc., but you can implement "Spirit Traders" who can only sell items (no draining) and who cost for example 1000 Karma to place and then 100/week to maintain. Villagers could work together to maintain Spirit Trader on their deed by completing missions. Wurm is giving possibility to be real community game, but in other hand it's giving tools to keep players just on their one person deeds without any interactions with other players / deed owners in game*. They just ordering what they need by forum and checking mailbox. What would happen if we get rid of them? Now I'm not trying to get high blacksmithing, because I know, that I can order any 90ql tool for the price of 1k bricks. If we get rid of spirit castles on such a huge server you would make place for a lot more Master Carpenters, Master WeaponSmiths, Master Tanners and for a lot local markets. Even having personal merchant on own deed and letting people to travel and visiting you to get best quality armour/tools/weapons would be great. With real regional veins (except of iron?), if west people would have to travel couple of hours to far east to get gold it would make prices of gold lumps/jewelry different depends on location. Marble and Slate veins would determinate architecture in different parts of Xanadu. If you would let us to make tools/weapons from copper, bronze, brass, tin etc. with (without) small differences of for example speed/durability/imping difficulty you could make iron regional as well. And one more thing - don't let us to transfer money from old clusters. More real money for Wurm and less huge deeds since server start. Not really popular suggestions, but I would like to see it ingame. *I know, that everyone has right to play whatever they like and I know, that I don't have to use "mailboxes", but I need to if I want to sell my items. I just would like Wurm to be more social game with more ingame interaction with other players.
  9. I'm looking at Wurm again because of the automatic email they sent me. After looking into the server I really liked the concept of a giant map, to make communities more important, and also make it easier for the hermit types to find interesting places. It's been really hard to find any information on the server though, I assume it's because a lot of the major aspects are still up in the air and subject to change. I personally have been playing Wurm on-and-off since Golden Valley was created in about 2 - 6 month intervals. I'm personally worried about Xanadu, I'd really like it to be the thing that gets me to play again. I assume they're releasing this mega-server with the hopes that it attracts a lot of new players, but due to it's size, it will be hard for people to find good equipment, and many new players will probably want to live on their own anyway, I know I did when I first started. I'm worried because if they allow people from all the freedom isles to sail over with their skills intact, I feel it would simply achieve relocating the people who are already loyal to the game instead of attracting new players, and with their skills just build new deeds without much change from where they came from, except a lot more space and I'm not so certain that the size alone is what will attract people. In such a large server where people are few and far between, most of them living alone, or many of the newbies coming in because of the new server, will run into difficulty getting good equipment. What I'm trying to say is, I think if they actually want to attract new people to a new mega server where there's so much space anyone can build their own little settlement as far away as other people as they want, (which they usually do) I think some sort of increased skill-gain needs to exist to allow the new players to build their own deeds and enjoy the game, because as freedom skill-gain currently is, (painfully slow unless you're dedicated) I just feel that will turn off many players, and I feel the major appeal for the epic servers like Desertion, isn't the PvP, it's the increased skill-gain, at least that's what it is for me. Since I don't have the time or the will to endlessly grind a skill just so I can start having fun by finally being able to get to the part of Wurm it was intended for, (building things) if they really want a mega-server to do well, they need to make skill-gain better to make up for the distance between places and to attract new players and let them make their mark on the land in a timely fashion. obviously, this is just my opinion and I'm not afraid of being "wrong" so feel free to share your opinion aswell.
  10. Post all of your pics, here are mine. http://pics.nesgamepro.com/wurm/xanadu_test
  11. OK so the thing is naming the new map Xanadu and not following any historical or mythological record is in my mind a blasphemous and slanderous use of it. Its also sad that a number of peoples only reference to Xanadu is a 80's pop culture show gone horribly wrong. I didnt see anything during the testing that led me to believe that there was anything there that would amount to using the name Xanadu. Yes its a huge map, and im not trying to take anything away from that. But a huge landmass alone doesnt really evoke any sense of Xanadu. So I would propose a naming contest to rename the new server to something more appropriate and """original""" Some basic rules #1 Name Submissions must be original and not in current or historical / mythological records, archives. ok ok ok so we need a few more #2 No player names or variants on them #3 No Movie/Song/Theatre Names or variants on them It just needs to be original and or that possibly has some WURM connotations. Have the devs pick 20 or so from the submission list (to weed out the crazy) and or throw a poll out on it - or just whatever everyone wants to do and have the name chosen from that list. It just is rather annoying that a name such as Xanadu was chosen without any obvious reference, so why not do a rename and let the players name it.
  12. Not sure how many followed the news announcement about a new map coming down the pipe called Xanadu but I cant help but speculate a bit. Now for those that are not familiar with Xanadu Ill give a very quick historical reference on it and provide sort of a quick reference guide in the form of a RUSH song also entitled Xanadu. Marco Polo was believed to have visited Xanadu and gave a number of descriptions concerning it [media]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16MpCza27HI&feature=player_detailpage "And when you have ridden three days from the city last mentioned ( modern Beijing), between north-east and north, you come to a city called Chandu, which was built by the Khan now reigning. There is at this place a very fine marble Palace, the rooms of which are all gilt and painted with figures of men and beasts and birds, and with a variety of trees and flowers, all executed with such exquisite art that you regard them with delight and astonishment. Round this Palace a wall is built, inclosing a compass of 16 miles, and inside the Park there are fountains and rivers and brooks, and beautiful meadows, with all kinds of wild animals (excluding such as are of ferocious nature), which the Emperor has procured and placed there to supply food for his gerfalcons and hawks," Marco Polo also mentioned a large portable palace made of gilded and lacquered cane or bamboo which could be taken apart quickly and moved from place to place. "The Lord abides at this Park of his, dwelling sometimes in the Marble Palace and sometimes in the Cane Palace for three months of the year, to wit, June, July, and August; preferring this residence because it is by no means hot; in fact it is a very cool place. When the 28th day of the Moon of August arrives he takes his departure, and the Cane Palace is taken to pieces." Now that the history and descriptions are out there time for some rampant speculation on my part. Tich said to think big, Johan says its possibly the biggest thing ever put out by WURM - So given the above Are we talking about Rivers or streams? Lands of Ice?
