  1. TL;DR Nobody liked my idea so changed my suggestion. After reading through the big mining discussion in Town Hall I decided to post my suggests here. There's a whole debate going on over there as to whether the grindyness of mining is driving new players away but my suggestion wouldn't greatly alter the grinding aspect so much as make it a more fluid and realistic process. My suggestion would be to; 1) Combine ore with rock to eliminate the polka-dot effect of veins and reduce the necessity to mine huge caverns to find small amounts of ore. 2) Add greater usefulness to Prospecting skill. On second thought leave prospecting as a way of pinpointing and determining quality. So the first change would be to blend all ores and rock together into one tile type. The tile would then contain trace amounts of the various ores. There still might be a chance that a tile contained only rock, but many would also contain 1 or more ores. Upon analyzing a tile you would receive a message like this: You find that the rock contains small traces of iron. Mining this tile would produce an 18kg piece of rock and a 2kg piece of iron ore. This would reduce the need to mine out huge caverns to find that single iron vein and instead reward every action on a tile with a bit of ore. This would also give a more intuitive indication of nearby ores. No more (blindly at low prospecting skill) chipping your way through a mountain until you find iron. You would know you were getting closer to a large deposit as each tile produced more and more iron per action. Here's the second part; mining a tile would still destroy the tile in around 50 actions. Any trace ores generated by the mining action would be capped by the Mining skill or the ore quality, whichever being lower. In order to extract only the ore you would need to reinforce the tile and use the Prospecting skill mine it. You carefully begin extracting the ore, taking care to avoid destroying the surrounding rock. Mining a reinforced tile would produce a greater amount of ore, while damaging the reinforcement. Rather than having a fixed number of ore in each vein you would be able to continue mining until the reinforcement reached 100% damage, at which point the tile would be destroyed. The amount of damage done with each action would be reduced with an increase in Mining skill, which would also increase the ql cap. Since there would be more tiles which contained ore there would not have to be as much in each tile. You might get say 250 or 500 prospect actions out of each tile, rather than between 1,000 and 10,000. With the removal of BSB decay there is no need to have a single tile last for 3 years now; just mine 500 units out of it and move along.
  2. If I had money I would definitely pay in for this idea. So: The concept is that, like leveling and flattening, the 'tunnel' action would continue indefinitely until one of these events occurred: - There's too much stuff on the ground; you can't keep mining here - You're forbidden from tunneling here (priest restrictions, gm protected tiles, deed shenanigans, whatever) - The wall breaks - The wall sends the message that it cannot be broken for x reason. - You're too hungry/thirsty to perform that action Furthermore, I'd like to add a 'tunnel,' 'tunnel up,' and 'tunnel down' option underground. Basically the same as tunneling aboveground, I'd like the mining action to continue until: - There's too much stuff on the ground - You're forbidden from mining here (priest restrictions, gm protected tiles, deed shenanigans, whatever) - This tile breaks - This tile cannot be broken for x reason (reinforced, side shafts, whatever) - You're too hungry/thirsty to perform that action I would also like a configuration option to prevent using the 'tunnel' action on ore veins. Optionally, there could also be a config option to stop tunneling when you run out of stamina ('You must rest' from the flattening/leveling actions). I would rather not have this active by default though; being out of stamina doesn't stop the default mining action after all. One more thing - I'd prefer that tunneling still give you a chance to dump gems/salt/etc on the ground, the same as mining. Thanks for your consideration!   3. Hello Wurm community. I am a fairly new player and this is my very first post in here so please bear with me. I start getting a little more involved with mining lately. I managed to get my prospecting at 35 so I can "see" ore veins 3 tiles away. This is a great step up for every miner out there. So I found so far about 4 veins of iron (different quality) and one of lead. That was very nice since it gave our starter settlement a nice boost. But then I started to roam around and I found about 10 other mines that I could explore. Now, based on wurmpedia I learned that "All ores are slightly regional. Thus, if an ore vein is located, it is likely there will be other veins of the same ore type nearby." So everything I found at any other location I checked was iron and lead. That means there is a high chance I will not be able to find any other ore in the area? We are based around Esteron. Could other people settled in the same area confirm if they found any zinc, copper, etc.? Thanks a lot. Zyraxis

  7. Would love to see the insides of mines change a bit, to better blend between plain rock and specific ore types. Could be several ways to do it, so I'll leave the thought there. Also, would like to see gem mines, rather than ore and rock mining, just randomly dropping a gem. Gems have always seemed to be overly abundant to me, but maybe because I have a love for mining. Make a diamond vein, or ruby vein, etc. Make it take a random number of actions 1-100 to get a gem. Non gem producing actions don't give rock. Veins are the same sizes are regular ore veins, but based on actions, not how many gems are pulled out. This way, people can choose to prospect for gems or veins and not have to just pray and mine nonstop for gems. Just a thought.

  22. Hey residents of Xanadu, I just recently made a thread like this on the Inde forum section and figured Xanadu might benefit from the same idea. This is a copy-paste format from the other thread, but the guidelines hold up the same. If I might add one more note or disclaimer: I am not very skilled in the art of coding, and as such making a nice map such as the community map for Xanadu will not be within my grasp. Try not to curse my name too much if I make a simple map based on the information I gather from you all, as I will do my very best to make it simple and easy to read or understand. If there is anyone out there who is much more skilled than myself and would enjoy helping with such a project I'd welcome it with open arms!
  23. Ok, many players know the mining system and some have no idea. Let me sum up how skill is rewarded for mining: complete, utter fail (1ql shard mined) = no skill gained Really poor job of mining (>1 but less than 40QL shard mined) = woot, I get mining skills!! Wow, I am doing awesome and mining really high QL shards = zero skill = big fat loser!! Where in life do we have to strive for mediocrity to get better at something? This is literally the only game I have ever seen that makes you have to use crappy tools to lower your performance/quality to get better at what you do. This is the dumbest thing I have seen. Make skill gain a result of doing something great - PLEASE - we should strive to push the limits, not see how lame we can be.

  25. Can only be done on a tile that has two perpendicular walls visible and may only be done on the right angle visible, must be stood on the cornering tile. Result is a right triangle (a=4m, b=4m, c=5.66m). May be reinforced. Takes 25 actions to mine out, reinforcement same as usual.
