  1. For those that don't know, cartography is the study and practice of making maps. If you have an area of land you want mapped out, I'm your man! With the upcoming changes to the enclosure rule, many people will be watching their undeeded sections of land quite closely. If you'd like a detailed map of this land, I can do just that for you! I can use a flat 2D program like Excel or a 3D program like the Deedplanner to map out anything you choose. Things I can map and detail for you: Deed and Perimeter Off-deed areas you use close to your village Lands that exist amongst your alliance Hunting grounds Mines you have access to Trade routes for easier travel to other villages So whether you're wanting to help out your new villagers or alliance members with a map of the local area, trying to keep an eye on the progress and changes to off-deed land you use, or would like a detailed layout of your cave systems or hunting grounds; I'm the man to hire! Since I have no precedent with this kind of hired work I wouldn't begin to know what to charge for the size and detail of a job. With that being said I have a special offer for the first 2 customers who want a map created for them (one map must be 2D and the other must be 3D). For the first 2 customers I'm willing to map an area at 1s each. After these experiences I'll have a better idea of what I'd like to charge for such a service. I'm located on Independence in the Freedom Cluster and I am willing to travel anywhere on Independence to map an area for you. I look forward to your responses and thank you in advance for any business you send my way! EDIT: A 3D map and a 2D map have both been ordered and completed, so now the price will rise based upon the project desired and can be negotiated.
  2. I'm thinking it would be nice to add a new skill in called "exploration" that has to do with maps and also (finally) a way to guess your rough position. It would be nice to pair it with tracking in some way (maybe have tracking as a subskill or the other way around?) The following changes are proposed to maps : Allowing the editing of markers (both shape and label), also whether it is visible to village/alliance. A new action with a compass, used on a deed token it creates a marker for the token on the map, grants a small amount of exploration exp. The base timer being about 5 mins, reduced by skill and compass QL. A new action with a compass, right clicking on it and using "get bearings" puts a circular overlay on the map with your rough position. The radius of the circle reduces with higher skill/compass QL. This, again, gives some skillgain. Timer for skill use starts at 2 mins (must be stood still) and is reduced by compass QL and skill level. At higher levels of exploration an additional map zoom level is unlocked (at 50 and 70?) allowing for more detailed marking.
  3. Newbies need maps to get un-lost and find their way from deed to deed. The new maps absolutely wont help with either. To get unlost, you find a deed you're in or whose perimeter you're in, locate it on a map and then you know where you are. New maps have no deeds, so no good. Oldbies will take one look, think "oh that's pretty" and go straight back to the player made maps which have all of the deeds. So... who are the new maps for, and for what are they intended to be used? Regards, Shiraek
  4. Many new updates are coming, but servers are very badly connect. I think, we have two size of servers and better places to connect them:
  5. Maps

OK so what do you think of having a craftable map i.e you get paper and a quill and "chart" the area around you (whatever distance) i was thinking field of few. and you can then move up a bit and update the map but you have to do it manually like clicking on your map and adding to it. Then you could have adventurers who go out and chart the lands and then sell there maps. and you could have skil for this cartography for example?
  6. I could be wrong but I think history has shown many players want maps with markings for roads and villages. If the new maps don't support this feature wouldn't it be like coding in a feature that is destined to be obsolete and under appreciated? Players will quickly abandoned the map and seek out ones that fulfill what it lacks. Another issue I'm concerned with is the anti-map crowd will try and use these new maps as leverage to take away the higher detailed maps. I've seen this type of thing in the past, as an example, when this group responds to complaints, "You can find your general location". They don't like maps at all and any excuse to get rid of them will be capitalized on. Despite these people's efforts we always comeback to the same thing. Should we not learn a lesson from that? ps. I love to see some unbiased poll questions. I'd end up writing something biased since I hate the anti-map crowd so much. This isn't my main point but I just have to mention it. We can make much better markings if we had a means to get player position. The ability could be severely restricted with long cooldowns. I think that is a reasonable compromise. It helps us make maps yet isn't a instant update indicator. Such an ability could easily fit in Wurm's lore if it was done with a magic item.
  7. The first one has probably been requested a lot, but here's my personal vision: A 'map' item that gives you a map GUI when used and standing still. The map is blank to begin with, but you can fill in a small area around you by using a brush on it and having dyes in your inventory (or something like that) It doesn't show your location, just a map. Mapmaking skill Second suggestion is Education. As a beginner, the only way to get your stats up right now is by practising (cutting trees, sawing planks, etc.) You could have the option to teach other players different skills. Their skill goes up, but it takes time and they need someone who is good at teaching. The lower the skill, the faster you learn. You can't get higher skill than the one who is teaching. Teaching is only useful for relatively new characters. You could work as a teacher.
  8. With the advent of papyrus I thought it would be a cool idea to add player made maps to the game. Instead of it being made with everything on it make it to where the initial map has only the server the map is made on and you personally add markers to it of where you think things are, you could add road markers, village, wl/bl(for epic players) mark your alliance villages and even enemy villages. Make it an item that doesn't cross servers and requires a Papyrusmaking skill of say 50, also require you activate a reed pen and with ink to add any marks. Would create a new market and would make getting around the server you are on a bit easier. If you absolutely wanted to you could add a moving marker for you but it isn't necessary to make this a great idea TL;DR Introduce player-made maps that: - require 50 Papyrusmaking skill to make - has only the server it is made on and is blank except for the basic land - player adds markers with a reed pen and ink of where they think things are - Doesn't cross server borders If you have a legit reason this wouldn't work I would love to hear it, if not please don't reply saying it would take away from what wurm is.
