Been playing on this server since the start, really enjoying being able to play while having a busy schedule! My homestead has really started to take shape, something which normally would've taken me over a month! Highly recommended!

So, like the title says, what has changed in the past 2 years? I thought I'd check the site again and I noticed it changed, and when I looked at the blog I saw Rolf talking about multiple level dungeons, did he finally do that? Because that might actually be a reason to try it out again!sSSSS

I doubt there's much you can do to detect it though, as I imagine there'd be loads of ways you could get the map data from the client. Also, I don't think waging a war you can't really win isn't a viable option in the case of wurm, there are other java-based games that struggle with the same issues, and they have to go to great extents to more or less stop activity that's against their rules. Even so, I've heard people do manage to get around it. To me, the most sensible option would seem to be to get rid of the need to dump the map by providing, like suggested, either an in-game map based on the cartography skill, or have a mapdump done every so many weeks, or something along those lines.

How about RSA? Wurm client picks the private key at runtime, client sends the public key to the server to use to encrypt the terrain data? Also, how would an external application call any decryption method within the client? (I'm just curious, not trying to convince anyone I know everything about this) It's possible to do so through bytecode manipulation at runtime, or running a java agent over the client. Do know that I only know how it works in theory, I do not know how to employ such techniques myself.

If I recall correctly it's nearly impossible to do due to the fact that the signal coming out of the amp is very weak. You'll need some guitar interface to do it if I'm not mistaken.

So why not implement flying cars? Require no skill to make, can be made from rock shards and a bit of dirt. 5 second combine. Can have rocket launchers installed that kill any creature in one shot, a terraforming laser, a portable BSB, FSB and coffin as storage, moves at up to 100km/h, player invulnerable while flying in it. If that would wreck the game for you, just don't make one. Cheers, Shiraek The difference here being that those "items" you mentioned are impossible to make right now, whereas it is very much possible to just dump the map at will.

Just pulling this straight out of my rear but how about slapping a 128-bit AES on the world data traffic? Then piecing together a mapdump wouldn't be as simple as just sniffing packets. Thats what I thought, why not encrypt the data in a way that any hackers would have to spend hours and hours trying to decipher it and get a map out of it. And where do you propose you safely store the AES key? It has to be sent to the client or stored in the client, and that's something else you can easily get if you know how to. Edit: Besides, the method to decrypt map data would be in the client, which a map dumper could easily call by itself.

I found Dunn to be much more likeable, simply because he kind of seemed like the loser of the bunch, getting a lot of crap from bam.

Such a shame he had to die this young, he was one of my faves from . RIP

I've played it with someone from the Wurm IRC, can't remember who. It was fun though!
