  1. So after another long session of fixes we found the problem! Or should I say problems, as there were likely a few issues present. Firstly, we did some tweaking with the 'Path' System Variable. Now we had already edited it as a part of our series of Java reinstalls, removing references to all java versions and ensuring it had only one reference; to the latest install. Along with this we changed the JAVA_HOME to the latest JDK install she had (1.8.0_66). Alas the errors continued. During this stage I neglected to have her edit (or add) her JRE_HOME variable, as it didn't exist and I didn't want to break anything. A couple of days ago we did this too. Still no different. We ran another update on the C++ binaries and we finally got the "Failed to load jvm.dll" error, which was really a relief as up until this point we didn't know what to be looking at. We edited the Path again and ensured that her Java directory was the first path in the variable. After a restart Wurm was working. This resulted in me concluding the following: * Steam never performed first time setup on the game for her, so I assume it detected the required software was already installed and correctly working. This was not the case. * The original issue was related to the C++ redistributables, I believe one was improperly installed or misconfigured and reinstalls from the files downloaded with the game did not work. This was fixed by downloading the updated redistributables (Step 1). * At this point the JRE_Home variable and the Path variable seem to have created issues. We had the exact "working" setup before, but discarded it as it didn't seem to work. (Due to the launcher not even start or setting up correctly?) This caused us to discard the JRE_HOME variable. Running the game with just updated binaries and the Path variable set did not work. * Reimplementing the JRE_HOME variable combined with the priority in Path and Updated Binaries resulted in the game working. The game would not run at all until all three of these fixes in place and it took a while to hit the right combination. If anyone else is still having the issue run through the following steps: 1. (IF when enabling debug=1 in the launcher config file, you do not have any console (black window) pop up when launching WU, follow this step. If you're just getting the "Failed to load jvm.dll" error, skip to 2) Head over to Microsoft's website (http://www.microsoft.com/) and download the latest 2010, 2012 and 2013 Visual C++ redistributables and install them onto your system. 2. Ensure you have a recent java install, navigate to C:\Program Files\Java, find your java JRE folder and copy the directory (For example: C:\Programs Files\Java\jre1.8.0_66) (Important to note JRE, not JDK) Open your start menu, right click 'Computer' and click on properties. Click on Advanced System Settings. Navigate to the Advanced tab and click on Environment Variables. Check for a "JRE_HOME" (Case doesn't matter) variable under System Variables, if one does not exist create it. Edit "JRE_HOME" and set the value to your JRE folder, then press ok. (The directory you copied earlier) Next locate the "Path" (Case doesn't matter) System (not user) Variable and edit it. Paste in your directory at the start of the 'value' box, add \bin; to the end. (It should look something like C:\Programs Files\Java\jre1.8.0_66\bin;next\path\etc) Press ok and close out of the dialogues. Once you've followed both steps, close out of the properties and restart your computer. Try launching WU and hopefully it'll work.
  2. Editing won't really reset what you don't edit out and the databases are specific to the game instances (Eg Creative, Adventure, any copies are all different instances) If you're getting the no known kingdom error etc in creative you may have unchecked 'home server' or used an invalid kingdom id. The creative server is, by default, a freedom isles (id 4 I believe) home server and enabling other kingdoms or disabling them all together can be glitchy, I think because they need a spawn location to be a valid kingdom in a non-home-server and by default creative is empty. If your creative server is bugged out and setting it back to freedom home doesn't work you may have to run the database reset scripts or manually clean them. Creative and Adventure both have different instances, so tampering with one won't really affect the other, I'd recommend a backup system for both regardless just so that if something breaks or you want to test something out you have a recent copy to go back to. Hope everything ends up working for you.
  3. Glad to hear you found your solution!
  4. The cause of this would likely be due to you being unable to connect to the steam server that handles the server-list. Possible causes would be a firewall, router or some other fault or block that's preventing you from reaching those servers. Have you got steam open and running in online mode? Have you got a filter on at all (Perhaps antivirus software)?
  5. This sounds like the Kingdom bugs, "no known area" isn't really meant to occur and the guards are killing your dog because they consider it an enemy. In adventure mode there are meant to be three (or four?) predefined kingdoms, Jenn-Kellon, Mol Rehan and Horde of the Summoned. (Possibly freedom too? Haven't checked but I've seen boars aligned with freedom) The Kingdoms are all enemies and locked in feuds, hence any outsiders are considered enemies. You can reset your databases by going to your server folder in steam (either 'Wurm Unlimited Dedicated Server' if you're using dedicated, or 'Wurm Unlimited/WurmServerLauncher' if you aren't), in there you should see an 'Adventure' folder and within it 'sqlite'. The sqlite folder contains your databases and some batch scripts. I'd recommend always backing up before tampering with this folder. rebuild-dbs.bat will delete and reset all the databases, effectively resetting everything like kingdoms, players, mobs, items, but if I'm correct changes to the world (such as terraforming) should still be there, stored in the map. This will reset your character. There are ways to work around a complete reset but it requires some database editing and I'm not entirely sure what needs to be done to fix the kingdom areas. You'd need a program like SQLite Browser (http://sqlitebrowser.org/) to be able to open the databases and edit them. If I recall there are some video tutorials on it by cmiddlebrook here: http://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/133062-tutorial-how-to-install-custom-maps-clean-your-database/ (Keep in mind though the tutorial instructs you on how to wipe the databases) I'd recommend maybe backing up and rebuilding your databases first, start a new character and see if you can get far enough that you don't need your old one anyway, definitely join a kingdom as it makes things easier when at least one side doesn't want your head on a platter. ;P As for the bartender bug I've heard of it talked about before on steam discussions, not familiar with it though sorry. 'Deeds' are like land rights in this game, you could think of them as villages but that's not all they're used for. By default settings Deeds in Adventure mode have no cost and require no upkeep so you can found one by using your deed stake and you can hire guards (for free) to protect it. Money is a somewhat complicated issue. In Wurm Online there are 3 major ways to obtain money, these include trading with players, buying from the online store and playing the trader system. Since you are solo on your own server the first two are out of the question. You should be able to find a trader in the starter town for your kingdom somewhere, you can sell them items in exchange for money, but be careful, as traders can be 'broken' in the sense that you'll need to always buy back a portion of what you sell or the trader won't continue making as much money. Read more here: http://www.wurmpedia.com/index.php/Trader There are of course some new ways to make money in the sense you can find coins while foraging etc, but the amounts are so small that I'd recommend learning the trade system instead if you want to make some coin. Sorry for the wall of text, hope this helps though.
  6. Her games are in the default Steam directory, C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common, her account does have admin rights and she doesn't have any partitions or external hard drives etc. I'll have to check with her if she was running Steam as Administrator. If she wasn't we'll try reinstalling with admin to see if it works. We can assume it's not an issue with the Java version then, we ran through a couple too, best to be sure though so thanks for confirming it
  7. This sounds like a bug to me, are you in any Kingdom and which mode are you playing? And what does it tell you if you use "/reputation"? As far as I know so long as you're killing animals away from any Deeds you should be able to have full loot access to them. This sounds like something has gone wrong within the server and you may need to reset the database. Another thing to note is are you in any kingdom territory? (A message should pop up in events tab saying "You enter Jenn-Kellon", "You enter Mol Rehan" or "You enter Horde of the Summoned" if you are) This could possibly be caused by selecting no kingdom in adventure mode, I have friends who have had similar issues from it.
  8. What are your system specs like and could it be possible you're running out of memory for Java? The consistency of the error so early in playtime sounds like it may be eating up all the available memory when the world is being loaded in. Do other java applications/games perform similarly?
  9. From what we've experimented it's not system security settings, but I'm going to get her to try changing her java security settings perhaps. Are there any other Java apps you have problems running? Since I know it the past she's had issues with the Wurm Online client and Project Zomboid, having fixed them however by updating Java. I'm curious though, what java version are you running? It's a shot in the dark, but a lot of the people having these issues seem to have 1.8.0_66 (arguably because it's recent and they are more responsible than I and keep Java updated), I myself am running fine on windows, however I am lazily using 1.8.0_60 (Haven't updated yet) I'll try and get a hold of a dev to see if they have any ideas on the issue. I noticed in your other thread you were getting the "Failed to load jvm.dll" error, I'm not sure if my friend is getting the same though as the times the console opens it closes instantly and we don't get the chance to read any errors (in the rare instances they load in in time). I'm going to treat the issue as separate to the similar occurrences that have been solved with the fixes we've all tried. I'm starting to clump together some information on the issue that we can hopefully find in common: * The issue seems to occur on a variety of Windows Systems with different causes * Your issue is definitely related (possibly the same since no fixes worked for you either) * This issue seems to occur primarily on Windows 7 64 bit * Updating C++ redistributables and Java seem to have no effect * The JVM does not seem to launch at all * The JVM does not seem to be failing to launch due to memory issues Now, I'm going to make a comparison with my friend, since I have a very similar system to hers but run wurm perfectly well. * I'm using Windows 7 64 bit home premium (Doubtful that this could be the cause) * I'm running a slightly outdated version of Java and have multiple older versions on my System * I have 16GB of RAM compared to her 8GB * She has an intel i7 CPU while I have an AMD (8-core) * I never experience any issues with Java applications while she does on occasion * Her Java has acted up on occasion (An example is that sometimes eclipse cannot recognize her installation) * Both of us are able to run most java programs perfectly fine * My graphics card is an AMD R9 270x, she has an AMD HD 5700 The other detail to mention is that she recently tried the Wurm Online launcher and it worked perfectly fine. The fact that Java is consistently working for everything else for her means I'm leaning towards the Wurm Unlimited Launcher being the problem rather than the JVM. Perhaps there is some form of incompatibility with one of the libraries used? I'd be interested to know if there are any other programs you've had similar issues with (Java or not). So far I've been unable to draw any connections between similar crashes she has had except Java. Hopefully we can do some more sleuthing and get this all figured out soon. Good luck. Edit: Something I neglected to mention but should have thought to is that her issues in the past were with LWJGL games. This may be coincidence though as I doubt LWJGL would be initialized in the launcher and she'd instead be crashing at the game. Plus we've worked on small LWJGL games together before and she's never had issues with compiling or running them. Hopefully some developers can enlighten us on what exactly the launcher does and what it initializes that may be causing the crash.
  10. Try editing the JavaPath in your LaunchConfig.ini, get the directory of the JRE you wish to use (there is one included in Wurm Unlimited in the runtime folder if you wanted to try it too) and navigate to bin/server. Copy the Address of the directory and paste it into the JavaPath, be sure to also set OverrideJavaRegEntry to true. Your LaunchConfig should look something like this: [Runtime] OverrideJavaRegEntry=true JavaPath=C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_60\bin\server Hope this helps.
  11. java.lang.Throwable: Could not start SteamApi Shutting down (Steam is not Running) This is a Throwable (Used by Java to 'throw an error') from the SteamAPI it would seem. The error is pretty self-explanatory, Steam is not running. Wurm Unlimited uses Steam for the server list, client to server connection and (probably) ownership verification iirc, hence it needs Steam to be running in the background. I'm guessing that when you restarted Steam was either launched by you or launched in the background, hence it works again. Posting just for reference in case someone else has the same error.
  12. Just got her to clear out the registry, unfortunately the problem is still persisting. My suspicions are still leaning towards possible launcher incompatibility, thank you for the help though. Any other registry keys I should have her check up on?
  13. Alright, she's currently busy but that's the next step we'll take. Thanks for the suggestion, I should have thought of it myself as I've had to help her clean the registry in the past and we were manually editing keys to ensure java uninstalled correctly. I'll get back to you on if it works.
  14. EDIT: Resolved! See my latest post for details. Original post: Hello, I'm posting this on behalf of a friend who preordered WU with me. I have had no issues playing the game however when she tried launching it for the first time this weekend the launching dialogue appeared briefly but nothing else seemed to happen. We've spent numerous hours (around 10 at this point) running through various fixes and searching up similar problems. There seems to be plenty of instances of this reported on the Steam Technical Issues Discussion also without resolve. To briefly detail her relevant system information: OS: Windows 7 64 bit Java: 1.8.0_66 64-Bit Server VM Graphics: AMD HD 5700 Processor: Intel core i7 870 @ 2.93GHz RAM: 8GB Testing and fixes were conducted with no Anti-Virus software (or anything else that should interfere) running. This may be a bit of a big read so I do apologize beforehand to anyone who has to sift through this. First thing we tried was verifying integrity of game cache of the client, using the regular steam process, when this failed she reinstalled completely. Next we tried updating her Java and uninstalling ALL the older version she had completely (A couple of ancient Java 6 and 7 instances required use of Microsoft troublefixing tools to remove). I ensured that the only version of Java she had was Java 8u66 JRE 64 Bit. The game still failed to launch. At this point we restarted her computer. At this point we turned to various settings fixes listed in the steam discussion. I won't go through all of the combinations we used, as we mix-and-matched practically all these settings. The Wurm launcher settings we tried were: Debug mode = 1 for error logs, (none were or have been printed to the wurm unlimited directories) Changing the initial and maximum heap sizes, tried various sizes (2 to the power of n) from 512MB - 4GB (max heap) and 256MB - 2GB (initial) Setting JavaPath (and enabling OverrideDefaultJavaPath) to: The server folder in her JRE, and after that failed the server folder within the JRE within WU's runtime folder. Removing -XX:+OptimizeStringConcat (and correctly indexing the parameters) Adding the parameter -Dglass.accessible.force=false During this stage we also installed the dedicated server to test it, it had exactly the same issue. We restarted again here. When these failed and still not logs occurred I started to suspect the Redistributables and perhaps a faulty install. At this point my friend tried running Wurm on another computer (one she borrowed to test it on, we can't use it for her to play sadly), the launcher worked fine. I had her check the Java version of the computer and turns out it didn't have Java installed. This time we tried removing all Java instances (and environment variables) from her computer, hoping the game would use the default JRE. The same issue resumed so at this point I eliminated Java from my suspicions, we reinstalled Java 1.8.0_66. Just to be sure, another restart. Again my suspicions turned to the Redistributables, so I had her reinstall all of them and use the Microsoft repair utilities and updates to ensure they were all up to date and working. Unfortunately, again, the issue persisted. Another restart. This time, just for an experimental fix, we updated her Graphics drivers and restarted again, just to eliminate that possible angle. Alas, the issue still persists. Again sorry for the wall of text and sorry if I've missed something out or forgotten an important detail. The same issue is still persisting and we aren't getting any crashes, error logs, error messages or anything. The console appears briefly sometimes after launch but nothing seems to happen. I am almost certain this issue is related to the launcher and some sort of incompatibility, however no-one else with the issue has posted much information about their system (definitely nothing relative to my friend's computer) Native windows programs are not really my area and I can't really think up any other possible causes so I'm not sure I can really work through on this problem any more. If it keeps persisting we may just have to wait for the Mac version so she can play on her laptop. If anyone has any suggestions, information or fixes they want to recommend it would be much appreciated. Similarly if anyone would like any more specific information (such as software versions etc) we'd be glad to help out in any way to get further into this problem. Thanks again for wading through this wall of text, really hope we can all work this out soon
