  1. Thanks for the replies. I think I've got it resolved now. I mined East from Q 2 tiles, then South to 2 tiles past T, then West, always mining down. Ran out of time, but I'm now finding traces of zinc which hopefully will lead me to the vein.
  2. Thanks! A is a surface tile. B is entrance. Can't go directly south from them because that's down hill. That's why my tunnel curved to the north. Edit: A is almost flat rock. East of A is almost flat dirt. Edit3: I also realize now I should have been mining down most of the way.
  3. Grr! Stuck again. Here's what I did in alphabetical order: M N O J K L P Q H I R G S F E D C B A T North is top of "drawing." Hill is sloped up from South to North. Prospecting skill is 20.51. A=surface tile, prospecting says zinc nearby. B=Tunnel entrance. It also said zinc nearby. C-E=Got a warning trying to mine north I=Got a "dangerous shaft message" trying to go East L=ditto (Edit: Oops. I was looking down mapping this and forgot that I tried to go South from L and it opened a steep shaft upward to C.) S=Mined down after "unstable...dirt" message T=Get the "unstable ... dirt" message even when mining down. Analyzed every wall and none of them show zinc. My best guess is that the zinc is probably south of A-B. (Edit: Can't be done: Should I try mining down and south from L) Suggestions?
  4. Ah, I didn't realize that's how the veins were shaped. Thanks!
  5. I've been looking for zinc. Using surface prospecting, I've found where some should be. One more or less flat tile says there is some near. The angled tile to the west says the same. I've tunneled in the west tile and mined one more tile to the west. I then got my prospecting up to 20.01 and took a sample of all 3 walls, none of which showed traces of anything. I assume that means the zinc must be somewhere behind and below me. Any suggestions on the best way I can find the vein?
  6. Log is pretty clear. Despite being wee hours of the morning, I remembered correctly. I got 3 pottery bowls, started cooking. Got 2 sauce pans, started cooking. That's all the bowls and pans I have. Nothing else is "dropped." After cooking, 18 minutes later, I picked them up from the oven and only 1 of the bowls would fit in the chest.
  7. This morning, like every other morning for the past few days, I got up, got my bowls and pans out of my large chest, cooked breakfast, and tried to put the empty bowls and pans back in my chest. Unlike every other morning, only 1 of the 5 items would fit. I removed a huge club from the chest and still couldn't put them in. After swapping several items around, I was finally able to remove 3 small buckets and put my cooking items in the chest. I've been doing this every day for 2-3 weeks and nothing new has been put in the chest. Online CA said large chests were limited by volume and pottery bowls had a very high volume compared to other items. Is there a way I can find out what the volumes of the items are? And why could I remove the items and a few minutes later not be able to put them back in?
  8. Thanks! But how is a newbie supposed to know that? (Edit: That's one of the reasons I said creating a new character doesn't simulate new player experience.) In fact, the wiki says "You can get better fish in deeper water" which implies the deeper the better. Anyway, "my" bay has about a 2-4 tile area that shallow. I'll try it there. All the other banks are pretty steep. I've drowned swimming across it to escape a troll and didn't have enough stamina to climb any bank. Heh. Thanks again!
  9. Newbie here so I can't compare it to the old system. BE asked about a newbie's experience, so I thought I'd chime in. After reading the thread, it might do well to remember that creating a new character does not simulate a new player's experience. I rarely get cotton when foraging and when I did, I wanted it to make a bow string (archery's been another disappointment but that's another story). When I think fishing, I think pole, line, hook, bait; so that is what I made. My free food time was running out and tutorials suggested fishing as a way to feed myself. Making everything took a long time and finding a wurm took even longer. After a few attempts with no success and losing my wurm, I decided the "optional" float must not really be optional. I got lucky (didn't realize it at the time) and found a twig near where I was fishing. Again, it took a very long time to find another wurm. Finally hooked a fish but it got away. On the third one hooked, my hook broke. I was getting pretty frustrated (those who read my other post know I had other things to be frustrated about). Back to town, made a bunch of hooks. Hooked a few more but they all got away and then lost hook and twig. Looked for a very long time and could not find a twig. I did find a worm but it rotted before I found a twig. Gave up fishing in disgust. You can't say I didn't try for I got my skill up to 8 and never caught a thing. After I got my deed, I happened to see something about using a net so I made one. Admittedly, I've only tried it 3 or 4 times but still no success. I could see the fish swimming and cast my net right where they were but caught nothing. I certainly wouldn't recommend fishing as a way for newbies to feed themselves.
  10. The Cookbook known recipe for "Stew (meat)" only works in a sauce pan, not a pottery bowl, although the recipe lists pottery bowl as a container. The listed ingredients make a more difficult "breakfast" if in a pottery bowl.
  11. Thanks, BE. I'm not sure how to tell if my laptop has switchable graphics. "lspci | grep VGA" only shows "VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Kaveri [Radeon R5 Graphics]" so I assumed that means it is the only video graphics. (Edit) It is a Dell Inspiron 15 5545 and the manual for it says Video Controller: Integrated • AMD A8-7100 APU with AMD Radeon R5 Graphics • AMD A10-7300 APU with AMD Radeon R6 Graphics Discrete AMD Radeon R7 M265 Graphics Memory: Integrated Shared system memory Discrete 2 GB DDR3 When I said it runs fine with other games, I just meant playable, not stellar by any stretch. (Edit) So, it looks like I need some way to switch from the Integrated to the Discrete? (/Edit) The other 3D games I play are fairly old so I haven't noticed. I'll investigate some more and see if I can figure out what I need to do. Thanks again!
  12. @Ekcin: Thanks for the feedback. Just a few points: "I disagree, though, that nothing aggressive should spawn around newcomer locations." Actually, you misquoted me. The rest of the sentence: "...that the newcomer cannot kill." Not necessarily even on first attempt. But no matter how many times I resurrected I probably could not have killed that Hell Hound. I wish there were a few rats (supposedly these exist in the game; I've never seen one) and wolves around HL. As for the guards, I didn't know about "help" and actually did lead it to the guards and wondered why they just stood there and watched me die. Heh, I can laugh about it now, but it was extremely frustrating at the time. I wasn't aware that rares could happen while selling. That's good to know. But I've sold quite a few flowers (usually give more than 1 iron) and not gotten any. I have gotten a few rare coins while foraging, even a silver once. As for crafting, I've gotten rare kindling and a rare stone shard. Woohoo! I guess I see it as expensive because it only applies to a single char. I'd like to have a char specialized in fighting, one in cooking, one in blacksmithing, etc. A jack of all trades, master of none, is kind of boring. Allow 4 chars and I'll agree that the subscription is reasonable.
  13. I'm necroing this because that makes more sense than starting a new thread. I just tried Wurm on my laptop that has AMD/ATI and I also only get about 4 FPS. That laptop runs other games just fine. I'm running Devuan, a Debian derivative, latest version.
  14. I'm a new player (about 3 weeks or so) and, quite frankly, I didn't like the game at first. For that matter, I'm still not sure whether I like it or not. Click and wait 10-20s, repeat, repeat, repeat. Can't even queue things up because the loss of stamina makes the 2nd and 3rd attempts take 2-3x as long. Then, the first time I left the training area, I was killed by a Hell Hound while still in town. I didn't know the name of the starter town and ended up resurrecting in The Howl. I went online to figure out where I was and where my corpse was. I died on the way but had nothing left to lose and resurrected in HL. The Hell Hound was camping my body so I logged off in disgust and didn't plan to play again. However, there were some things I did like (more or less in order): (1) runs natively in Linux, (2) skills increase with use, (3) can make progress even if you only have a few minutes to play, (4) persistent accomplishments, and (5) no hyperinflation. So I decided to give it another chance. I suppose advertising will help some, but if the initial experience is not fun, people aren't going to stay. It seems like the attitude here is to make the initial experience as difficult as possible so those who stay won't complain about the grind later on. Remember the old saying about first impressions. My (1) above is the main reason I decided to try again but that will apply to very few people. My suggestions for improving that initial experience would be (again, more or less in order): (1) Nothing aggressive should spawn or visit a starter town that a new character cannot kill. However, there should be some rats, chickens, or something that they can kill. I like the Elder Scrolls games where there are guards patrolling the main highways and towns are completely safe--enter the wilderness at your own risk. I like the old Asheron's Call model where spawns got progressively harder as you moved away from town. I still haven't found anything other than cows and chickens that I can kill on the first attempt and often run into instant death spawns while looking for cows or chickens. (2) I think the initial 24 hr skill bonus should either reduce time taken as well or negate much of the stamina penalty. This is still the main thing I don't like about the game--that queuing something 3 times takes many times longer than doing the task 3 times waiting for stamina to return. An option to automatically rest until stamina has recovered between attempts would be enough to make me like this game much more. (3) I don't know what the solution is, but there needs to be some way for lower skilled players to make money. I have yet to find a vendor that will buy anything I can make. Selling to a token is ridiculously time consuming. There's already a per hour limit, why not let me sell it all at once? Fear of abuse? Anti-macroing? I understand. Then make the time spent and/or amount limit inversely related to time online (Edit: time spent directly related, IOW, if you're online for a long time, it takes longer to sell. I probably need to think about the amount limit but the idea was if a person was online for a very long time, the limit should be more restrictive.). If I only have a few minutes to play, I don't want to spend it on 3+s per iron at a token. That's my 2c worth from a total newbie's perspective. As for some of the other suggestions, I have wondered if there could be more than just f2p and premium. I do think that the game is too expensive for a niche game. I like the DDO model with 3 levels, f2p, Premium, and VIP. Their VIP is more or less equivalent to Wurm's Premium. Their Premium kicks in if you spend any real money on the game at all. So, even something as simple as--if you buy anything at the store, the 20 skill limit is removed--might help. Or, bump the limit up by 10 for every purchase?
  15. Thanks, everyone! Didn't mean to hi-jack the thread with my "personal" problems. But if I'm correct about the following, it might be worth changing as well for new players. I didn't experiment with it, but the default on the drop-down is "Start" (which starts out collapsed), which I assume is what sent me to The Howl. I could be wrong about that being the destination, but I don't remember having a choice--didn't even notice it was a drop-down. Send me back to "Start" seems logical.
  16. Total newbie here and I, too, was confused about "dirt" digging. Found a place in the training forest that was bare dirt and was able to dig there. But the real disappointment was after all the time figuring out how to make a small anvil and finally doing it, exploring around town I was killed by a Hell Hound (too encumbered to outrun it), and respawned in The Howl. Seriously doubt I'll be able to make it back to my corpse and get my stuff. That's a pretty heavy blow for someone just starting out.
