  13. Twenty-eight hours left. Top bid still five silvers.
  14. I feel your pain. Unfortunately, the only way to get rid of that annoying sword flickering across your screen as you move is to turn off animations entirely.
  15. Penning Feedback

The point of a "barn" is that it turns off AI and animation for animals. The AI reduces the load on a server, making an animal no different than a meal in a bucket. The animation (and model rendering) reduces the load on a client, because you don't have to render a field full of animals. Arguing the database access is just playing with the strawman because the animal data in the database is not changing for either situation. The suggestion is about reducing server load and especially client load.

You missed the point. Wurm is a 10 year old game running on a 10 year old engine. It is just not optimized. It also does not have "current date graphics". Saying that Wurm should require the same level of computer as a brand new "Crisis 3" FPS is just silly. MMOs by definition market to the masses, not just the bleeding edge computer builders. You're also missing the point of my post, which was that since Wurm is not optimized and since removing the herds will upset people, we need an alternative that lets these players keep their animals and still lets the normal player go about their business. I personally see two options: Create a solution where the herds are not being rendered to everyone (such as the barn), or optimize Wurm and it's animations. Since the former seems like a lot less work than the latter and so more likely to happen in the immediate future, that's what I'm rooting for. I don't mean that the barn should turn all horses into a generic "Horses, brown". After all, a chest will hold items, keep them unique, and does not render all those items out for people in the area. The barn can simply be a container that holds the animals. The database knows where they are located and the server knows to ignore them for AI updates, worrying only about things like age and birthing. (Or maybe the whole barn would get updated at once. That's for people who know the server code to figure out what's best for.) Considering that the UI can already show me a model of myself and rotate it, opening a window that shows me any horse or cow in my barn so I can look at how pretty it is shouldn't be too much different. Hopefully, they can even animate it. There will need to be a BSB/FSB type thing attached that only holds things that horses and cows eat. You would still have to keep them fed, but it makes a lot more sense to be able to put them into something like that than just a "trough" that is a regular container because a lot of plant items decay fast. (Plus as I understand it, the point of BSBs was they helped solve issues with large piles.)
  17. Penning Feedback

Personally, I have had to keep animations off since Wurm 1.0 came out. Even months before that, I often had problems with FPS after visiting a local breeder. This is not a computer problem as I can run a game like Portal 2 or World of Warcraft pretty well maxed out with no problems. I agree that the ultimate problem may not be the herds, but the Wurm client itself, but as we have what we have, something may need to be done about big herds. The ownership of animals is a very contentious subject. Any changes are going to upset a lot of people, so please be very careful before doing any coding on this. I still suggest the idea of a "barn" structure that holds animals for breeders. If the interface allows them to view the animals in full 3D (which certainly should be possible from a technology standpoint), and to do all the normal animal stuff like grooming and breeding, then those who want massive herds could keep them without destroying the FPS of their neighbors. A simple limit to how many horses/cows you can remove per hour (unless you put some back in first) would help keep someone from breeding a ton and then releasing them all at once. There would be the extra player work of having to load crops and such into a "food box" type FSB attached to the barn, which might necessitate the creation of a "hay bale" type item or maybe the ability to harvest from enchanted grass some kind of food stronger than mixed grass. Who knows, it might even lead to reduced overall service load from fewer animals out in the world. Heck, you could even encourage this by doing things like making animals less like to get diseased in a barn, more likely to produce better milk, or provide some other advantage to using the barn for your herds.
  18. When planting hedges, you cannot plant a hedge between two tiles of enchanted grass nor between enchanted grass and any kind of pavement. Apparently, the server thinks of enchanted grass the same was as it does pavement and does not let you plant hedges. You can plant between enchanted grass tiles and enchanted trees, regular trees, or regular grass, as well as between all three of those and pavement. So, the enchanted grass thing makes no sense.
  19. No, you folks are cut off from the original Freedom cluster. The mail spirits lack maps or something.
  20. Don't miss our rare grooming brush auction this week. />http://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/77888-rare-grooming-brush-coc-82-woa-79-ql-92/
  21. Are your animals feeling blue? Well wipe those blues away with this rare oakenwood grooming brush! This wooden brush is used to groom animals. Its wooden handle is lined with lots of thin, strong wemp straws. This is a very rare and interesting version of the item. It is made from oakenwood. It could be improved with a log. (QL 92.30) Circle of Cunning has been cast on it, so it will increase skill gained with it when used. [82] Wind of ages has been cast on it, so it will be quicker to use. [79] Starting bid: 4s Minimum increment: 0.5s No reserve. Buyout: 15s Half hour sniper protection. Auction ends Sunday, March 24th at 10:00 PM Mountain (GMT -7:00). Can be CODed to original Freedom cluster.
  22. If you plant the BSB/FSB and sell the copper key copies, it's fairly safe. The player can take the lock with them or you use the original you kept to remove the lock and throw it away. The BSB/FSB has to be off deed so people can pick stuff up. Planting it should keep the buyer from taking the empty BSB/FSB.
