  1. I'm surprised they don't want to abolish the current set of cardinal directions in favour of Hubwards, Rimwards, Turnwise and Widdershins, as in Discworld.
  2. I love the bit where they say that Antarctica doesn't exist. Maybe James Cook just bumped into the ice wall back in 1763. Sorry for the derail. Norad, I think this deserves its own thread. Do us proud, old son!
  3. DF was in the PCGamer Top 100 this year too, along with a certain game that shall remain nameless...
  4. It looks pretty apocalyptic down there. Hope any Wurmians in the area and their families are safe.
  5. I only just saw this thread and can say I'm very disappointed indeed. Filthy liberals. -MadTrollaby
  6. Just... wow. I guess that's the effect of rapid rain on moist ground.
  7. What recently, or on Monday? I heard 100mm in 60 for Monday. Which doesn't sound like enough for the effect it had. 20 years ago when I was in high school I remember 900mm in three hours... that's more the magnitude I would have expected.
  8. Yeah, there's a nice low developing out in the Coral Sea. Now that the ground's saturated all around the state, a cyclone is gonna pwn us hard, since any rain that falls will become run-off almost immediately. I do wonder how much of the floodwater makes it into the Murray-Darling system though. Maybe a good flush for a sick river system will be the proverbial silver lining? But yeah, this is going to kick our food supply right in the goolies. Maybe we all need to start our Victory Gardens again. (That'll give Gerry what-for.)
  9. The threat to the Queensland Capital, Brisbane, has passed for the moment. The river peaked on Thursday morning a bit lower than the 1974 flood level, which was a relief to many... but of course the devastation is substantial. Brisbane has a much higher population, and population density, than 37 years ago. I heard our former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd (whose electorate is here in Brissie) estimate that the flooding across Queensland affects an area that contributes about 20% of the Australian economy. Bear in mind that there are some places that started to flood a few weeks back, as Saddist originally posted. A couple of places have actually had two "Once in a Hundred Years" flood events within the space of a couple of weeks. I heard one guy in that position say, "That's it. I'm knocking the place down and building it entirely in brick, rendering it and doing tile all throughout. Then when it floods again I just hose the ****ing thing out." And on that note... do we have any Brazilian players? The flooding there has caused much greater loss of life...
  10. I've been watching the Queensland Police Service twitter feed... they've just posted that Wyvenhoe isn't close to collapse, and that Energex will be shutting down power as sparingly as they can. #QPSMedia
  11. It should be noted that the deathtoll stats here are only for the flash flooding in Toowoomba overnight. There were, to my understanding, another 10 fatalities up north over the last two weeks.
  12. Whaddayaknow. I was born in Rocky, raised in Yeppoon. I remember the '91 flood well, and this time around has a feeling of deja vu... I'm surprised anyone lives willingly in Depot Hill or Lakes Creek after what happened 20 years ago. I guess it's a simple matter of economics... they can't afford anything else. I live in Brisbane now, and it looks like there's a decent amount of water heading towards us as I type... I'm looking forward to heading home early today to finish my work day there and keep an eye on things. My family isn't likely to be directly/badly affected but still, it's getting a bit un-nice. Just hoping the roads aren't cut on the way home. -MW
