  1. Yes, absolutely. There are no requirements. The idea is to gift and be gifted, get in the Christmas spirit. Someone may put inside a 90ql tool, someone else may just put a flower. As long as both gifts are made from the whole heart, they are equally valuable. It's an event for everyone - new or old, free or prrmium, Stark or Lanister. PS: I really hope our hed of entertaining will pair vets with new players though, so the vsluable gifts get to those who need and would appreciate them most.
  2. Yeah... greatest way to keep a new, casual player entertained of game... tell him to spend his first days as premium making and shooting arrows... two skills he will most likely never really need as a freedomer. Just let them enjoy the premium perks while doing the fun things for a new player - build a house, etc. And once for all get it that it is not about me... I will be 21 in a day or two without even grinding... long before this suggestion would be considered (or even read) by a DEV. I just think at the casual players. I tried to bring some RL friends in WURM, none of them "gamers", just people who casually play games now and then... dunno maybe 10-15 hours per week. All premiumed. And yet I failed to make any of them to stay... as soon as they understood how thing go, they all said "sorry, alex, this requires too much time"... That's the goal of my suggestion(s) - make the game more acceasible for the casual player. Agains it is NOT about me.
  3. Idea: Lower skill requirements for bashing/destroying and riding from 21 BS, respectively BC down to 20.10 (still requiring premium!) Reason: On my newest character I have now 100 hours of played /time and neither my BC or my BS is at 21 yet (they are at 20.87, respectively 20.84). Now is true I haven't grind them, but I haven't waste the time either and did quite a bit of mining, digging, farming, carpentry, smithing. Also had and like 8 hours of SB, never died and pretty much never AFKed. Now the truth is that a new comer, casual player, not summing even my 100 hours in his first month of premium, would probably not reach these stats either. I'm quite sure devs can actually check if the average Joe gets to get to these stats by the end of his first month of premium time. And without even getting to experiment these nice incentives I think that he may just not be tempted to buy a second month. Not to mention the case he gives up earlier. Just make it 20.10 (like ML requirement for driving a large cart) so you show them how cool it is to be premium, as soon as they subscribe. Cheers, Alex
  4. @Whisp: although it would be nice to gather as many as possible on the event itself, I'm quite sure (like 99.99%) that you'll still find your gifts when you come back from your RL holidays.
  5. Three reasons... 1. I already have quite a nice setup on freedom server (invested like 100 euros in my deed on here) and there is no way that if I would try to sell I would recover the money I spent (I know that from all my previous sold outs - in all cases I ended up hardly getting even 50% of what I had spent in the first place; and that is true for most any other auctions I saw out there). 2. I already made myself quite a lot of enemies probably in all three kingdoms with my posts here on forum, so it's a very high chance that no matter where I would settle, I would be grieved and attacked. And yeah, I could just create a new account and run incognito, but it's not my style - although I had five different characters, I never tried to hide that it's still me. 3. I am still too much into the terraforming and building idea to be really comfortable with the idea that, although unlikely, I may just login in a morning to see my whole deed destroyed (even by a rare raid or by one of that epic cataclysms). But what I can say for sure, is that after what I've read these few days, I have much more respect for epic than I ever thought I could have.
  6. 1.1. WURM players are friendly with very new players - answering questions, even giving away some free basic tools, armors, etc. That's what I seen when I first joined the game and for that I was grateful (and I still am to a few people that helped me with hints at that time, not practical items because I never took any from anyone). 1.2. Personally, I suspect that, in case of many (or course not all!), the reason for this is mainly the fact that they imagine turning these new player in free or low paid slaves working for them - and trust me, it's not just a speculation, I saw quite a lot of times people getting a new player under their protection, help them with some basic things, take them to their deed, then just turn them in brick and mortar making slaves 'till they were eventually worn out and quit the game. 1.3. I also suspect that another large category of people (of course again not all!) are friendly with new players, just because they look for fans... fans to cheer for their "amazing accomplishments" - I really haven't seen any other game, except maybe WoW, where people demanded so many bragging rights for their accomplishments. And in order to show this, here's just an example; can you show me any other game where people feel the need of public recognition so much that they run to post on forums every time they do a kill (not to mention if they kill a champion - then they make own threads for that). 1.4. Of course, there remains a small minority of truly nice people, who have no hidden agenda, and are just naturally nice. 2.1. The true proportion of really nice people, without any personal interest (direct or indirect) can be easily saw once the new player is no longer so new and she somehow becomes a threatening to the supremacy of the "old veterans". 2.2. And if the not-so-new player now dares to question the "old ways" and come with suggestions that she things would make WURM a better game, then you can see hell unleashing and people showing their true face - elitists holding with both their hands and teeths of their privileges and rage attacking any proposal that would lead to a game change that would make it easier for new and / or casual players. 2.3. This post of mine was a perfect example for that. It was a suggestion. Probably not a good one. I can admit that. But instead of coming with arguments or just ignore the thread, a lot of people reacted aggressively and got down to ad-hominem attacks. 3.1. So yeah, I'm resentful to old players, but the reason that made me have these feelings was their reaction towards me on forums and in game (but mostly on forums) from my very first days here. 3.2. There were really hundreds of personal attacks that I reported and that were deleted (probably not followed by a ban or warning, but at least deleted) and many others which I didn't even bothered to report. Also really hundreds of in-game support tickets I made and which in most cases GMs agreed that they were "not nice remarks" at best. Which means that they were probably doing something bad out there. 3.3 In the mean time I don't remember a single message of mine where I crossed the line with my language, directly insulted a single player or basically do anything so it is deleted or I get a warning. Which means that I was probably not doing anything bad out there. 4.1. And yeah I know I'm not a very smart, nice or sociable person. 4.2. However I am quite sure I received much worse treatment than I gave to others. 4.2. So yeah, I'm sick of having s**t thrown at me and pretend it is OK and I have nothing against the people doing it. 4.3. I don't hate them. I wouldn't feed them to a crocodile in real life (as someone said about me in another thread). But I think I am allowed to say that at least I don't like them. And they (should have) had their reward in the fact that they (should have) had fun doing that. They shouldn't now also expect respect or admiration for the fact that they wasted invested a few months / years of their lives (in played /time) with a game. I will save my respect and admiration for people succeeding and make it big there where it matters, in real life, not for those doing it in a game, which by dictionary definition is just "an activity that one engages in for amusement". And in the end... sorry if I disappointed you... and despite the fact that you feel like that about me, I still like you. Safe travels, Alex
  7. Yeah... I pretty much disrespect everyone that feel that they "invested" their time... even more I disrespect people who have that elitist approach of keeping on their advantages and don't want that other have a easier, more entertaining game experience, just because "back in their days" they did it "the hard way". It's a game... it should be played for fun... not seen as a "time investment"... as a chore... as a second job or a second life... But although I disrespect and dislike people like that, that doesn't mean I hate you or that I don't understand your points of view. It's just that I don't like or agree with them (just like you don't like or agree with mine - fair game ). And It's not like I can tame Rolf and give him commands to implement my suggestions. It's a suggestions forum so I just make what suggestions I feel like... the devs can look over them (or not) and decide if anything that I say makes sense or not for them... If you don't like them "-1" (eventually with arguments). Eventually, if you think I brake the rules by posting this here, report my posts and I'm sure mods will do their job and take measures against me if I'm guilty.
  8. TBH I was always convinced that "Epic sucks" but the replays I got on my recent threads (not only this one) proved that I was wrong... and TBH, I kinda regret I never really give it a shot... Which comes to the basic point that there should be some clear and somehow comprehensive explanations at the end of the tuturial to help one make an informed decision.
  9. @Druid: Well, pretty much that's how things goes for most games: people come, play for 2-3 years, then quit; it's not about trying to keep people 10 years in a game, it's about trying to be sure that always the new comers are more than the quitters, though assuring a positive trend in the number players. Yeah, people would probably get bored about the fast paced PVE server in 1-2-3 years and they would quit and move on, but as long as they had fun during this time and there are other new players coming to take their place, I don't see what's the problem with that. @kagrenac: Point is that maybe some people love the building part, have great ideas and want to build nice castles and towns. But they want to build them today, or next month, or whatever, not grind skills for three years to be able to plan a build castle.
  10. Actually after reading all the arguments (those rational), I think that what would be best would be an "epic PVE" server. After all PVP players have both the slow (Chaos) and the fast (Epic) paced options (for those who want to actually get in the game in a couple of weeks, months at most, not in a few years ), why PVE players should not have it? Anyway that's a totally different idea so I will give it some more thought and try to post it in its own thread next time I'll be bored on the subway. PS: And once again, I don't want this for myself. I hate grinding, true, but I don't care about having high skills, so the slow pace of Freedom doesn't really bother me so much. It's more a suggestion which I think would attract more people to the game and bring more money for development. No matter you like it or not, most players are casual players, looking for a (relative) easy mode, which WURM is definitely not offering. And I'm quite sure that none of us is happy with having only ~100 online players per server at most times.
  11. Wanted it to prove my point in a discussion with someone else. Not that I personally cared about it or didn't anticipated it. ) And anyway, that was one of the reasons. The other was that I actually do thing that is an idea that would benefit the game and would help it attracting more casual players. If all AAA gaming companies out there made it easier for new players to catch up with the old ones, I guess there is a good reason for this - and that reason is attracting more new players to the game. Maybe my idea is not the best one. No problem. But really, you can't expect to really attract lots of new players to a game where in order to catch up with the old players you need to spend years grinding. There may be some people that would do it (Silakka is a great example - he started late, but made it big), but there is no way this will be entertaining for masses of people. And I would really want to see something like 500-1.000 people online on every server at any time, vibrant towns with at least 50 people online in them at any given time, etc. Something like having 5-10 towns like Bashur's on every server. And for that you need a lot of new players.
  12. I think is quite obvious - because there are some things which I actually like about WURM. Like the freedom to fully terraform the world and the farming part. I liked Minecraft (except that I hated the square blocky look) and I liked Farmville. Somehow WURM has both of these in one game, so I like that. On the other hand, I hate grinding and I also don't like a few other things, so yeah, I try to come with suggestions on what I think would make the game better. Are they good, are they bad... dunno... but I just feel like throwing them out there so the devs see them and potentially take something out of them. About people's reaction I couldn't care less. It's no secret that I don't like (not meaning that I hate, just don't like) most of the people from here and it's no secret that most of you don't like (here I think hate might actually work too) me either. So I don't post for people reaction, I just post so the devs could eventually read my ideas and potentially make some changes to the game. If it won't happen... not a biggie... I will keep playing 'till there will be another game out there that will give me this terraforming freedom with less grinding. Very simple again. I do care about new players and I do care about game's well being, but not enough to actually spend my game time working for this. On the other hand throwing an idea, typed from my phone, while in subway going to school or workplace, is no wasted time. Remember how your post looked before you edit it a few times in a row. If that was not a perfect example of personal attack I don't know what it is. Anyway, since I already proved my point to the editor I was talking with and I also exposed my ideas, I won't continue this. I just answered this question of yours because it was probably the very first time when you actually asked me a valid question and not just attacked me.
  13. It is really amusing to see how shortsighted some people could be, automatically presuming that someone making a suggestion would only do it to benefit herself. FYI I already have at least one skill over 50, so this would not benefit me. I just think it could help other new players close the gap between them and older player a bit faster. Because I really feel that something should be done to increase player retention after first purchase (one or two months). And maybe some of you enjoy grinding, but many others don't, and in my short time here I saw many people coming to the game, being excited of the game freedom, but quitting as soon as they realized that getting to some decent skills, which would allow them to make their building dreams come true would take months or even years of grinding. I would just like a game like "chess" or even minecraft, where your personal skill and your imagination are the success factors, not the amount of time you wasted doing same action over and over again. And on a even funnier note: I actually do think that this is a good idea which would help increase the playerbase, but the main reason I made it was just to make a point. Earlier yesterday I was talking with someone, telling him how unfriendly and aggresive the WURM community is, and I told him that "you wanna see it live, see people getting to personal attacks, imstead of poliyely discuss an idea? All you have to do is to throw in a bait saying something about reducing the grind." Then I made this post, lean back on my chair and start laughing as the personal attacks started to kick in. Quod erat demonstrandum
  14. I know many of you are against any change that would make the game easier in any way and you eould do anything to prevent new players from closing the gap to veteran players. Yet, if you check ANY other game out there you will see that after a game was on for quite a few years, these kind of changes appear and the reason is quite simple: any new player wants to feel that he is somehow important, that he doesn't have to spend years just to come to the point where he can compete with the vets. So here is what I suggest: DOUBLE SKILL GAIN for players who have no skill over 50, until they reach 50 in the first skill. This would allow them to get in the game earlier and hook more players to the game. Also we all know that getting to 50 is not really a big deal, and the real troubles start only after 70. So it's more a psychological thing to make them actually feel a bit better, and more in tone with the older players. And yeah, that would help people be a bit more self sufficient, as in being able to plan bigger/taller houses faster, be able to build their own big sheeps or whatever. But it's not like this would destroy the economy, because we all know that one starts really making profit from trades only after 70 (or even higher). So... What do you think? Also please argument your plus or minus ones. Thank you!
  15. You got me wrong, guys. I never said that I would like to make real life profit out of WURM - like "working in WURM" eight hours per day / five days per week, earning coins, selling coins and cash out in real life. Also I doubt any sane person would actually considering this (I apologize if I offended someone here). My dilemma was between: - work in WURM just enough to allow you to play the game for free... that meaning 10 silver per month for premium and... dunno... 2 extra silver per month for deed maintenance - just buy the premium time and those silvers with real life money And, despite the fact that yeah, Romania is a poor country and minimum wage is indeed around 1.5 euros / hour, and for example I only make like 3 euros / hour, I still don't find it worth to "work in WURM" for a payment of 0.20 - 0.25 euros per hour. So I just decided I will finance any of my game expenses with real life money. And the point of the thread was to show other people (who may have not the math), that in the vast majority of cases (I can understand there are exception) it is simply not worth to try to earn the coins in game and that "free" playing can easily turn into a chore or into a second job. That was all.
  16. I considered where to post this thread quite a lot. First idea was, as you said, a recruitment thread, but I'm not really recruiting, but more like try to form an alliance, so not really falling under that category. Second idea was to post on my server's section, but I'm not est on doing it here, but somehow willing to travel to other servers if I find the right people on there, so not falling under that category either.
  17. I never did it myself, but that's what I was told to by someone that bought a few rods. If you did it yourself and you only got 40, then you are probably right, and I apologize for the (slight) error I made.
  18. I have a homestead on Exodus server ATM, but if I would find the right people, I would have no problem moving to other PVE server, if that's what those people would prefer.
  19. To be honest, I think you can be a role model and an inspiration for any new player - you started late, yet you made it big and you are indeed one of the top terraformers in the WURM world and also quite a rich person controlling a niche of the market. Well done there! And hat off to you! But... you also had the luck of having quite a lot of time at your disposal, a luxury not everyone has. Somehow I am unhappy and I want to change everything... I admit it. I'm not the kind of person trying to "adapt" and "accept", but instead try to "solve the problem" and "adapt the others to my vision" - lol. And in this case, yeah, I think that if a group of people decide to deliberately ignore the older player and just try to live a "fresh experience", playing only by their own, they could experience somehow the pioneering period that was eight years ago or when P/R were released. And I hope there are people thinking like this and I want to find those people and I want to "live my dream". Will I fail? Probably. Will I only make more people hate me? Probably. But still, I feel that I owe this to myself - to at least try to make my dream come true, not just adopt the attitude that "well, it would have been nice, but not possible... have to live with this". Reason was not the price... but the fact that I wanted to do things by my own... not taking any shortcuts, but enjoy the extra challenge of having to work my as s out for every single tool and piece of gear. I somehow deserve it... TBH I would probably hate myself - lol... I know I have strong opinions about things and weird points of views... and many of them are probably straight dumb or ridiculously. What I don't understand is why people can't just ignore, of if they feel like entering a debate attack my ideas, not my persona...
  20. My problem with this is that it kills the sense of progression for yourself / your small community - like what reason would be to celebrate when the first three speed foal is born within the community, when people already bought five speeders from the older players, or what need there is for the community's weaponsmith which has 30 WS, when people buy 70ql weapons from the market. Better explained here: http://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/91794-anyone-interested-of-a-true-pioneering-experience/
  21. Hello folks, I have to admit. Ever since I start playing WURM I kinda hated the veteran, hardcore players. But the problem was that I didn't know why. For a while I thought it is because of my competitive spirit (typical to any gamer, isn't it? ) and for the fact that I knew that I could never close the gap between me - the new, casual player, and them - the old, hardcore playing veterans. But this morning I realized it was not that. It was just envy. And not envy for what they have now, but envy for what they had when they started: The chance to actually have a sense of progression through game - they were forced to start with wild horses, low quality armours and weapons, then they had the chance to celebrate the first one speeder, the first two speeder, and so on / the first time they managed to upgrade their armours and weapons to 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 quality, the first time they were able to kill a mountain lion, a spider, a troll, the moment when they were able to build their first boat or their first ship. And, even more, the chance to actually have to do that in a community of people being in the same position, in a community of people that actually had to learn to work together in order to succeed. Instead, nowadays, almost every new player just buys 70+ ql tools, armour and weapons, eventually also with some nice enchants, 5 speed horses, at least a corbita and then just start grinding skills, not because they really need them (because let's be honest, it will be years 'till they will be able to replace those bought things with better, self crafted items). And yeah, that helps them close the gap with the old players, and "level up" faster. But in my vision it kills an important part of the fun - the part where you actually feel that you're progressing. Truth is that I always played my game without any of these shortcuts - I never bought any items (nor accepted any items as gifts) and I only used what ever I was able to craft with my (character's) own hands. And it was OK, I enjoyed every day of it and I saw my efforts showing better results (not just numbers in the skill tab) day after day. However, what I really missed was the idea of a community - mind liked people, who would also enjoy to enjoy a true pioneering experience and play the game "hard mode", without buying any fancy stuff from seasoned veterans, and just try to be self sufficient and get the job done with whatever we could produce in our small community. So now I am wondering if there are any other people (relative new - let's say less than 30 days played /time, and quite casual) out there who would like to join me in this challenge of having our own pioneering experience and enjoy by ourselves what the veterans enjoyed when Wild / Inde / Pristine were first introduced - start from scratches and end up doing great things, without any "external" help. So... anyone up for joining me on this journey? Note: A few more things about the dream I have.
  22. 38s goes to king funds (dissapear), while 12s stays with the trader, and can be drained (get) back by selling items to the trader up to that value.
  23. Hello folks, Ever since my first day of WURM I had a dream, a dream which I still have, but which I never managed to fulfill. And I would just like to know if it is an impossible dream, or I just too dumb abd shortsighted for being able to succeed. Well... in my dream, I was living on my small homestead (need a minimum of independence and private space), in a smallish neighborhood / alliance (dunno... something like 3-5 homesteads), quite isolated of the big markets and old players , and trying to be self sufficient as a community, helping each other (like sharing ships, resources, splitting the workload - like the weapon smith would provide free weapons fir everyone, the horse breeder would provide free horses for everyone, and so on), and having quite a few common events (like dunno... Hunting together, building together some community projects - dunno like an inn or a bigger ship which everyone could use, or even the odd role playing events)? Well, does something like that exists and I was just too stupid and unsocial to find, or it's a utopia? And if it exists... aby idea how to find one? Thank you in advance for any snswer, even critic ones! Cheers, Alex
