  1. Grats Sme, great job!
  2. - In wurm most people have a bunch of alts. This would basically mean that any deed of 10 people would have 10-20 alts running around on guard duty, effectively making it a 20 or 30 person's deed for defense purposes. Making it harder to raid than it currently is. - The idea of staying in game while logged out would result in people staying within the safety of their deeds even more. Logging out in the open will be very risky, so it will be done less. Less exploring, less chance of random encounters. Always staying in close distance to safety of the deed. Keep in mind the mentality of people is to make sure their possesions and their char is as safe as they can get them. This mentality will not change, people will keep searching for the best way to safely store their char. Which will mean taking even less risks than they did before. - Also keep in mind that the difference between ark/rust and wurm is that in the former games reaching your max cap and resupplying is a breeze. You can restore yourself to former glory within hours/days. In wurm this will take way longer. So the punishment for losing your stuff is much higher and this also makes the need for protecting your stuff much higher. Lets say you log in with the thought of doing some pvp or raiding that day and you find your char dead and all the posessions gone, this means the coming weeks you will be rebuilding, gathering stuff and crafting. In the survival games you would be working a couple hours before you are ready again. - Playing as a complete newbie wurm is hard enough as is. You won't be able to build your first safe house the very first day, meaning you have to log off in a potentially dangerous area with the risk of losing your gear. Any wild cat stumbling upon your logged out char will make minced meat of it. They probably have no idea where they were when they died, so finding back their corpse will be hard. Also even if they manage to build a safe place for themselves, they will be very limited in their movements. One of the joys of playing as a newbie is exploring and seeing all the wonderfull things other people have built. But going out and exploring will be a clear death sentence. Any hostile mob will kill a logged out newbie. - Even a more seasoned player will be in danger, because logging out on a regular day will mean 7 hours of sleep, 8-9 hours of work, 1 hour each before and after work to prepare and travel, meaning your char will be vulnerable to mob attacks for 17 hours. How many mobs can your char tank without healing himself for 17 hours? Plus you will soon have to get back to base to get your equipment back up to decent quality, which it lost from all the reparing it had to do. - Any newbie with a bow and enough arrows can kill the strongest player while logged out. It's good to think up ways to make pvp more fun and engaging and imo pvp in most survival games is more fun and engaging than in wurm. Things like safemines and merchant storing are (cheap) tricks that should be taken care of, but I don't think this is the way to do that. Rather make it so mine doors are much easier to take down or get into (in a minute's time), be it with bashing, a siege machine or add locks which can be picked. And a merchant should have the goods stored in a chest nearby which can be picked (or bashed open with the danger of damaging and losing the items inside). You want to make sure that once people are engaged in a siege or pvp situation they don't have an easy way out. But you should not have to fear for your char if you log out in a place away from any siege or pvp situation. The grind in wurm is too big for the idea's you are presenting. Most likely resulting in even less pvp. I think it comes down to how much of a grindfest wurm is, which makes full loot very punishing compared to survival games. And with that the possiblity of storing your items safely away on alt chars, which can't be done on Ark because you can't have multiple chars on one server. But wurm is designed to need more than one char, most likely to maximize revenue. I don't think forcing people into pvp is going to make it more fun for them. If they enjoyed going into pvp they would do so. It's the game mechanics of grinding a long time for your stuff that creates the mentality of wanting to keep safe at all times. I think we can assume that the people joining a pvp server do really have/had the will to do pvp. If you would take these people to ark they would more actively participate, not because the game mechanics force them but because the punishment for losing is small. So don't try to force people but rather create an environment in which the punishment for losing is not so severe. Then people will actually want to do pvp, instead of hide away. The risk-reward or work-fun balance is very poor in wurm. Your idea of opening up the full loot will only work if you'd make getting back on your feet a days work instead of a fortnight's work.
  3. Yes that is exactly how it should be actually. That is the whole problem here: New players don't stand any chance when they join pvp, they don't do now, they didn't do 2 years ago and they will even less in the future. Because those two year old accounts will always stay two years older. And to make it worse, it's not just two year old accounts, it's 5 to 9 year old accounts they have to compete with. There will not be any new, lasting players so long as there is this unbreachable gap. The fact that you cannot get on the same level as other players in two months (or two years for that matter) is the prime reason for the dying pvp servers. This is fundamentally wrong with wurm pvp, pvp 'skill' is based on time and there is no cap. Meaning anyone joining an 'x' amount of time after the start of the server will never be able to catch up or have a fair chance. This 'x' amount of time has long passed by now. In any other pvp game you can join years after release and have a fair chance, based on your own personal skill set. If I would join any fps game I would be better than 75% of the players within two months, because I am good at this type of game, always have been. If I would join any rts game I would be worse than 75% of the players and would never get a lot better than that, simply because I suck at those games. But I have a friend who is good at it and he would be better than 75% of the players within two months. If anyone would join wurm pvp now, they would always stay worse than 100% of the players that joined 3 years earlier. Those first two game types will always allow new players in and give them a reasonable chance of survival, based on their own skill set. As a new player in a 5 year old game you most likely will not become the nr1 player, since there will be some players that are just as good as you only with 5 more years of experience. But this only means you will lose 6 out of 10 times. This also means you win 4 out of 10. In wurm playing against someone with years more play time will mean you lose 10 out of 10, always. I have already seen a couple people in this thread mention that wurm pvp is not only dependant on grinding 'skills' but that actual experience, positioning, group work, smartness, the use of the fight window etc. are also important aspects (which are also mostly the deciding factors in other pvp games). If there is already this experience based system in place, which can easily decide the outcome of a fight between two equally 'skilled' and outfitted players, then why does wurm pvp still depend on this 'skill'-grinding system? Sotg is a problem also, it is clearly not the only problem, but it's one of the most obvious factors with it's minimum of 6 months delay time. You would need years to grind the skills needed for pvp, not only the ones directly influencing fighting (like fs, weaponskill, blocking, bodystats) but also support skills needed to provide yourself with quality weapons, armor, horse, horse gear. Which are all minimum requirements for entering pvp. Providing each of these for yourself is an immense, time consuming task. Not only to grind the skills (this will mean less time grinding pvp related skills), but also making new stuff every single time you die. And as a new player that is what you will be doing all the time, dying. You will need to create the infrastructure to make these pvp items, you will need to make tools, chests, a base. These all require you to grind your basic skills of digging, mining, woodcutting. If you start as a new player, or group of new players and want to autonomously prepare yourself for pvp you've got a couple years of grinding to do. The times you can storm into battle with 50ql chain on a wild horse are long gone. (<- btw I don't know if this was ever a thing) So not only do you need to grind pvp related skills but also half of the rest of the skill tree and level 50 skills won't do. Ofcourse you should find yourself a nice group of vets that support you. But you can’t expect them to supply you forever. I myself had really good experience with finding a group of people being friendly en very supportive in this manner. But it’s not cool to have to ask for a new suit of armor everytime you die. And I believe in a well balanced pvp game you shouldn’t have to spend so much time outside of pvp just to be able to participate, or be so dependant on others to supply you. Also I doubt every new player will be as lucky in finding a nice group of vets. So yeah, that's the second problem. Apart from the impossible to breach skill-gap, there's the problem of having to supply yourself with hours and hours worth of gear every time you die. I have heard many a vet complain about having to make horse shoes again. Every hour you spend working on gear will mean an hour less of pvp fun, which could be over in 10 minutes and you are back to hours of working again. I know this is what wurm is all about, 90% work and 10% fun. But for a new player it would be 90% work and another 10% of no fun with pvp being out of reach. There are some things that can be done about the problem, but all would involve making it much easier for new players to get on the same level as vets. By either boosting skill gain for new players or nerfing the skills gained by vets, or better yet making the pvp system based only on experience and not on time-consuming skills. And this will, understandably, piss off most vets because they have spent years and years of their lifes grinding skills to get on their skill level of godliness. And having ppl around reaching the same level in a couple weeks will feel like they just lost years of work. It is kinda sad if you think about it. (Not meant in a condescending way) If there will be taken no action to attract new players then wurm pvp will keep dying untill noone is left. Resulting in people losing their hard earned accomplishments. But if there will be taken action then they will still end up feeling like they lost their hard earned accomplishments because of the sudden devaluation of skills.
  4. Ofcourse this will not be the end of Wurm, just like the previous 50 times wurm 'evolved'. Every time something bigger than a graphical update comes along the same crowd stands up and loudly prophetizes the end of wurm. Yet It's also this same group that forces our beloved game creators to resort to things like the challenge server and WU. If any such big change would be introduced in the current WO servers all hell would break loose, sending aforementioned group into a quasi-autistic frenzy. For some people it's just really hard to cope with change. And change is what will happen to this game. Wurm has been a project in development from the day it was created and I doubt we are close to finalization. I think it is pretty obvious Rolf would like to expand on the pvp side of this game, but with this outspoken group of 'conservative' players it's hard to implement anything like this. That's why the challenge server was introduced, to test out new ideas and to attract a more 'progressive' crowd of people, not afraid of moving forward with this game. But with the current game state and community it's difficult to attract the so very needed new players to keep this game alive. So a different approach was needed which comes in the way of WU. WU will: 1. Introduce wurm to a large group of new players, possibly also luring them into WO. 2. Generate an amount of revenue which can be directly invested into WO. (finances and money-flow seems important to a certain group of players) And most importantly: 3. Give players the possibility of creating their own perfect version of wurm. From which then ofcourse elements can be adopted into WO. Instead of using the resources of Code Club AB and having to go against a group of conservative players, they can let others do the work for them in a free environment. It is a very smart way of finding out what exactly the community would like to see content-wise without having to do any of the work / taking any of the risks.
  5. Discuss Epic plz

What I think is needed is a more accessible pvp situation. Right now it's pretty difficult for a new player to get into the thick of the fight and I'm not even mentioning the impossible survival chances. Going from a home server to Elevation is easy enough, but then you will have to find yourself an established village that will take you in, help you skill up and provide the necessary logistics. If you would have to provide this all for yourself we are talking about months of dedicated grinding of skills, being able to get your fight skills, armour crafting skills, weapon crafting skills, animal husbandry skills etc. Those are all needed to even have a slight chance in pvp. A good horse, a good armour, a good weapon/shield and good fight skills. But those are also all the things you will lose when you die and as a new player you will die, often. Which makes you having to replace all those things again and again. This takes an insane amount of time if you would have to do this all by yourself. What I think we need is an arena style combat area, comparable to what we had in the last challenge server. You get to the arena by means of teleportation, portals in every starter town and craftable by players if they want one in their village, on both Elevation and the home servers. When connecting to the arena you spawn inside the starting barracks of your kingdom. Where you will: - Pick up armor, weapons and a horse. Everything will be the same ql and will not be transferrable outside the arena. - Distribute skill points. Upon entering the arena you will lose all your skill points for the duration of your stay, but will be given the option to distribute an "x" amount yourself. Example: You will get 100 points to distribute over your characteristics. You will get 200 points to distribute over your skills. (weapon(s), shield, bow) Every point invested in the 0-50 range will cost you 1 point. Every point invested in the 51-75 range will cost you 2 points. Every point invested in the 76-100 range will cost you 3 point. To make sure it won't become a priest fest they get the same amount of points to distribute, but will ofc want to distribute them over more than just the fight related skills. Making them less strong as fighters and better suitable as supporters. Make the soul depth/soul strength characteristic directly and significantly influence the faith regeneration. - The goal of the arena will be to capture and hold pillars. The arena will have 4 pillars, 1 in the middle and 3 halfway between the kingdom barracks and the middle. Capturing and holding the middle pillar will grant you "medals", killing other kingdom players will also grant you "medals". Medals can be used to buy all the current hota goodies and hota related titles. (what you should be able to buy is very much open to discussion) The things you buy with the medals will serve the game outside the arena but the medals themselves are not tradable. You can only start capturing the middle pillar if your kingdom's pillar is controlled by your kingdom. - You will not gain or lose skill upon death, but affinities can still be gained/lost. - Outside the arena everything will stay the same as it is now with the exception of the Elevation hota zone. The hota zone could use a geological make over and could become an area dedicated to missions instead.
  6. I doubt Rolf created this game with dollar signs in his eyes. This is an indy game and not an EA cash-grab game. Whether one server makes more profit than another is totally irrelevant as long as the game as a whole generates enough money to keep the servers running and pay the salaries of the staff. That's usually the good thing about indy games, they are not created for the sole purpose of generating money but to satisfy the creative needs of the persons developing them. This game is Rolfs game and will be created the way he wants it. Which is pretty clearly a pvp orientated sandbox game. Whining about either the amount of profit a server generates or about the further development of the pvp aspect of this game is pretty useles. Aparently the pve side of the game is developped enough, otherwise it would not have a bigger playerbase than the pvp side. So logically the pvp side gets more attention to bring it on par with the pve side.
  7. One does not generally enter into an agreement with oneself. (though getting into disagreement with oneself is probably an even more rare occurence) He is talking about other people and their alts. According to the following quote this is exactly what he did. The guy converting for a whole bunch of free kills can definitely be considered gaming the system, the fact that he was ahead and had fun in doing so is completely irrelevant. One does not just stumble upon winning 4 categories, serious time and effort must be invested in very specific area's. And although it is possible he had fun while spending his time on the challenge server, it is quite clear he was not your average casual player. We all know playing wurm is work and achieving something in wurm is hard work. Don't try to pass this off as a random person looking for some casual fun. If he was just looking for some fun in the end, then it was not necessary to convert, wurm has plenty possibilities built in for same kingdom 1v1's. Now I personally don't know this Laststand and Whatthetruck guy's, all I know about them I have read in this thread. And I don't really care who has won what category, but if I see someone getting in such a defensive stance I get suspicious. And if in their incompetent efforts to defend their friend they hand over evidence of his apparent "gaming the system", I get a strong sense of injustice.
  8. Hello people of Wurm. My girlfriend has trouble with loading the game. The launcher works nicely, but once she starts the game it crashes on her.
