I have a highly controversial idea: let's see how the new system works before we complain any more.

you must be new here. this is how you get stuck with horrible updates that don't get touched again or fixed.  ie fishing update, valrei "updates", bandaid fixes for the cluster that devs forgot exist, etc

Those without strongwall are at a disadvantage making canals

Those without Circle of Cunning are at a disadvantage skilling

You don't generally make canals all the time, it's a more high end later game project for pve players.  Breeding horses for riding or hitching is more of an every day occurance for players of all kinds and even noobs can get decent horses fairly easily.

You also aren't getting a new coc cast every day/week.  Breeding from scratch to get all the correct traits is a potentially many months long process.

But ah, yes.  Classic wurm response, if an update makes something horrible or impossible, just buy it instead of accepting that its bad for some people or quite literally impossible by normal game mechanics for others.

    Better Breeding

As mentioned before, there is a rework to traits that will provide more benefits to careful breeding of your creatures. 23 new traits have been added, and traits now belong to particular categories with changes to how traits are passed on and calculated. Parents sharing a majority of traits in one particular category increases the chance for all traits in that category to be passed on. Speed trait parents are more likely to have speed trait offspring, draft parents will more likely produce draft traited offspring, and so on. The categories are as follows:

    • Speed - Giving ridden creatures a bonus to their riding speed. These no longer increase the speed of vehicles the animal may be hitched to.
    • Draft - Allowing creatures to carry more, and providing speed bonuses to vehicles with hitched animals. Heavier loads will slow vehicles down, but draft animals will increase speed of the vehicle they are hitched to. Bison will have a large natural bonus on top of draft traits.
    • Combat - These traits focus on combat bonuses, reduction in damage taken, and improving taming. Creatures with these traits can be easier to tame, and stay tame longer.
    • Resource - Effect output for things like wool and milk, as well as the quality and quantity of butchered products.
    • Miscellaneous - General traits with a range of effects like preventing creatures to roam even without a saddle, reducing food consumption, and reducing the chance to pack tiles.
    • Negative traits - ones which have effects that may reduce usefulness.

A few rare traits have been added which won’t be seen (or passed on) as easily/often as normal traits. These have wonderful effects like making aggressive creatures permanently passive (hello, house cats!), the ability to produce twins with identical traits when bred, and riding up slightly steeper slopes. Creatures may only have one rare trait.

Traits will no longer directly be capped by your Animal Husbandry level. Each trait is now worth a certain amount of points (from -10 to 20), and you may have points up to your Animal Husbandry level. This does make negative traits beneficial in some situations due to having a negative "cost", and leaving extra room for more or higher point traits. Rare traits will cost no points against your total. This point system will be explained further once the update is ready to be released.

    Shaping Up Beautifully

These trait categories bring us to the addition of new shapes for our equine friends based on the traits they posses. This will bring more variety to the look of your herds and provide visual clues to the best use for each particular animal. Malena has made some wonderful images to show the changes, and provided a great explanation of the different shapes.

    Hot blooded horse:

    • These will be your riding horses, with speed traits.

    Warm blooded horse:

    • This is the default that we have in the game now (an "all round" horse with no qualities that make it especially stand out more in one category)

    Cold blooded horse:

    • Stronger and able to work more efficiently. These will be your draft trait horses.

Below is Malena's original suggestion post explaining the thoughts behind these new shapes and images of the above body styles in each color of horse:

It's right in-line with the other lengthy goals: imp 100K times, perform 500K actions, get a skill to 99, etc, all skills that should take time to complete.  People can find time for Rifts if they really want to.

maybe its easier for you to understand this way

when mom yells down the basement that dinners ready and to pause your online game (rifts at times you cannot control)

    vs

living on your own and ordering tendies when youre free to (literally any other goal you can do at your own discretion)

I heard a rumor ages ago that someone saved every coin earned in prayer and that when the containers holding them finally decayed, the avalanche of coins re-entering the world crashed the server.

it didnt crash the server, it crashed anyone that tried to look at them.  gms had to individually remove coins from their inventory for a very long time before it was safe again, pretty sure it was emoo so he could tell it better but thats what i recall

It is interesting to note that WU servers offer almost everything being proposed to make wurm free players happy, and yet those populations are not exploding. Why? Free deeds? Check. Fast skill rate? Check? No riding restrictions? Check. QOL improvements? Check. No priest restrictions? Check. It's almost like there is no easy answer to this issue and simply pandering to free players isn't a silver bullet.

you answered your own question by simply saying "wu".  its a no longer supported side game with no official servers and no official in game staff like there are in wo.  no one enjoys servers owned by other players that have ripe potential for so much abuse of power, no anti-cheat, no guarantee your work exists tomorrow, and so forth.

As a cautionary tale, think back to what Sony did to SWG as an example of what listening to the immediate gratification crowd can do when dealing with long-term crafters and an invested playerbase.

you can also look at how adding f2p at all to wurm improved the population vs when it was entirely p2p.  you also dont have to view it in such an overdramatic extreme way, giving more incentives for f2p to continue playing the game as f2p instead of leaving thinking the game sucks doesn't mean give them everything important which i dont even know how that relates to instant gratification

Runescape is often used as an example, but in runescape skilling has a much more social component.  A guy is sitting there skilling his melee on cows, a guy is gathering the leather for his crafting, another is gathering bones for prayer, and another is gathering meat for cooking.  These interactions are possible because free to play runescape is a LOT smaller than wurm online, and resources have a smaller impact upon the game world

the difference is runescape is only able to be social IN a local way because there aren't server or global chats outside of more private clan chats.  wurm makes up for the lack of the local social stuff by being able to talk to anyone on any (freedom) server at any given time without having to use an out of game method to do so

Chaos was never the default for PvP. Epic was a great addition, but I feel like it's more of a classic now than an addition.

thats weird, when i started on gv in 2010 and portalled out wild/chaos was my only option for pvp.  sounds pretty default to me

  8. what people really fail to realize is the free players populate the world which in effect keeps more players, as its very common for people to leave a game because it feels dead or empty.  one of the core reasons i dont play anymore is because theres no one to play with, i cant stand this game as a solo game, i started 11 years ago and back then the game despite being absolute dog crap compared to now with all the fancy bells and whistles was so much more fun because i played with people.  i log in to epic to disband a deed and see no one in the only alliance on the server.  i port back to independence to log off in the biggest alliance on the second most populated original freedom cluster server and see no one.  if there was even just 10 f2p names playing in those lists as sad as that is that would make things actually feel alive

in the steam launch discussion thread i suggested a f2p model like runescapes and rolf liked it.  runescape allows f2p to get skills to max, just some are locked behind p2p and f2p lose access to the best skilling methods and the best gear.  and yet as i write this there are 130k players online across osrs and rs3, and according to an article from jan 2020 they have over 1.1 million members.  im sure its safe to tell the anti-f2p people that more f2p won't kill the game, but rather something far more obvious that has already been doing so for many years

AFAIK affinities are decided upon skill checks, so at 100 mining skill you shouldn't be getting any mining skill checks therefore not being able to get more affinities in mining.

the fun thing is its only 100 because its rounded up and the maximum the client can show you but you still gain skill invisibly because its not exactly 100 yet and probably not really possible to get in most skills.  you even get the title for 100 skill before you get 100 thats how polished it is

The potential use as high quality combat gear far exceeds the current use as glamour.

I think some casters still use cloth gear in combat?

if someone bonks goblins for 5 hours to get a witch hat to use as high quality combat gear...    just let them

  11. The issue with horse colors is that they're traits, and are weighted.  You might have a black silver male and a black silver female breed a black silver foal - however the new traits are lowest in the order so if by some chance it rolls something like black or gold as well, it will have both color traits black and black silver or gold and black silver, but since black or gold are higher priority traits, the horse will be black or gold despite having that black silver trait.  Before someone goes trigger happy removing the chance of multiple color traits - its the only way you can "down" breed a rarer color (it rolls the rarer color but fails the dominant one)

A grey horse is the absence of any color trait, so a grey foal from 2 black silver parents just means you were likely to have a black silver foal but failed

  12. the feel i get from this thread is that issues are being addressed by saying they're being addressed, and then we get stuck with horrible updates under the guise that they can be tweaked later, but it doesn't actually happen

    you know, like history shows

  13. This is pretty much exactly what I said needs to not be touched in a post I made in the link thread.  It's complicated by design, you're adding waiting to get favor on top of already waiting to get favor from waiting 30 seconds to finish the sacrifice option on top of the absolutely ridiculous methods of getting the favor in the first place.

We don't need getting favor to be worse.  We don't need updates that require manuals and math to properly understand and plan.  Favor needs to be not hard to get and for fun make sacrificing at an altar 10 seconds.  Not very complicated.

Honestly...  why does a chopped onion give 2.5 favor or whatever miserable number it gives now?  Why do you have to have the absolute best ql sac items to still only get 20 favor each item where a more achievable ql to the average player in mass examples will end up giving just 5 or 10?  Is the game going to suffer and die if you can sac a 70ql yoyo for 40 favor?  A 90ql door lock for 60 favor?

  14. The playerbase in wurm that steam brought in just isn't enough - it's not enough to fill in all the old servers, epic, and the steady stream of new servers.

The new amount of players online at any time is what 1000 more than before, maybe more in the more populated times?  If only we saw numbers like that befo.... oh right we did, with way less servers and it wasn't enough.  Maybe pve can thrive with servers that see 5-20 people on it, but pvp cannot.  Chaos/epic only get any kind of boost when someone decides to make something happen, and it never lasts.  Invigoration by devs via resets and updates only generate worse results every time.

The servers need consolidation.  It won't ever happen for pve, so start with the obvious glaring issue; the only servers in wurm that have different mechanics than the rest - epic.  Those poor souls that still play there (Epic cluster players 1/3200) are people that will either play chaos, play freedom, or get mad and quit which is still a better fate than playing epic.  Merge accounts/items to freedom and delete servers, merge everything, merge nothing, just do something before we all die from corona wave #37 god damn

Darklord posted in discord I believe. Once the bug/player abusing it was reported they checked and confirmed there were people casting with unlimited favor.

    That's not the exploit though

  16. I'm curious - all these people begging for exploiters to get punished, but I haven't seen anywhere confirmation if it was actually abused?  I've only seen one random post that even said what the exploit was.

By all means, if someone did for sure abuse a bug punish the abuse, but what was the highest channeling - and if it was a blacklight priest is their 15% skillgain buff to religion and its subskills being taken into consideration?

  17. Maybe the devs should look at why people are using links to grind channeling in the first place and realize they should stop doing insignificant things with natural favor regen and keeping favor sac items trash and so difficult to get the needed amounts of favor for the horrible mechanic known as casting.  I'll literally finish the 100 rift journal by continuing to throw 5s prem on my account every few weeks to do rifts in my time zone before i finish the spend favor goal of the same journal because obtaining favor is such a sad miserable task that I'd rather not touch it at all.

  18. the year is 2022, alts in wurm have finally been banned

you have a child, they have grown old enough to play games

you introduce them to your life, the thing called wurm

they enjoy riding cows, you have a smile across your face

open the launcher, you wish to play with your child and create memories

denied, because someone on steam didn't know how to play an alt

    you smile

If you figure out that the /lotime dont correspond to what you experience, please let us know more detailed whats happening. Do you log off on deed for example?

Theres no rhyme or reason for it in my experience, the client just somehow isn't telling the server you logged off so you end up logging off 5 minutes later because thats when your "connection" times out
