For my background on this, I'm the tank for the (what I believe) most successful private hunting/slaying team on NFI, I realize things are a bit different at the moment on SFI generally. I also suspect unique changes to come eventually, maybe even with exploration update. But just in case nothing is yet planned, here is an idea that I believe benefits both the private slayers, and the public. ------------------------------------------- I've been thinking about this quite a bit for the last year or so. The current system we have always makes it so slaying a dragon or drake privately is beneficial to the finder, while humanoid uniques are always public. No one really -needs- scale or hide on pve, though it certainly is nice to have. However that blood, while also not necessary is generally far more useful to all players. Quite a good deal of drakes/dragons being privately slain reduces the amount of these bloods available to players quite a bit, even in some cases making it nearly unavailable (looking at you 1+ years till a red was done publicly) But what if we could have the best of both worlds? The situation is actually quite easy to fix, and the method already exists in game. Permissions. A permission could be added to deeds to allow for "Slayers". The people given this permission by the deed owner would be able to attack the unique, and would share in the scale/hide split, additionally there would be a cooldown time to turning this off, similar to disbanding a deed. Everyone present in local would still receive blood just as before. This changes the dynamic. Now there is no reason for a "Private" slay as it stands. Everyone can come and get blood, and if you are going to do a true "Public" slaying, you allow everyone from freedom isles the "Slayer" permission. If you are going to do it "privately", you simply add the people individually. This also largely alleviates the need for GM's to be called to deal with interlopers in private slayings, wasting everyones time. Why are only people given the slayer tag permission to attack? This is to prevent someone from making a "Public" slaying, and reaping the entire reward themselves through tricking everyone. If they want to do it privately, they still need to get enough friends, allies or hired help together to kill it. Unless you can actually solo a dragon or drake. In which case, go for it. Why the cooldown timer for turning this permission off? For the same reason as above. It would be entirely too easy for someone to turn off the status in the last few % of a uniques health and finish it off with 2-3 folks after having the public do the work. I'm not entirely sure its possible to easily do this, but if it is, this would be the safest. What if the unique runs off deed? Well that's your fault isn't it. But ideally this can be fixed by the slayers not being incompetent. Usage of a strong fence can slow it briefly, and pushing the deed size over its leash spot will solve the problem largely. Edit: Also, this isn't meant as "the solution". The current system needs a total rework, but this is a solution to the current systems largest weakness.

As promised (in GL Chat) here is my whinging thread about the Global Cast requirement for Benediction And also as promised I waited until I got it done on all 3 of my priests so no one can accuse me of trying to make this easier for myself. I just feel very strongly that players should not be put through this. So why is this particular journal goal a bad thing? 1) Since players can make silver from casts, and Benediction increases the power of those casts, then this journal goal gives a financial incentive to hold other players back. I'm not saying all, or even most players would do this, but some absolutely would. 2) It penalizes players who have to work long hours. If you can only spend a few hours a week playing Wurm then your chances of participating directly in a Global Cast are virtually nil. 3) It penalizes more solitary players who don't have a wide network of friends and acquaintances, and/or those that don't hang around in chat all day. Ideally a player's personality would not cause them any disadvantage in Wurm. 4) It penalizes those who live in the "wrong" time zone. For example, some Wurm players are Australian, and since as far as I can tell the majority of Global Casts are organized by Americans and Europeans, then those in the "wrong" time zones have it hard. In the recent Global Cast on Xanadu (for example) one player had to get up before 4am on a work day in order to make it. 5) Not least of all it causes many players a lot of worry and stress, because completing this journal requirement depends upon other players' co-operation, and thus removes a player's agency to determine their own fate. What can be done about it? Well no one is asking for this journal requirement to be removed, only modified or replaced. The one good thing I can say about this requirement is that it's related to Global Casts, which is cool, because Global Casts are a priest-thing. There's something aesthetically pleasing about this. Personally I would replace it with something like "Receive benefits while under the influence of a Global Cast 5 times". Or 10 times, or whatever... This enables all players to at least have a fair chance of logging on to get that prayer done regardless of their work hours, time zone, contacts, personality, etc, as they have a 24 hour window in which to do it, and all they need to do to see whether Global Casts are currently in effect is to check Niarja at (https://www.niarja.com/universes/online). And it would take some time to achieve this, which is also good, as getting Benediction should not be easy. Since we cannot pray twice to stack benefits under the same Global Cast then I assume Wurm already tracks this to some extent, and hopefully it wouldn't be too difficult to implement a counter, while retaining the aesthetically pleasing aspect of having something related to Global Casts still be part of obtaining Benediction. Alternatively, StanLee had the idea of "rather than addressing particular 'problem' journal entries, they should add a couple more tasks to each section, but keep it that you need to clear the same number to complete", which is also a pretty decent solution. So there it is. If you hate the Global Cast requirement to Benediction (as it stands), as so many of us do, then please voice your support here and let's try to change this.

Instead of describing Wurm as an MMO, I prefer to think of it as a Breathtaking Views Generator.

Tonight, mist rises from the water in the Inner Sea. The brilliant colors of daytime become wrapped up in blues and darkened under the blinking stars. I haven’t set a date for the opening yet. It’s Day of Tears in week 2 of the starfall of the Digging in the year 1105. I’m chopping marble into bricks for fencing, and dreaming of the glow of light coming from a museum full of people, ghosts walking with the rest of us here, their stories hovering in the air like a song. The empty building stands there behind me, waiting to be filled. But I haven’t built the other two buildings that need to be here. Still so much to do… But right now, with this simple task of making bricks for fencing, on this Day of Tears, my eyes water with the nostalgia that flows through this game, under everything, like the water that we sail on, that water we dig to find on the hillside, that water that sits like hope in the darkness of our mines. I remember those who have gone on beyond the veil, and hang my head, with a joy that I got to know them at all. I think of vast estates I sailed by in years past, now fallen, or so vanished as to not have left much trace at all, and feel lucky to have seen them in their glory. On this Day of Tears, I think of us, and how the world we make falls through our hands like sand even as we grab a pile to mix with clay to make mortar for our next new creations. Something is coming, Wurmians. Soon, I hope to honor you all.

Ok it's kind of a cheap and clearly cosmetic idea but it'd be really cool if we could make woven fences at the height of low roundpole or stage 2 hedges etc that actually block movement. please and thank you

To be fair, the RoS cast my Vyn took part in was organized by Mowglia (thanks for that again) and we were scared it could/would be sniped, this has happened more than once. Someone with their personal Priest army shows up, doesn't care that Freedom even tells them there is a planed cast on the Forums and goes ahead to just do it. (has happened, was no fun at all) It resulted in me just giving up even trying cause I did not want to stress myself out over it. Now that I was gone for a while from the game due health reasons I tried again when I saw Mowglia post on the Forums and this time we were lucky. Given we had to extend the cast by a day or it would have interfered with a slaying, it was somewhat scary. On the other note, I am a hermit style player (a bit of a chicken to travel ) and it was nice to see something else and get together with other people to do this, it was a nice experience even as small as it was. If everyone would 100% respect Forum Posts about a Rite Cast being organized and there would be zero chance it being sniped, that would be a huge improvement. (Maybe add it to the rules?) On the Timezone point, yea... had it been in the middle of the night for me I would have not taken part, but I would have tried again next time and not stressed about - IF sniping wasn't a possibility. It is not like Benediction is a 100% must-have, it is a nice-to-have imho, we went years without the journal rewards and did fine. I can see both sides to this, but I think Stans idea sounds like a valid one, people can still get the benefit without having to be scared of snipes or being in under represented timezones.

Hello Wurmians, and welcome to another issue of the Valrei International! It’s been a whirlwind of a month or so between the shift in Product Management, the QoL update late last month, and the Halloween and skill gain events that are just coming to a close. I for one am ready to settle down with a nice new cup of tea, reflect over the last few weeks, and settle back into my usual more relaxed play style, how about you? While there’s not a whole lot of news in this issue, I wanted to talk about some of the great things added and changed in the last update. There was an overwhelmingly long list of patch notes, and a lot of support from many of you with the sheer amount of work involved in bringing about these fixes and updates. Let’s take a look at a few of them, shall we? One new thing we seem to all have enjoyed so far is the addition of caffeine. With its ability to help with skill gain, many players took advantage of its benefits to make the most of their grinding time during the skillgain event. Not to mention how lovely the new accessories that came along with coffee and tea look, and how many new decor options they bring to the Wurmian’s table! Along with coffee and tea, there have been a lot of QoL updates to animal husbandry, including additional information in the Inspect Animal window. Among these changes are the addition of the rarity color to rare traits in the window, the separation of different resources that can be harvested from an animal, and an estimate on how long it will be until a pregnant animal gives birth. Chickens will also now lay eggs on several new tile types! The trait “It has a chance to produce twins” has also been fixed so that only female animals are capable of having this trait, since they are the only ones able to benefit from it. A long awaited fix is for donkeys to be able to pull carts and wagons, and many more kinds of creatures can now be hitched to hitching posts. Another thing that has made many players happy is the fix for guards getting stuck in mines, or not always coming when called. There are also three new ways to call the guards, which will hopefully help players who need some assistance receive it swiftly. We have all fallen victim to occasional laziness from the guards at one point or another! To be honest, if I were to cover all of the changes we would end up with a novel instead of just a Valrei International. You can check out the full list of patch notes here. I also wanted to remind players who’ve been around for quite some time that Malena is looking for images, videos, and interesting memories and stories from Wurmian history to be included in a celebration of 15 years of Wurm Online. You can find more detailed information on what Malena is looking for by checking out the posts below: And last, but not least, a shout out to a community event coming up for the holidays! The fourth annual Lunalong will be hosted by Dracaa next month on Xanadu, for Southern Isles residents. You can check out more details on the official Lunalong forum post below: That’s it for this issue of the Valrei International! I hope you have all enjoyed the festive Halloween events and got some goodies, as well as made progress in some of your skills during the skillgain event.

Made a lot of different barrels of drinks like vodka, whisky, moonshine, gin, brandy and all that, white, red and rice whine. Then a thought wouldn't it be nice to be able to make [bottles] with a [glassblowing kit]. Materials for glass could be charcoal and sand, maybe a little bit of metal for different colours. Or colours of the bottles could be defined by temperature they are made also, in a [glassblowing oven] ? Glassblowing could be a skill or subskill( pottery ?) and to be able to make own bottles and fill them with beverages with your Name on them (Reskal's Moonshine)could need a certain skill level in beverages. Labels would be used in the process of making bottles also. Placed on tables the filled bottles (if clear glass) could show the liquids colour too, same for glasses. In a [bottle rack] you could store filled and labeled bottles to let them age further. Just as an idea, there are for sure more things in this to have.

Foraging gives cacao beans, tea seeds and green coffee beans (bush tiles seem to have better chance). All of them can be planted to pottery planters for mass production. By growing tea seeds and harvesting planters you will get green tea leaves. How to get other tea types was mentioned in above comments, however you will need green tea leaves for all of them. Teas are made in tea pot inside the oven: (white/yellow/brown/green/oolong) tea leaves + water green coffee beans + roasting dish + oven = coffee beans (roasted) coffee beans (roasted) + mortar and pestle = ground coffee beans ground coffee beans + water + coffee ibrik + campfiire = Kahvesi (1:1 ground coffee bean and water ratio by weight) other coffee recipes are know out of the box, just check your in game cooking window.

You are aware, I hope, that isn't only TOY animals that make noises. Cows and sheep are not actually silent in the real world. We would just like that little bit of realism, where they aren't some silent animation. Currently they make a noise when fighting, when dying, and when being branded - as far as I know that's it. Contented cows generally don't moo, granted, but "not contented" could just be that the grass they want to eat is on the other side of a fence or they need milking or they can't see their friend.

Oh I don't think it is people are scared of fighting, I just think that the majority of people on PvE enjoy other aspects of the game as much or more than the combat - as I say, I enjoy the rifts, I enjoy hunting, I agree that some more mobs that are "intermediate" would be welcome and even some harder mobs, designed more for the higher level fighters on the grid to challange, as yes, for some, all but the hardest are AFK kills (I know my hubby was shocked/surprised and kind of pleased when his toon afk'd a wolf the other day as he isn't a fighter at all lol) but on the whole, I would be looking for more adventure based stuff to do with other players, rather than yet another combat situation. It would be nice if we had to gather a group to say find and charm/heal a creature for rewards for example or have to build something together (yes I know we have mission builds and collosi (sp) but you CAN build those alone if you choose), which is why I think something like treasure hunts would be a big win for me.. I am looking for something to bribe my hubby off deed with, that won't involve killing something (or getting killed himself) as he really doesn't like the fighting aspect and will only fight to defend himself, not for "pleasure".

While a feature discussion may be not on the right place here, I must say that I do not appreciate a removal of global spell from the journal. I participated in five global spells for benediction, 3 for each of my priests, two where one of my priests assisted by summoning, or because it was not clear from start that there would be enough faith for the global spell (it was without him, in the end, but he could help with summons). Each of those five mini events was a pleasant experience of cooperation between players. I fail to see where that can be easily replaced.

@Keenanhow about posting the caster and linkers to Twitter? This would allow either myself (since I was mentioning the flaws with the previous list but a willingness to do it) or Stanlee (since he's tried to do it with this thread) to manually approve or tick off people as and when the casts are done. That way, we'd make sure the list is up to date, relevant and people aren't just lingering on it for months after getting the cast done "Stanlee casts rite of spring" + whatever at the end "Aided by X, Y, Z" in a separate tweet made after
  48. 1 point
Said it before in other conversations and will say it again. Goals or quests that require community participation in any game but that can be sabotaged by only 1 player will never be good game design. Case in point, any player with enough alts can sabotage this journal goal or he can by simple ignorance, not announce a cast and leave people angry and dissapointed. Instead of "fixing human behavior" which honestly after the events of the past couple of years, it's pretty clear there's a significant amount of selfish trashy people out there, we should fix the design of the goal itself. I am not a priest nor do I intend to do that particular global cast goal but it relies on the good will of people whilst simultaneously it can be ruined by 1 selfish as*****. It's like those games where at the end of a dungeon or raid, the game design allows one player to ninja loot all the rewards leaving dozens of people dismayed by his behavior. Selfishness aside, this needs to be solved by designing systems so they can't be sabotaged by greed or self interest. This goal relies too much on the (wrong) assumption that all players will find a way to cooperate when it's clearly not the case else the recent conversations in gchat or this thread would have never happened. Fix the goal, you can't fix the players. P.S. I'm not bashing OP's attempt to organize this journal goal. I'm simply pointing out, like the hundreds of players before me, that this is a goal that should have never existed in the first place.

A very brief description of the specifics - apparently we need to find Emoo to tell the full story! I'm not sure if this is the same story or just similar instance of it, but it also involves having a GM have to remove coins from players inventories to keep their client from crashing. This bugfix seems to be the point where the issue was addressed by having a max of 100 items in a container, and this comment in particular is meaty: Do Wurm players ever do anything for a sane reason though? Have you met us??
  50. 1 point
I intentionally phrased it as "tends" and not as "they always do so". Thing is, all it takes is for a quarter of the wurm pop of even 10% to act this way to get this shitty system. It's similar to when WoW classic came out, on some servers I saw how bots were so flagrantly harvesting mineral nodes / herbs / farming certain mobs, that your average player barely had any chance to level up his skills. (also blizzard really dropped the ball at policing bots, some were only banned for 1 week even after video proof, then unbanned and back to their script...lovely company what can I say) Were the bots a very small % of that wow server? Yes. But you have to keep in mind it doesn't take many rotten apples to spoil an entire barrel. I am happy you had good wurm experiences, I truly am, I've had many as well, but I've also seen acts of such selfishness that it left me mind boggled on how people would go to such great lengths just for some in game pixels at the end of the day. My point is not to provide a negative perspective on human morality or exhort how people tend to be more selfish instead of selfless, but you have to keep in mind one thing and that is even with RMT gone, silvers still do have a $ equivalent and I'm pretty sure somewhere, people still do such dealings under the radar. And even if that weren't the case, if no one would engage in such low profile dealings the fact is having a lot of silvers in your bank is still equal to $ since you can pay for a lot of deed upkeep (costs $), you can buy prem (obviously costs $) and other things. A confounded variable might be the fact people aren't even aware how they associate such things with RL money (see my last phrase) My general point is that as long as there's a real life monetary incentive, there will always be a certain class of people trying to game the system as much as possible. Whether by monopoly or by having as much of the dragon market share as possible, the current wurm rule system fosters such behavior and has fostered it for a long time. We might not have wow bots but we do have a psychological - money incentive to not share things with others or play nice. On a side note, there's a nice presentation from a behavioral economist / psychologist on how our behavior changes when we associate things with RL money or not. It's quite enlightening to see how many more people cheat / steal when there's a weaker connection between the stolen item and money (like stealing a can of coke) or when the social norms encourage it in a certain system. Just throwing it out there. I think any MMO should consider behavioral economics when designing mechanics, especially these days when there are so many "pay for advantages" mechanics.
