So I live quite rurally and we had a big storm on 18th July that knackered the roads in my area. I live 40km along a road that doesn't have another way in (by road). It's still impassable 2 months later though the work crews have managed to start working on the far end of it. Anyway, the only way in or out for the time being is by boat, and you can even get cars in and out on a barge service. However, there's not really solid infrastructure around for the barges (this is the first time in at least 20 years the road has been closed for more than a week). To provide a sound landing point for heavy plant etc from the barge at our end of the water-way, they did the most Wurm thing I can think of - dropping dirt to build a wharf...

Xanadu is big. No, really, it's HUGE. This sometimes makes it very time consuming when our friends on other servers want to deliver something to us. To make things quicker and easier, I've been finding or creating highway-connected wagoner drop-off points all around the edge of the island, and I'm going to map them out here, so it's just a quick border hop from the smaller servers to set up a fire-and-forget wagoner delivery to anywhere on this great island. This thread will give explicit directions to the locations of these drop-off points, to make finding them easier. Send your delivery guy here next time you make a big bulk purchase. The idea is to find or place wagoner containers directly on the coast, and as close to the server border as possible, to keep travel times to an absolute minimum. The containers are all placed no more than one tile from the water's edge, so people can show up and drag their crates directly from their ship into the container without having to bring a cart or wagon and draft animals, which is a pain in the neck. I've done a total island circumnavigation, and these are the locations I've found or created. I'll add more as I find or build them. Feel free to suggest locations in your replies. Southeast (Esteron) Drop-Off Located at the red X on these maps, this drop-off point can be easily identified by its proximity to the bridge and the two clearly-labeled horse statues. It's located one tile from the water, allowing crates to be unloaded directly from your boat into the wagoner's container. Southwest (Newspring) Drop-Off Point This one is helpfully located next to an obelisk named "Slithering Challenge" and a couple of noticeable tunnels. Again, head to the red X on the map. Center-West (Crafter's Legion Market) Drop-Off Point This one's located on-deed at Crafter's Legion Market, courtesy of mayor Martynas. The deed is easily spotted from the ocean because of all the market stalls. There are two containers directly on the waterfront. Northwest (Glasshollow) Drop-off Point Located on a bit of nondescript coastal road between Vanaheim and Rainbow Dreams. Look for the two horse statues. North (Mt Coalition) Drop-off Point Another fairly nondescript coastal road, about 60 tiles west of Mt Coalition. Again, look for the appropiately named horse statue. North (Nilfhelmr) Drop-off Point There's currently a half-finished colossus here, along with a bunch of animal crates. There's an obelisk and an archery tower not far to the east. North (Monkey Caverns) Drop-off point This one was created by whoever owns the underground deed Monkey Caverns (thanks!). The tunnels are hard to miss, and the container is right there on the shore. East (Syndicate) Drop-off Point Located on the northeast corner of a flattened area north of Syndicate. East (Hollow Island) Drop-off Point Located at the west side of the bridge leading to Hollow Island. Thanks to Dumbo for supplying some of the compasses I used to build some of these waypoints.

Well that's a hell of a post! Beautifully written, and summing things up so well. If only this could happen But damn, it's easier said than done: the risk is the devs do put some time and effort into Epic, only to end up right back where we are now in a few years time. And with a lot less patience. Maybe it's time to bite the bullet and accept that Epic is never going to be anywhere near as popular as Freedom, and therefore it might be best if players could participate in both Epic and Freedom as the fancy takes them? I've spoken to a couple of players on Freedom recently, who say they have no intention of ever leaving Freedom, but that they would also quite like to visit and explore Epic, and spend a bit of time there. So while I wish things would work as you said, realistically it might be time for a more flexible approach? That said, there's no reason why Epic can't be unique. They should bring back the Valrei mobs for starters. Sorcery could be expanded, as could perhaps meditation (paths only available on Epic). They could bring back player demigods (not gods) as a function of the scenario system, without the ability to follow them (directly), but give rewards like CR bonuses and maybe the odd demigod spell that only they get (for each ascension). And yeah, why not have 50-hit moon-metal veins spawn? That'd raise a few eyebrows. It's not like any of this can imbalance what happens on Freedom as no gear can ever go back (and nor should it). There are ways to improve the attractiveness of Epic, no doubt. And keep it unique. But I also think that Epic would benefit from "tourism" from Freedom, in a similar way that some places benefit from tourism in RL.

Dear Celebration, I was just looking back at my pm logs and reading ones from my first days of my game life here in the world of Wurm. There was on in particular that stood out to me. In my first days here in Wurm I met a player that encumber all of the hearts of the community and was one of the kindest players that I have ever met. His name was McWolfy. He once said that in the next couple of years when I gain 99 in skills and I am telling people my stories, he asked me to mention him. So that is exactly what I am doing. Although I am not going to just mention him in passing, I am going to glorify him as if he was one of the gods to show you just how spectacular her really is. I have not yet skilled 99 in any of my skills but after reading the pm's I started to think. I have always stayed friends with McWolfy and he will always stay in my friends list, even when I have 190 friends in said list. But I have been thinking he has not been on for about the last three months and before I forget him I thought that I would let every know about this wonderful person that I once met. He has long since left the server of Celebration. He once said the following: "Someone somewhere needs a helping hand and I'm sailing to help them . . . thank you but I don't need luck, I'm Wolfers McWolf" - McWolfy If you are out ever sailing and cross paths with him at all in our beautiful world of Wurm just remember he is an ally and wont hurt you but will try everything in his power to help you. Because of his recent departure from the server of Celebration he has not been active for the last couple of months and Before he is forgotten and leaves our hearts to go and take care of his real world problems I wanted to advise all my community members here in Celebration of this wonderful man and friend of mine and I hope you too one day will be able to meet him and just see for your self the wonderful power that he has and if you are one that has been lucky enough to have met him, like I have, then congratulations. Wolfers McWolfy of The Eternal City Of Fo. We love you and appreciate everything you have done for us and if conveniently you happen to see this post here then please come back to us. But if not thank you for everything! ~Zachariah

It's a sad day when someone has to preemptively say they don't want to get political when talking about someone dying of a disease. I didn't know him or follow him, but RIP & I'm sure he'll be missed.

I think the key word here is "put some time and effort". Epic died off precisely because of that sentence. They only put some time and effort. But not a commited dev or two to deliver periodic updates. On Epic in its last years, the updates specifically for epic came at 8-12 month intervals. The rest of the content was made solely for SFI / Freedom. Epic was largely ignored and its combat issues, its pvp issues, bugs, exploits unadressed created a snowball effect which made players leave in droves. You either commit to something or don't. If you only put "some time and effort" you'll get the results of that half commitment, aka you'll reap what you sow. If the devs want to do something about Epic then they need a dev that understands pvp, understands its core issues, has a vision to fix them longterm and can listen to player feedback when something is terribly broken and a fix is needed in the following weeks NOT years. Many Epic issues were fixed years later after they were reported. One of the core issues about epic right now is the 1 way skill transfer. As long as we're playing "skill favorites" for Freedom, aka anything grinded on Freedom gets copied to Epic but not viceversa, NO ONE will play on Epic. Decide if you want to keep this system or not. This is the main issue. Any other "visions" or "implementations" for Epic won't do anything if you don't address this first. Assuming this gets fixed via a 2 way skill transfer, the 2nd issue is the "barriers to pvp entry" which let's face it are large. I think a lot of the vets can agree that there's too many buffs and bonuses that old timers have against new people. It's not ok to spend months and months grinding out skills/ stats/ gear ql just to be able to pvp on Epic. I'd look at meditation bonuses, moon metal saturation on Epic (it's oversaturated, we have moon metal tools at this point), priest balancing, boat fights (people on supreme sailboats get a massive advantage vs regular sailboats due to speed). Just my two cents.

At the moment NFI and SFI are separate, there’s no bank interaction at all, adding Epic to the mix would act like a back door to that separation. Since Epic and Freedom banks are linked, it would also permit accounts from SFI to transfer to NFI via Epic. So probably an idea with unintentional consequences, or do you want accounts with high skills setting up on Defiance after literally years of playing on Freedom, Chaos or Epic? One of the reasons NFI is a separate cluster is to make sure that as much as possible everyone started with a clean slate, not just warping in with high end crafting or fighting skills and pwning the noobs.
  11. 2 points
I am implacably opposed to being able to sail back and forth from Epic, it’s a separate cluster for a reason, and should never be joined or merged. The reason why should be obvious. It further devalues Epic as a unique cluster, blithely sailing home after raiding with your cargo of ill gotten gains to sell in safety? It’s been a long lasting issue with Chaos. No. Epic needs it’s uniqueness back, not to be further integrated with Freedom until nothing is left at all.

The Full Novel has been removed for everyone's mental health. T.L.D.R. Summary Darwin has worn out any semblance of a welcome here as we have observed him for a long time doing nothing but intentionally inciting the community and causing headaches. He has not been an active member and simply logs in and bothers people, then logs out. We have given Darwin plenty of chances to improve his ways at the recommendation of others who had long believed he could improve, but as they say, insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. Beyond trolling one of our public global chat channels, Darwin was also attacking and abusing Wurm Online team members who were only trying to help him avoid violating our rules even further. It was long past time to put an end to Darwin's foolish behavior with a permanent ban from Wurm Online since he has made it abundantly clear that he has no intention of actually enjoying Wurm Online, and he has zero respect for moderation or our community. Thoroughly unimpressed with complaints about and second-guessing of the judging. The nature of a design competition is that there is always a subjective element, and they were the judges and you weren't so unless you are alleging that there was some kind of impropriety - for which you have evidence - then please try to keep your commentary supportive. How do you think you would feel to win a creative contest and then your own peers griping and moaning that someone else should have won? With friends like these... Anyway, from me, congratulations to all the winners, placers and honourable mentions. In fact, congratulations if you even had something you thought worth submitting - your creativity and implementation exceeds mine immeasurably. My main Wurm house is basically a big green box, and I am in awe of what others can do creatively, in Wurm and in real life. Well done, all.

When making salt if you create one batch of it through the cauldron you can then take the already hot cauldron with the water remaining and use the cauldron to "fill" from any salty water source and the water in the cauldron stays boiling so when you throw it in to a heat source it instantly makes salt.

I think (or rather hope) the idea here would be to get Epic into a state where it's viable at least. Like you said in your last line: I swore I'd never leave Epic, but I now live/skill on Freedom too, precisely because I'm worried about how Epic will go, and I'd rather take a bad hit now than a fatal one down the road. I figured it's just safer to do it this way as I can take my skills from Freedom to Epic, but not vice-versa. The thing is, those players who do actually live/skill on Epic, and don't visit Freedom, are getting a really raw deal right now, and this is only going to get progressively worse if things are left as is. I understand their dilemma as I just had to make that difficult decision myself. So at the bare minimum, if the devs can get Epic to a state where it can continue indefinitely, and those players "stuck" there now get some kind of deal they can live with, I'd be ok with that. Basically that means some kind of fair skill transfer, even if it's just a one-off, with a warning that "This is the last time we do this: proceed at your own risk." Anything beyond that, which might actually attract a few more Freedomers to venture over, even if only occasionally, then I'll happily take that too. But I'm not expecting the devs to start going hammer and tongs on some Epic overhaul, and I definitely don't think the devs are expecting to draw large numbers back to Epic. People should be realistic about the future of Epic. Nonetheless, it would be great to see this thing finally resolved in a way where Epic survives long-term, and the die-hards that belong there don't have this hideous dilemma hanging over them like the Sword of Damocles.

I have seen your idea of a tavern or inn work on a WU server- now sadly closed- that was advertised as 'role-play'. Players spent many evenings socialising and 'acting' and of course drinking the wares on sale there. It created a warm, cosy atmosphere and became the 'hub' of the server for many. There were also NPC staff in the bar so that even when no other players were in the inn there was still some feeling of activity. I do not see many people getting into role-play in the main Wurm servers and that I fear will be the difficulty for your idea to take-off here.

I have added a boat tunnel and finished the land canal so that all boats can pass from Rainbow Lake to the west coast. I am still putting buoys up to mark the channel so that will take time since you can only put one Buoy up a day. Boat Canal starts on the west coast at [150, 830] [415, 830]. Turns South at [415, 830] [415, 850] The surface canal that can be seen is now connected and full dug out as I said so that is now active.

To explain a little, epic skill gain, that is the amount of skill you gain from actions, is 2x. The Epic effective skill curve is an entirely different mechanism, depending on your skill it allows you to make, or do things which would normally require higher skills, it’s intended to have a greater effect at lower skill levels, and slowly tapers off around 98 or so. For instance, a player with 36 prospecting has an effective prospecting skill of just over 60, meaning they can estimate how much ore is left in a vein. Similarly someone with 36 weapon smithing can produce weapons up to about 60-70 ql. Both the 2x skill gain and effective skill curve serve to boost low skilled players, allowing them to participate much faster than other clusters. Your skills rise faster, and what you are able to produce is higher quality than it would be at bare numeric skill levels. on top of this there’s also the faster action timers as well, each action is noticeably faster than Freedom. So, faster skillgain, higher ql, faster production and imping. Ironically this is also Epic’s biggest problem, if people expect a simple, and fair, transfer of skill from Epic to Freedom, then they’ll be disappointed, having gone through one skills transfer I can tell you, it wasn’t smooth and easy, and since then Epic has a different skilling system on top of the 2x plus curve plus timers, it’s further complicated by the difference between how you gain skill on freedom, and how it’s gained on Epic, any formula for transferring skill gains between clusters will be insanely complex, and as always, prone to errors when all of that is impacted by skill reductions thru death as well, (yes, we die on Epic, and lose skills the same way everyone else does, to PvP and silly errors with dragons etc).

Once upon a time, Rolf conceived Epic as a standalone PvP cluster, with Unique mechanisms that only Epic had, partly as an enticement to play there, part of the concept Rolf had in his mind. Terraforming events, triggered by Scenarios, which were influenced by player interaction via missions. Unique Valrei monsters, also triggered by missions and scenarios. The ability to become a Player God, and have priests with different mixtures of spells than the standard 4 gods of Freedom. And for a while, things were good, Epic was different from Freedom indeed, but slowly and surely those unique Epic only things were leaked to Freedom, devaluing Epic's uniqueness, some features were removed altogether, such as Valrei monsters, terraforming events, and player gods. in the end, Epic has become standardised, with only some of the skilling and player progression mechanics in place. Now it's all that Epic has, the slightly faster skilling, and different skillgain mechanism, which is frankly mot enough to make Epic unique really, it's more and more like a WU knockoff clone of Epic now. What Epic needs is true uniqueness, things that Freedom does not have, something to once again give Epic a reason to play on. Rather than those who play there feeling they are haunting an old cluster with reminders of what we used to have, in the form of old overgrown craters and cracks, and the occasional Valrei mob huddled in a cave waiting for the end to come, alone now, because it's brothers and cousins no longer visit Epic either. Epic need players, players need reasons to come, and stay. We don't need reasosn to visit so we can take our skills back to Freedom, we don't need to be able to take our old and worn out tools and weapons back, we don't need skill or item transfers to make Epic life better, we need an better life IN Epic. Ask not what Epic can offer Freedom, rather ask, what can Epic offer me that Freedom cannot.

seems kind of pointless to put work in for pvp on epic years after it needed it when there's other more populated pvp servers they're already neglecting as it is, are they expecting to draw some massive crowd of people back (enough to sustain population, <50 players on a server and everyone but the most dedicated leave because finding pvp isn't worth the time, and then no new players stick around because there's barely any vets to help them/do typical mmo stuff), or are they hoping to draw people from freedom into a pvp themepark where you get rewards to take home or something? i'd hope it's already proven that no skill or items on epic going back to freedom makes it unattractive to basically anyone who plays on freedom, and even makes people who lived on epic instead play on freedom because there's no risk of their skills getting stuck on a cluster they might not play in the future.

Connection by sea with NFI. I have suggested several times to add seasonal islands that would have different seasons than the current islands in the NFI. On each island, different plants and animals could appear as a unique attraction attracting players. The biggest problem in my opinion is PvP. The simplest solution would be to set up several relationship statuses between kingdoms, and by default each kingdom would be at peace with others. Suggested statuses: - friendly relations - players of both kingdoms can cross the border and will not be attacked, they can gather resources, hunt and trade, but they cannot build or terraform anything in territory of a foreign kingdom, - peace - both kingdom players are free to travel and trade, but cannot hunt or gather anything, - embargo - no entry or trade for players from an embargoed kingdom, - war - players may cross the border but will be attacked and may die. Changing first 3 statuses is free, but declaring war costs and every day when the kingdom is at war, players must deliver goods they produce to the capital. There could be a restriction where it is not possible to change status from peace to war and the kingdom must first set embargo for a period of time, say RL week, so that players from the kingdom to be attacked can prepare for war. When war is declared, both kings gather their knights to set their status as the defender of kingdom, that is, they become PvP players. So they can die and lose items, and their deeds can be invaded by the opponent. Players who prefer to play PvE are still forced to pay goods to capital, but cannot lose anything during the war and their deeds cannot be attacked, but they can be killed outside of their deeds. The type and quality of required goods that each player sends to capital is random and forced by game. If one of kingdoms fails to pay all the required goods for 3 days, it loses war economically. The winner receives goods sent to the opposing capital and can distribute them among the knights who participated in the war. Alternatively alliance leaders can designate an area to build a fortress, during a war alliance members may store goods in fortress instead of sending them to capital. During war fortress is exposed to raids and if it falls, goods it contains can be stolen by the opponent. In this way, each PvP and PvE player would be involved in a war, but how much someone sacrifices and is willing to lose would depend only on him and in each war he could make a different decision. EDIT: As long as alliance fortress is standing, deeds of members of that alliance, who changed status to PvP, cannot be invaded.

Some players will live on Epic and some on Freedom; that's not likely to change, and doesn't need to. However, currently, the way I understand it, even though you technically have the same toon, really you have two separate characters. Portalling to Epic is really pausing your main game and starting over on a difference cluster with different rules. I can understand why people don't want to go back and forth. However, is Epic really unattractive or is it being being allowed to "die on the vine" through lack of promotion and lack of even access from NFI? From my experience, I knew nothing about Epic except that there were these things called "Epic Portals" which I sort of took to be some kind of mission system for Wurm. I was months into the game, and these fora, before I started to get an inkling of what existed as Epic. Mostly, I saw forum questions about when Elevation would be reset or something - which to me WAS a disincentive. I was curious, but if I had to go through effectively a character reset AND a possible server reset, I wasn't diving in. Some kind of transfer of something should be possible; the question is what? Skill? Gear? Resources? Special "trophy" items? I do understand the issue of skill transfer being so difficult as to be essentially unmanageable but skillgain is not the sum of what is valuable about Wurm. In point form; Epic should be promoted Epic should be accessible from ALL other server/clusters Something should transfer to Epic Something should transfer from Epic. All fairly generic, I know, but a kernel for discussion in some semblance of a structured manner. From the first pair of points the obvious question is "How" and from the second pair the obvious question is "What" (with "how" also to be addressed).

I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but for the effort this would entail wouldn't it be better to just revamp the chatsystem entirely and allow arbitrary groups of people to form/join as many publicly-listed/private channels as they want without worrying about village, alliance, or even server/cluster?

This is a fair assessment, however I feel we need to approach the VI as a team going forward. Being a small team, there will be times during the year where development slows considerably as people take vacations. During these times, we'll likely share less about development and more about what the team is up to. Even if it's just saying "Hey! It's vacation time here, what are your plans?" or something of that nature. The point being that you won't be left wondering whether or not we're still here, as has been the case during the last few months. I also know that we're tight-lipped about what we're working on usually until it's ready for release. This is a learned behavior from things having been promised in the past, only to not be delivered in a reasonable time frame or sometimes changed completely. I think we need to get better at this, even if we disclose that whatever it is we're teasing is subject to change during development. It's something we're discussing internally and I hope the results of that discussion show in future editions of the VI.
  45. 1 point
Not to be the downer here, but at this point I'll opt to be sceptic until proven otherwise: I hope the talk with demona was less like "hey, try to post a VI once a month, k?" and more like "hey, we the dev team will actually try to give you info that you can share with the community. The idea is one VI a month, k?" Because let's be real, you're making it sound awfully a lot like it'll be demona responsibility to deliver communication with us players, but unless you guys fix one of the core issues of not giving demona info to share, then she's just going to be sitting there taking the heat of the players while not having anything to communicate like the last few months. I wish I didn't have to have these cynical thoughts, but I can't stop them until I get proven that I can. This hurts my hope and overall enjoyment.

Lot's of dog's and people to greet. A giant ocean to swim in. Little fish to chase in the shallows on the bay side, oh and plenty of food to be eaten. Here are some pictures of his magnificent trip. His trip to Fire Island on a ferry. Lot's of sleeping to be had. visiting some family friends and sitting on their boat. He loves to sit at the table so he can look at all the food! Running in the ocean and finally after a long day of activity, taking a nice rest on the boat.
