Let me start by saying this is my opinion and not a "Yes" or "No" to the idea. I want to be open and honest about this. First, the transfer back in 2017 was terrible. The math was good, but the implementation was horrible, and I'm still getting tickets passed to me to fix people who had issues with it. To this day, I have a docker container with the databases loaded from before the transfer to verify what people were supposed to have. We did a terrible job, and I'm not afraid to say that. (Edit: On further reflection, we didn't do a terrible job. We did what we could with what we had at the time, and there was no indication of anything going wrong based on the data we had. I'm being too hard on us here, but I'm also leaving that part in because transparency is good.) It was so awful because it was a one-time database modification based on a sample set of data that proved inaccurate and did not represent the whole set. And it was an extensive sampling, but the problem came from other bugs that caused incorrect data that we were relying on to complete the proper calculations. So, I do not personally want to go down that road again. Now that leaves us with an in-code solution. Here's the rub, though: It would have to be some conversion based on the epic curve during transfers, and transfers are delicate as is. We did something similar to this for Jackal, and it resulted in us having to do the first (and so far only (knocking on wood)) rollback in my tenure as a developer. That's nearly six years. We eventually got it mostly correct, but it wasn't perfect, and the code wouldn't translate well here because it went off of skill ticks. What we did was record your skill ticks, not the amount of skill you gained. We then applied those ticks at the Freedom skill rate, giving you skill on Freedom for your work on Jackal. The problem with this approach is that anyone who has skilled up on Epic since 2017 will be out of luck as we have no way of tracking those individual ticks. Now we need to write new code into server transfers to allow for skill transfer back to Freedom. Again, I'm not saying "No." Nor can I say "Yes" as that's not my call individually. But if we tried to do it, it would take a significant amount of time and still leave us with the central issue: Epic doesn't seem to attract people. Yes, people wouldn't be "wasting" time on Epic with skill transfers, but since the gains would have to be on par with Freedom gains, that also means there's still no incentive to play there. So we need to figure out that bit first, in my opinion, before we address skills at all. The TL;DR for those who hate my books is that skill transfer is very hard and still doesn't provide an incentive to play on Epic. In my opinion, we should focus on that incentive first, and then we can look into skill transfers. As for shutting down Epic, there's no reason to do this. If we were still on Hetzner, there would be a financial reason to consider it, but since we now load balance game servers across several hosts, the server costs aren't as much of an issue.

You're kidding, right? If someone doesn't want to read a page of bugfixes, they can just not read it lmfao. That doesn't mean they should just not make a list, screwing over those of us who do want to read all about it.

False. More detailed patch notes!!!! Let us see the CVS checkin messages! (We all know wurm is still using CVS instead of SVN or GIT) Go back to posting the art changelog as well so we can look back and see when things were added to the game like we used to be able to.

Look we get a ton of cool weather and sky effects during the day it would be nice to get something at night, whether it be random shooting stars or UFOs - and no before the usual people jump down my throat I mean like little balls of light randomly moving in the sky as a rarity not actual UFOs and aliens. Just something a little more dynamic at night. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Please for the benefit of us Freedomers, please can someone draw up a list of reasons why any of us should visit/move to Epic? Please separate the benefits into Existing Benefits, and Proposed Incentives. At the moment I can't see myself or most people I know playing on Epic, but maybe that's because: 1) the existing benefits of Epic are not clear to the average Freedomer or there are benefits we don't hear about 2) nobody has thought of any potential incentives which could be implemented to attract more people to Epic. Existing Benefits I know about: Increased skillgain (a turn-off for those 'hard core grinding' Freedomers) Slight chance of PVP (arguably not considered a positive by most on Freedom) Faster Journal completion (not everyone uses their journal) Proposed Incentives: I can't imagine going to Epic as long is it not possible to bring anything back (reward). If Epic had the ability to bring things back: a new resource, such as a material, tile type, harvestable fruit, game animal or metal vein a challenge or maze deed with a trophy such as a title, medal or other reward an event like an impalong, a party, or treasure/hunting/fighting event with prizes we can keep More people might visit. Basically we have no *proof* we have ever visited Epic, except "so and so looks like she has blood from XYZ".

Rowing boat should be turned into a cargo rowing boat that can be loaded with crates, even large crate, creature cage, oven or forge. But rowing costs stamina and when character is at zero stamina boat stops and you have to wait for regeneration and give command to keep going again, so it would be boat for loading and unloading large ships in places with shallow water on shore. Longer journeys would be very tedious and rowing boat should not be able to cross maps on its own. Instead of loading rowing boat into ship's cargo hold, it could be visible on deck. Additionally, each vessel with a deeper draft should be able to tow a vessel with a shallower draft using a rope. In this way, shipbuilders could take a sailing boat or a larger ship with them to return from another map.

This point keeps getting made, and it's a fair point. Why bother with Epic when we can live on Freedom and go to Chaos for PvP? Except Epic and Chaos are different: Chaos is small. Epic is big. You've got the respective kingdom home server where players can live and defend, which suits one style of play. Then you've got Elevation (with HotA) that all factions are effectively competing for, which suits a riskier style of play. I suppose Elevation is the equivalent of Chaos? Then you've got the enemy kingdoms' servers to raid which is about as spicy as it gets. It's a really nice design, and players ought to appreciate it more. On Chaos you can flee to Freedom and hide. On Epic there is no retreat past your home server - nowhere is entirely safe. Your boats, wheelie-vehicles, animals, buildings, bank account, and anything else that is too big or heavy to store on toons is always vulnerable to being pilfered, abused, killed, or vandalised. Chaos uses PMKs, and some players prefer the template MR vs JK vs HotS format. Not to say that PMKs aren't perfectly viable and fun, but Epic and Chaos are just different in this respect. The current skill system on Epic rewards you for doing constructive things that you're supposed to be doing, rather than burning time doing pointless things you would never ordinarily do (other than purely to increase skill). The mission system on Epic can get you the full range of sorcery items, and influencing/meddling with the gods is interesting in its own right. Sure, players can no longer become gods themselves, which was the ultimate goal, but this system could potentially yet be revamped. There is no Curve on Chaos, and the Curve definitely makes it easier for noobs to get up to speed, and even do the full-on self-sufficient survivalist-hermit-thing if that's their bag. The rapid timers on Epic make it significantly faster to replace gear, vehicles, and buildings, among other things. Horses gestate very fast on Elevation (hours not days). You're likely to risk more if you know everything is easier to replace, whereas Chaos is effectively the same slow grind and long wait that Freedom is. These factors combined tend to attract some players to Epic rather than Chaos, and will generally give a different vibe to PvP adventures on Epic I guess.

So who else preordered New World and is excited as hell for the 28th?

I have never really understood "I only win if someone else loses". It's why I prefer to play co-operatively instead of competitively. Yes, it is nice to have distinctive stuff, but if it is only to show it off in "I have it and you don't/can't" kind of way then I don't see the point. If it is disctinctive, rare, difficult to or expensive to get, then it become aspirational, which is a good thing. If it is impossible to get, it isn't doing anyone any good.

This is a fair assessment, however I feel we need to approach the VI as a team going forward. Being a small team, there will be times during the year where development slows considerably as people take vacations. During these times, we'll likely share less about development and more about what the team is up to. Even if it's just saying "Hey! It's vacation time here, what are your plans?" or something of that nature. The point being that you won't be left wondering whether or not we're still here, as has been the case during the last few months. I also know that we're tight-lipped about what we're working on usually until it's ready for release. This is a learned behavior from things having been promised in the past, only to not be delivered in a reasonable time frame or sometimes changed completely. I think we need to get better at this, even if we disclose that whatever it is we're teasing is subject to change during development. It's something we're discussing internally and I hope the results of that discussion show in future editions of the VI.

Well if we aren't closing it down we must address one of the MAIN issues WHY no one plays there. Aka the 1 way skill transfer. Realistically all the people I've talked to, Epic and Freedom players alike agree it's the main reason why they don't play there. All the players on Epic right now are either the hardcore vets or people coming over from Freedom to grind journal goals on easy mode with the speed timers we have there. Respectfully disagree, but one of the reasons f2p players got "nerfed" on Epic was due to the heavy alt abuse. Free alts were used to scout enemy locals, to infiltrate villages, to add speed to sailboats and knarrs, etc. Making home servers on Epic f2p will just bring back troubles. I'd focus on the core reason why ALL epic players left when the skill transfer kicked in, aka it was only 1 way. If you want to motivate people to play on Epic, read on the threads on what Epic people have been asking for years now: 2 way skill transfer, it doesn't have to be 1:1, but even keeping 25%-30% of what you grind on Epic ported to Freedom is better than the current situation. This really is the crux of the issue here. Wurm is a game designed around the idea of longevity and that you keep what you earn. If you tell players of an entire cluster all their stuff / skills is isolated from the rest of the playerbase while at the same time SFI can copy over skills to Epic, it basically deletes any reason or motivation to play there. Want people to play Epic? Give them something to transfer back.

Because the rowboat is smaller and therefore more reasonable for loading on a ship. The caravel would be big enough for the small sailboat, but why build a mechanic for only one of the ship classes? Navigating shallows Helping newbies relocate with their boat Selling a boat with only one round-trip Buying a boat with only one round-trip Getting rowboats all packed away out of sight, but still available at need/want. EDIT: added Recover your ship when you die at sea; row out, board your ship, load the rowboat, go home all happy. (Of course, if you already have a rowboat loaded this could be problematic - unless you can tow one). Drop off lifeboats or "pontoon" boats.

But I do hope that if we do meet you will say hello. If we don’t respond immediately it could be that we are experiencing a life threatening situation or frantically *ahem* tactically running away. Using a pulpit could increase valid listener range, by cross-referencing QL of furniture and Preaching skill. (No change to Faith gain mechanics) Using a lectern could boost skill-gain in Preaching when confessing Followers. (No change to Alignment gain mechanics) Examine could show playername and length-of-time-since last sermon in-range Aesthetically, both could have banners that change colour to reflect the deity of the last sermon preached within valid-Listener range. No banner, if never in range of a sermon, or kicked.

My first 100 foals after the patch tell me the following: 1. We are still being short changed 5 points from our max cap 2. Custom building still seems to be impossible due to categories and dominance, mixing mum with ab and dad with cd will not result in a foal with abcd 3. Misc spattering after dominant traits have been assigned is still a thing 4. Draft traits seem to be randomly showing up on speed foals 5. Colours randomness is no better this is just one example its not only the one type of draft that is popping in

Are you sure this is true? Epic certainly attracts me, for the most part, except that the whole "you can neither take nor bring back ANYTHING, including character gains" repels me more than the rest attracts me. As a die-hard explorer, I already know that I will have very little to show for my expeditions. However, having put in the work (and frankly relied on generosity) to be sufficiently well-equipped to travel the wilder places with only a little concern for safety (and able to take relevant precautions at need), while I would LOVE to explore Epic, I don't want to arrive there naked and helpless and have to do re-do all that non-exploring stuff just to get to the exploring bit, and then have zero to show for it. I can appreciate what you are saying regarding transfers, but the lack of transfer and the lack of attraction for Epic are not two separate and unrelated issues, at least to me.

Yes to loading a rowing boat onto a corbita or bigger, and to loading a sailing boat onto a cog or bigger. This is such a practical suggestion, both for delivering boats and for allowing people to travel from ship to shore in areas with shallow bays

+1 It would be nice not to have to build a box with a door around a ladder opening just to be able to lock it off. A simple hatch door that could be locked would be sooo much better!

Today is our 2nd monthiversary! To celebrate, I am releasing a limited edition coin collection for anyone who has played before I wrote this (it is okay if you ask me for it late). Each coin will be silver value, but of "electrum" material. It will be named after whoever I give it to. If you are named Lowkey, it will be named "Coin of Lowkey". I will give it to whoever wants it, but in case I miss you saying as much, you can tell me on the celebration discord channel would like to receive it. You will probably find that even if you don't personally care to have a collectible coin, someone else does.

Considering it's been less than 24 hours since Keenan addressed the much complained about poor/nonexistent communication, I certainly hope there are no uncommunicated changes. It would definitely make the "and we will await more feedback from you before we decide on future tweaks to this system." part somewhat difficult. p.s. I would love to read not one, but multiple pages of patchnotes

CONGRATS TO ALL THE WINNERS!!!! I LOVE YOUR INGENUITY~~~!!!! and now i have ideas too 🙂 I have a saying and maybe you can use it too. "Hope for the best be prepared for the worst." The idea is why get worked up over something you cannot control. So do prepare how you can, and if there is nothing you can do about it. You, as you said, have mad your displeasure noted. But TBF the devs NEVER release info willingly, so you cannot claim to know whats going on. You can only, like always, just speculate. So nothing as i see it has really changed for you. 1.easy on gear is meant to be unlikely to pass on, it creates a market/economy that thrives because not everyone has one AND its unlikely to pass making them worth getting. If you look at it though the way things are phrased it seems to be more likely to pass in certain situations. so it might be a boon. 2.It means that, if i understand correctly...the base pair animals having the same traits as each other become dominant. Just like with people and their kids. A blue eyes person with a brown eye person has a 1/4 chance to have blue eyes but two parents with blues eyes makes the trait dominant. they will never tell you WHAT they fixed...just that they fixed it...been part of the game for 12 years. 3. this is just fear based on nothing....wait for the patch and figure it out like we always do. 4. yes, they were but they were tweak here obviously something wasn't working correctly. and not at all, unless you are on CAD as i suspect all other servers still have spawned horses....so plenty to nab when sailing from server to server. 5. Again you are guessing here, what i think it means is the base pairs traits if they are the same become dominant whereas one parent and another with different traits will likely not pass on the dads traits that are random and lesser. I.E. they both have lightning speed but dad has a rare "unbelievably fast" trait. Because only 1 parent has the trait its now recessive trait. Then add to that most foals gain stats from mom as the main indicator been that way since forever. My guess is they'll be adding more traits not less. overall you are probably correct as they make the patch notes as general as possible to not givew away any changes, thus it seems the same. Also, it makes perfect sense to tweak the previous patch fixes if they found something didnt work as intended and now they know what it is and how to fix it(one hopes). That IS a distinct possibility...people also didnt like the idea that the earth was round or it revolved around the sun and not the sun around it...new things take time to adjust too. You all already know i have no love for DEVs or A fire bit of the staff and that ill be quitting the 28th. So i am by no means a fan boi of the game. Just give it a chance cista, write down all the issues you find and any complaints you have after a few months and put here the issues you have. that way the DEVs can look into it and fix it...but youll prolly sadly get the same general patch notes when they do lol.
