Festival of the Veil (Samhain/Halloween festival and Impalong) October 24-30th 2021 (ended) Greetings Fellow NFI Guys and Ghouls, Its your friendly Cathedral Crypt Keeper here, I'm just dieing with excitement to invite you to one of the first Norther Freedom Isle Impalong. The Zombies and I will be hard at work getting everything ready including this post, keep an eye on this page for updates. What's an Impalong? It's a community event/festival that's hosted by someone on their deed, often times they have themes to match the season, holiday, or hold some special meaning to the host. The word impalong was created long before i became a wurmian, but it refers to the action of gathering and improving items for your fellow Wurmian, it is an event where crafters and priests from across Wurm join together to improve/enchant other players gear for free. Everyone is welcome to work on their skills at the event. In addition to the imping/enchanting, there are various other things such as games and events, prize giveaways, contests, and sometimes even GM's drop in to spawn a few mobs on unsuspecting Festival-goers. Location (where to find us) The cathedral is on the western shore of the heart shaped bay on cadence at map coordinates G23 just north of Broken Heart Bay Event Schedule (all times are U.S. central time zone) Oct 24th 12am gates open to public Oct 25th - 1v1 Tournament Begins Oct 26th - Fishing Contest Oct 27th - Scavenger Hunt Oct 28th - Rose Garden Maze opens Oct 29th Costume contest Oct 30th Bonfire and Closing ceremony The Discord Channel We use this for everything Closed till next year The Deed The Community Workshop (the impalong facility) The Pilgrim's Rest Inn Events The Rules Materials Provided (Donations are welcome and greatly appreciated) Event Staff (PM one of the people listed below when they are online or in local for refueling forges, returning your items, getting you more imping material, and check in at the inn.) more info to come soon

the main reason i don't attend fights at rifts anymore is because of people "tagging" a huge mass of mobs then running them all the way back to the fences so that they can quickly drop aggro, it causes a huge swarm of mobs at the gates that then proceed to turn the rift into a gore fest where i end up spending more time bandaging than enjoying the fight, and i am not a slouch at fighting having 73 skill and yes i am guilty of hitting several enemies in my vacinity to up my count but i try and deal with the enemy i targeted first. There needs to be changes and i really think that one change should be if you leave the rift by going through a fence to drop aggro any tags you did should be nullified. i think that we could plan a better way of fighting with the tanks doing their job the healers healing and us dps fighters assisting the tanks like we should do intstead of rushing around the battlefield to try and hit as many creatures as you can

Don't PVP myself, but do Lib priests have, or are they getting, a Genesis equivelant on PVP? If not, it would seem those with access to a Fo priest will have a definite advantage when it comes to breeding horses, this seems like a balance issue to me?

Hello, Wurmians! I'm excited to bring another sneak peak along for this issue of the Valrei International, introducing few new items being added in with the upcoming Animal Update to make feeding your pets easier. Maybe you live in a dwarven-inspired underground village, and your grazers are unable to find grass tiles to graze on and need to be fed with piles and in hitching posts. Or, if you are a creature collector like I am, you're probably tired of hand feeding your non-grazing critters or throwing their food into piles on the ground. Countless times I've been swiped at by my hostile pets (Didn't they ever hear "Don't bite the hand that feeds you?") while trying to drop some tasty morsels into their pens. I'm happy to say that those days have come to an end! Get ready for a much easier.... Feeding Time! Introducing Hay Stacks, Pet Bowls and Feeding Troughs! These handy containers are perfect for popping into pens and enclosures to make sure everyone's well fed for a longer period and (bonus!) the ground isn't cluttered with food piles. Hay stacks will be perfect for your underground and indoor stables and grazer pens. Bowls and troughs will hold any food items edible by animals, so you can feed meat eaters, herbivores, and omnivores with one container. These new feeding items also have a fancy new mechanic to keep your pets from gathering on the same tile around them. When creatures get hungry, they will walk to the food container, eat, and then return to their original position. This can be seen in the video below: Better Breeding As mentioned before, there is a rework to traits that will provide more benefits to careful breeding of your creatures. 23 new traits have been added, and traits now belong to particular categories with changes to how traits are passed on and calculated. Parents sharing a majority of traits in one particular category increases the chance for all traits in that category to be passed on. Speed trait parents are more likely to have speed trait offspring, draft parents will more likely produce draft traited offspring, and so on. The categories are as follows: Speed - Giving ridden creatures a bonus to their riding speed. These no longer increase the speed of vehicles the animal may be hitched to. Draft - Allowing creatures to carry more, and providing speed bonuses to vehicles with hitched animals. Heavier loads will slow vehicles down, but draft animals will increase speed of the vehicle they are hitched to. Bison will have a large natural bonus on top of draft traits. Combat - These traits focus on combat bonuses, reduction in damage taken, and improving taming. Creatures with these traits can be easier to tame, and stay tame longer. Resource - Effect output for things like wool and milk, as well as the quality and quantity of butchered products. Miscellaneous - General traits with a range of effects like preventing creatures to roam even without a saddle, reducing food consumption, and reducing the chance to pack tiles. Negative traits - ones which have effects that may reduce usefulness. A few rare traits have been added which won’t be seen (or passed on) as easily/often as normal traits. These have wonderful effects like making aggressive creatures permanently passive (hello, house cats!), the ability to produce twins with identical traits when bred, and riding up slightly steeper slopes. Creatures may only have one rare trait. Traits will no longer directly be capped by your Animal Husbandry level. Each trait is now worth a certain amount of points, and you may have points up to your Animal Husbandry level. Rare traits will cost no points against your total. This point system will be explained further once the update is ready to be released. EDIT: There will no longer be negative point traits as mentioned previously due to the idea that priests and inbreeding would be mandatory for breeding the best stock. Shaping Up Beautifully These trait categories bring us to the addition of new shapes for our equine friends based on the traits they posses. This will bring more variety to the look of your herds and provide visual clues to the best use for each particular animal. Malena has made some wonderful images to show the changes, and provided a great explanation of the different shapes. Hot blooded horse: These will be your riding horses, with speed traits. Warm blooded horse: This is the default that we have in the game now (an "all round" horse with no qualities that make it especially stand out more in one category) Cold blooded horse: Stronger and able to work more efficiently. These will be your draft trait horses. Below is Malena's original suggestion post explaining the thoughts behind these new shapes and images of the above body styles in each color of horse: In Game Wurmpedia Polished Remember that peek at the in game Wurmpedia a few Valrei Internationals ago? Well, it's been polished and is looking quite pretty! Here's an image of how it fits in to the look of the new UI: It scales nicely as well! Community Event: Friendship Bay Summer Impalong And last, but not least, here's a shout out for the 4th Annual Friend-a-long! Hosted in Friendship Bay on Pristine in the Southern Freedom Isles. Only players on the Southern Cluster will be able to attend. Here's a link to the forum post for more details: I would love to feature some Northern Isles community events, so if you Northerners are working on one please let me know! I've been watching, hoping to see one to feature. That's it for this issue of the Valrei International! I'll leave you with a picture of the adorable donkeys and the first sneak peek at mules! We do expect to have the animal update released by the end of this month, so be ready to plan out your breeding programs and animal living areas! Happy Wurming everyone!

I may be a rare breed of a wurmian, who likes to play with sound on. Problem is, that compared to all other sounds, action samples like digging, or imping are really loud and there is no slider for it, just a toggle switch. Maybe I'm missing something, but it would be great to have a slider for that aswell, since we can ajust footsteps and background ambiance.

Big disagree on some aspects of that fragment idea, but there's some kernels of "ooh that could be good" in there. I strongly believe that no part of searching for uniques should be doable from the deed, its perimeter, or anywhere else really familiar. No farming, and sure as heck no praying. But it does present some very interesting thoughts. Namely, if a group (effectively) assembling and killing a unique is no impairment on your own quest to get one, surely that would lower toxicity. Those words alone got me thinking about Realistic Conflict Theory, which almost perfectly maps onto our own situation: A conflict for limited resources (unique spawns) causes ingroups and outgroups to get hostile (the current ugly situation, the constant hackusations). If some sort of fragment system were adopted, in such a way that one person getting fragments doesn't deprive another, and integrated into something that gets people out their deeds (say, the exploration update), that would solve the "limited resources" part of it. No doubt this would be met sceptically, since balancing self-driven unique spawns to not be too frequent would be difficult indeed. But Realistic Conflict Theory does present another way to lower hostility between groups: Superordinate Goals. This would mean somehow making dragons require whole scores of people to find, so that people would almost be required to interact between groups. How you'd accomplish this without making alts bypass it is completely beyond me, however. At this point every epic server has every possible unique alive on every island. It's less luck when there's that many

Current Problem Rift Participation Points should be awarded based on effort put in. Currently the system doesn't care about your skill or however much effort you put into fighting. The BEST way for someone to gain participation points is to go around spam targeting mobs in melee range in order to get a "tag". Then when the mob dies with your tag on it you get points. Imagine being an elite fighter around 90 fighting skill killing mob by mob and getting less points than someone who just started the game and isn't actually helping take on the rift. It's even worse for those that thought defensive fighting would be useful. Proposed Point System Points would instead be based upon the combination of Damage Dealt, Damage Healed, and Damage Mitigated. This benefits all forms of fighters and encourages more participation towards actually closing the rift and becoming a better fighter. All fighters who put work in will walk out with more reward and feel more achieved. Also, with damage mitigated providing points it would encourage tanks use their skills like taunting which would now have a major benefit. Additional thoughts These are some other things that might benefit from having points, but are not the main focus of this thread. Sacrificing hearts (I've heard it's currently 1), Butchering, and Burying. These would encourage ending waves quicker, and cleaning up the field. Potentially something good for those not too skilled in fighting. For those that wish to help this post grow and get more discussion PLEASE spread it to others. If you want change to happen in this game we need to band together and create a louder voice. Also, PLEASE provide reasoning as to why you support or oppose this idea.

It would be great to be able to plant small trees or bushes in pot or planters purely as decorations. They do not need, nor should they be functional. I think adding them would give more options for decorating one's deed. Some examples are as follows (purely as reference)...

Or you could always cooperate with other players, instead of trying to have the entire spectrum of horse-breeding on a minimum sized deed. That's probably a bigger challenge than getting your head around a huge new patch of updated content, and all the work of rebreeding every quality horse in Wurm.

I watched one of your videos about the new horse colors on youtube before i ever started playing wurm and that is one thing that really made me want to play. and with this newest update I love it, the hot, warm and cold blooded horses are a valuable addition to the game for me anyway and im sure many others. Thank you

    A) Can we get a list of traits from the devs ? B ) How badly will this screw pvp? C) If fo priests will now be mandatory for genesis / removing bad traits, can we at least lower the % change to get negative traits based on AH? It's too random in the old system. D) Can those "23 new traits list" be removed from pvp servers since clearly the sentiment is already against them ? E) Did any of the devs that worked on this have ever worked on pvp content for Wurm to see the negative ramifications of 23 new traits?

I'd really like it if the text for different traits is coloured so we can easily identify them. Green for speed, blue for draft and red for combat.

So you read that right, a FANTASTIC BONE! This little guy was dropped by a Forest Giant on the 15th of March, 2021. I expect this auction will either be very heated, or the opposite, due to the rarity of this item! These have gone for more coin than this in the past, and on the Southern Freedom Isles as well. We're going to start this out at Five Gold Coins, and see how much further it will go. Snipe Protection is exceptionally long so that everyone can get a chance to outbid the last guy! With Northern Freedom Isles being so new, this may be one of the very first of this item to exist here! Starting bid: 5g Increment (minimum): 10s Reserve: No Buyout: None Sniper Protection: 12 hours Private Bids: Not accepted Snipe Protection Activated!: I will notify the winner either here or in game to arrange delivery!

So I'm a liar now...nice way to just dismiss experiences that others have just because you have not had the same experience. I am NOT a priest, On Cadence and Harmony early on it was very easy for us to get 500+ points with the priests you talk about getting upwards of 700+. In many of your posts you continue to try and use your experiences on SFI and apply that to the entire population of the game of both SFI and NFI with out having any actual experience on NFI. I go to 1-2 rifts a week and have been doing so for months now on NFI. Anytime there is 50+ players it is easy for some of us to still get 400+ points. Yes it is tagging, and yes it is over rated and needs to be fixed and yes it is cheesing the system...but I am not lying and I would suggest you get some actual experience on the new servers before you throw around your experience and tossing out others. By the way, I'm not the only one who is getting these numbers, there have been many rifts where the top 15 were all 450+ points, both priests and non priests. After reading your post again, it appears even more clear to me that you don't know what your talking about when it comes to tagging. You saying that those that do so "will almost certainly be a dead player soon" is just...I don't even know how to address this statement. I have died one time at a rift, that was at the first Cadence rift and lag was over 40 seconds, and I got greedy trying to burn hearts to close the 4th wave. So it seems your experiences of 130 rifts vastly differs from experiences I have had doing 1-2 rifts a week since they started on NFI...and yet I'm not calling you a liar. Your statement of "boring and dangerous" is just your opinion and does not factor into anyone other experiences except your own. I find rifts to be very boring yes, but dangerous, not in the least bit.

The current tagging system is a broken system, and benefits those who know about it, while those who have no idea, mainly new players, are not able to take advantage of the tagging system and will never be able to keep up. Currently skill does not matter at all at a rift for the purpose of gaining points. Any player can go there with zero skill and be near the top of the point system and cheese the rewards. That is a drain on the others at the rift by those who do that. They are adding difficultly to the encounter while offering nothing to balance that out. This I don't feel applies to others who cheese the system by tagging, but then also help to kill the mobs. As it is very easy to tag everything around you then focus down a target. Any high skilled player can do this, and many do, to their advantage. I use the tagging system, but I also have high end gear and 86 fighting skill and I help clear the mobs after tagging. It is not a hard thing to do at all and the game is set up for this method and the rewards from getting 150 points vs 500 points can be fairly noticeable. We are talking about the difference of 40-50ql rift mats vs 90-100ql rift mats. With the difficulty of crafting the runes, that ql difference does matter. I do agree that part of the experience of the rift is by those who do the prep work, many times its the locals who do it. Its also those who do help by bringing friends and those summoning others. But I don't understand why that is even brought up as an issue in the discussion of rebalancing rifts. All those things are called being a good neighbor, or being friendly. I summon to unique events all the time (when we have public ones) I almost always bring other people with me via cart to rifts. I also almost always bring a crate of cotton for those that forgot theirs or run out. Do I expect to be rewarded, or even desire that, no, I do not. I do so because it is part of the experience and I want to add to that experience. I would suggest that most others that do the same thing also do so for similar reasons and don't desire any kind of reward. Nor do I even think that kind system, of rewarding those that do the "grunt" work is even possible. There is no way to put a value on that kind of work. So that leaves us with what things a value can be put on. Value here I am meaning a numerical value of creating a system that would give out rewards. There is no way to put into the system that each person summoned, or brought, or each cotton shared, or each gem given has a point value. The value of said actions is in the action it self and the motivation behind those that do said things for the good of others. The idea of a point system, be it tiered or some kind of scale should take into account as many factors as possible. Damage done, damage taken, damage healed, damage mitigated, bodies butchered, bodies buried, hearts sacrificed and anything else that can be thought of. Every action that can be measured within the rift could have a value given. This would give anyone and everyone there options to earn points. Using cotton to heal yourself or another player...you get points, you want to butcher the bodies to get the meat and bury them...you get points. You use a shield and block some damage, you get points. Every action possible that is a benefit to the closing of the rift should have a value. Now how those numbers scale or if there is some tier system, or how that looks, I have no idea, that is beyond my design ability and would require massive balance so that another tagging issue does not happen. Some meta that everyone uses to the expense of no one doing any of the other actions that reward points. I think that there should be more rewards that can be purchased that are a benefit to all levels of players and all play styles. It is clear to me that many of the players at rifts on NFI are new players. I ask at most rifts who is new there, and I always get more then a handful, and every rift there are different new players. While rifts may have been designed for end game, new players are showing up and want to have a go at them, and they should. Giving rewards that are geared towards them as well as those that are geared towards more veteran players could go a long way to making rifts desirable to many more players. Create some kind of cosmetic items that can be purchased. Cosmetic items are something that Wurm should be taking advantage of so much more. So many missed chances to make the player base happy by simply adding in cosmetics. 5,000 rift points, purchase a taxidermy kit to make a stuffed version of your favorite mob. 3,000 rift points, get a new cool hat, or cosmetic staff, or wagon covering...so many things to make going to rifts more desirable, things that everyone can use and attain. Just some thoughts, sorry for the wall of text, in short...more balance, more points, more stuff = more fun for everyone!

Judging from what *you* (and it is *you*, not you) deem a pro, you are focused entirely on economic gain from the rifts, bringing it further in line with other skills to make them a commodity. This honestly just reads as "I should get more points at rifts because I trained my fighting skill"; which is utter garbage because it ignores the people doing the real work at rifts. What about the folks who build the safe areas, the priests who teleport folks in, and the folks who prep and make saccing materials and bring gems for the healers? Are you going to reward them? What about the folks who trail-blaze, putting up signs and maps? These are people who turn up the day before (some the moment the rift appears), and are continually working before the rift even starts, mostly it is people like that who make the rift an experience, not the people doing the killing. Are you going to reward the people who gather up mounts for teleportees too, or the ones who cart/sail their neighbours to the rift? You're arguing that the people who contribute should be rewarded, but you've failed to see who really contributes and assigned that role to the most visible participant. Ask around and you'll find that it isn't the guy in glimmer up front, hacking into the ranks of jackal critters, that people think deserves the reward, or even the priest spamming LoF to keep folks alive (and it really is hard work keeping some of you folks alive, trying to tank a rift ogre in studded leather is just not a good idea!), it's the people who do everything to make all of that possible. You want to make rifts like other systems in wurm, but your suggestion fails to do that. Wurm's existing systems reward all forms of participation, not just the ones most visible at the end, and this would really turn rifts into events the majority of the population would avoid.

That's just plain wrong!! Other players do try to find them and spend countless hours doing so. Saying we all hide on our deeds is an insult!!!! In fact I spend a majority of my time hunting off deed, you don't get to over 90 fs as I have sitting around the deed as you suggest!!! And in my travels I have yet to find any uniques! All the slayings I've been too have been hosted public slayings! With the exception of one that was lured to a rift. And if I was not on the forums as many players are not I would have never known of those public slayers either! That is not a system that works for the majority of players!

I personally feel like a reworking of rifts shouldn't be dependent on the 100 rift journal entry. Although if this were to decrease your chances to get to 100 a future post asking for it to be tweaked I think would be reasonable. I do think this discourages lower skilled players, however the point of this change is to benefit those who put in the work to level their skill. You wouldn't expect a level 1 Blacksmith to get the same benefits as a level 90 Blacksmith. Fighting to me is a lackluster skillset that only truly benefits you at Private Slayings, and I believe this change would create a lot more meaning to it.
