Being a community manager/relations person has got to be one of the toughest and most thankless jobs in game development. You're basically the buffer between players and the dev team. You often end up being the punching bag for angry, entitled mobs whilst having to keep a calm, friendly and professional demeanor. You get bombarded with questions you're not yet allowed to answer (even though you'd love to), and being demanded of things you have no control over (although you'd love to fix them). Sometimes there may be game design changes from the dev team that you personally don't even agree with, yet it's -you- who must present these changes to the community as if you stood behind them 100%, only to get flooded with complaints and abuse from players who hate the changes. You do it because it's your JOB. Retro thank you for all that you've done. Not only for enduring everything I listed above for so many years, but the numerous other things you've given to Wurm, like coordinating the Valrei Entertainment Network to give Wurm content creators a spotlight and to give Wurm a presence in Twitch/YouTube as well as many other contributions, most of which I'm sure the community isn't even aware of. A big thank you also for the enormous amount of support and love you've given to players who do cool things in Wurm by writing about them and encouraging them here in the forums. The best of luck with your new endeavors and I hope we'll be seeing you around as a player still. Demona: A huge congratulations on your new exciting role! I wish you smooth sailing and many opportunities to shine. In tough times ahead, remember that there are a lot of us out here who have enough compassion and understanding to recognize the challenges of this job and respect the work that your role entails. Although we may not always be as vocal as *cough* "some", we're here in the background and support you. The best of luck. You got this! ❤️

I looked it up the other day, seven years since I took on the name of Retro, helping out as a PR assistant under RedBaron, I didn't realise it had been so long. And it has been long; it's been a significant journey with all of you, team and players alike. We've seen bridges come (!) as well as underground houses, rifts, and the launch on Steam, seriously too many events to cover all of them (Have you ever tried to make a big deal about being able to place things on tables in a press release?) It's not just about what we've done too; it's about what YOU, the players have done as well. Countless impalongs, events, more than one piece of fanart of me (seriously), and years of good times and some bad puns have passed. With that said, it also feels too short, like it passed in the blink of an eye, and realising that it wasn't last month that Tich told me to "F$%k off" when I casually suggested more stair types, or that Grifo has been calling me Bluto for near two years now, it has been fun. I'm sure by now you're all aware of where this is leading, but I've decided to move on from Wurm and find greener pastures to cause havoc on. My replacement will be the lovely @DemonaNightshadea well known and bright member of the community. She is excited at the opportunity to work with you all to build a cheerful and optimistic community together. I'll be around until the end of March as we work on handover and getting Demona up to speed, and I'll still be playing, roaming Release and other servers while I hunt for bug guts and various bits, so if you do see me around, make sure to say hi. As always, keep on Wurming Retrograde.

I saw a comparable change of dealing with free players in Ryzom. Before the game went to Steam, there has only been a 14 days long free trial. That was changed to unlimited free play, capped at half of the skill obtainable (which was 250 in 63 skills so that a free player could reach 125, same for an unsubbed player). This has been introduced 9 or ten years ago, due to a dwindling population, and though that game (from 2004) is nothing less than overpopulated, it still exists today. And rpughly half of the modest population are free players which are integrated into roleplay and events, not few of them subbing here and then. The "f2p" system in Wurm does not allow a player much independent gameplay, it even hardly pretends to do so. I recall very well how messages are popping up asking you to sub as f2p once any of your skills and characteristics hits 20. which is obtrusive and ballyhooing more likely to drive away players rather than convincing them (at least there should be a profile option to deselect these molesting messages). It would be reasonable to raise the limit to 30 at least, or better 50, maybe leaving some limitations like having villagers in place (or better not, dunno). It would allow for additional players and make look the game less empty for those who dislike it. It would also address negative feedback from the steam community and maybe help to get new players with some if not many subbing at least for some time.

Retro, thank you for the bad puns and keeping us updated on this rollercoaster of the past few years. Thank you for everything you've done, the stuff we've seen and not seen and even the things some may have disagreed with. Thanks for being that link between players and Devs, but most of all thank you for being you and best of luck with the future. DemonaNightshade, congratulations on your new role. You have big shoes to fill but I'm sure you'll do great. Much love and respect to all, Gumbert

the increased critical chance is basically nothing, the highest crit chance non-arti weapon is scythe at 1.6% chance, rarity takes it to 1.76%, rare weapons still use all the generic rare bonuses like increased imp speed, less damage taken, less ql lost repairing, all that stuff. all the bonuses make it need to be reimped about 1/3 as often as a normal weapon of the same type which i'd say is much more useful than a 0 - 0.16% crit chance based on weapon lol

Thanks for the congratulations everyone ❤️ I hope to do some great things and look forward to working with our awesome community here in Wurm! Retro, I've said it already but it's been great and I know you'll do amazing things in your greener pastures! Thanks in advance for the time you'll be spending these next few weeks showing me some of the ropes.

doubt that clearly NOT A PRIORITY we'd otherwise get fix years ago @Ekcinwe're talking about mechanics.. you're just bashing names and giving your opinions and views about other people.. can you align on the subject and see if you can be objective with the topic or should a mod check and clear some of that offtopic stuff you keep posting

It seems to me you have a really hard time making your point without shaming the people you disagree with as being greedy, having ugly envy and being rumourmongers. Your point seems to be "everything is fine as it is". I dare say about 15 people out of the whole NFI population share your point of view on this. To me it's clear that everything is very much not fine. A sizeable amount of the population seems to think there is foul play involved, which wether true or not, is a problem in itself as it breeds apathy. The devs apparently closely watch all the unique kills, which only makes sense to me if there was foul play involved at some stage. I have no reason to doubt the dev's earnestness in the effort to keep a level playing field for all. Yet, this doesn't seem to reach players' ears enough. As mentioned by someone else on this thread, maybe a public statement would help change perceptions.

Just two things: 1) It's OAKSHIELD, not OakENshield. While the origin of the name is obvious, I made a typo at the time, just to realise I was one of the few with that name, instead of the billions of Oakenshields. 2) While the Lunar Order is part of the Loch Ness Alliance, as far as I'm concerned nothing changes about the housing and guiding of new or returning players as it was done in the past. Having a somewhat bigger alliance and a more active alliance chat may actually be more helpful, but as long as there's a Lunar Order, there's a place to help the new or returning players. So keep on recuiting! Thorin

You'll be missed Retro. We've sometimes not seen eye to eye, but regardless I'm happy to call you a friend and I'm glad you'll still be ingame. You've been the bearer of bad news all too often, and the forum/game punching bag for the more turbulent times. As someone who was so often the only point of contact between players and devs, the gap you'll leave is immense and I hope Demona is ready to step up to the plate for that.

There's not enough in the way of new tactical decisions and no sense of "style" to be gained from the new special moves. The split of offensive/defensive stances was a step in the right direction. However, the special moves are sorely lacking. Combat is already split into 10 second intervals. Every special move should have a maximum cooldown of 10 seconds to allow one use per combat round. Some might even deserve cooldowns that are even lower. Additionally, the effects of the moves (outside of potent ones like stun) should last ~30 seconds to allow for combinations between special moves to optimize your fighting style. Think to turn-based tactic games like Disgaea or Final Fantasy genre, where you would do a form of armor break then attack the opponent. For example: Start with a special move that reduces the target's defense. Then use a special move 10 seconds later that deals increased damage to swiftly slay them. Useful against weaker targets. Start with a special move that reduces the target's CR. Then use a special move that drains their stamina. The stamina drain would hit more reliably against the reduced CR. Useful against tough opponents where you might not win by raw health, but removing their stamina might change the outcome. Upon getting into a dangerous situation, use a special move to reduce the opponent movement speed and break combat. Having 20-50 second cooldowns shared between all special moves means you'll very rarely get the chance to use them tactically. Their effect not lasting long enough also means that you cannot apply a combination of potent effects. Additionally, this was the perfect opportunity to implement tools to mitigate the difference between priest and non-priests in combat. Instead, there is no sign of any moves which interrupt casting, hinder casting, or are limited to non-priests. As of right now only the stunning moves are potent to stop casting, but they are available to priests anyway and are useful beyond simple interrupts. I'd like to see the special moves have shorter cooldowns, longer effects, and thought put into the way that they might combine to create interesting combat situations.

Well, we had big ideas on server start, but it's time we face reality and realize we still haven't even halfway through our Harmony Bay Market deed, and there's little hope we will ever begin on working on the other one anytime soon. Enough of keeping an undeveloped deed in a position with good potential, we will just auction it with the coffer's content as a base. Its perimeter starts the tile next to where Heartland perimeter ends. (fun fact) It was the First deed to be founded on the NFI cluster The land is wild and mostly untouched, and i have an hard time making meaningful screenshots, but if you want to check it out, it's just next to Heartland Starting bid : 6s 15c min increase : 1s no buyout - no reserve - no private offers

I agree on that one. Free accounts should be modified a bit to make the game more enticing. maybe a re-modelling of the subscription concept would be best.

I can say only one thing: It is good style to reach a consensus among the participants rather than forcing the own behaviour onto others. Closing the rift when others are fighting the warmaster is certainly bad conduct. Whether the recent mechanics are good or should be changed is another question. There is a thread for in feature feedback:

I know that you probably won't comment on that, but I still think it's worth asking. Rumors are that the PR position was far now a paid position and from now on it will be a voluntary one and that's why you're actually leaving. So any chance you can confirm or deny that? Just so we know if to expect someone doing this as a full time job or someone who volunteers her time and cut her some slack.

Hello! Would you ever consider breeding and selling other mounts? Such as 5-speed Unicorn, Bison, Brown Bears, Crocs, or Hell-Horses? If so, I have a female 5-speed Champion Unicorn, a female 5-speed Champion Croc, and a female 5-speed Champion Brown Bear, that you could use to start from. I also have champion scorpion and troll (no traits) and wild caught hell-horses. I am right next to you in Eden Village on Newspring Island. Thanks and I hope you consider it! I'd be willing to help for sure, I can Dominate Monster, Charm Animal, and tame most tamable things. - Koreal (in-game main is Midgaar)

To be fair by now there are a ton of indicators (not just in Wurm) to measure "how dead" a server is regardless of apparent population size. 1. Trade chat = pretty dead, used to be spammed every 30 seconds with new offers, now you see about 10 offers a day 2. Forum chat = Used to be livelier here 3. Global / server chat = again , silent 4. Just wandering about to see if you have any neighbours at all 5. Lack of pvp death tabs or general combat We can measure 1 variable, in this case population size, but it's difficult to account for the number of alts that pump the game's pop stats. The variables I mentioned are an indicator on how a new player might perceive the game. Think about previous MMO gaming experiences and how "alive" games felt when you just ran around and didn't know where to look first, you were bombarded by info and players talking, trade chats scrolling by like a stock exchange ticker. I am really concerned that the move to open extra servers will speed up the game's demise since we went from having 4 dead servers (epic) to having 11 dead servers with the old freedom ones slowly joining the fray. I don't doubt wurm can survive with a minimal population of die hard fans pumping $ into alts and deeds but 300ish players keeping Wurm alive won't be much of an mmo but rather more of a small gaming club at best. Something needs to be done fast. A vision to really expand Wurm population while fixing its retention and initial player experience.
