Picture the scene.... You've come back to wurm after a long break. Your deed is gone, everything in it is gone; you friends list is empty, or almost empty; your horses are dead or stolen; your cart is either heavily decayed or gone. You might have a boat lying around, but everything in it rotted away. You've got 20 skill in everything, except stats, and those are capped at 30. You're probably going to die very shortly if you lived somewhere remote, within the first 20 mins of returning usually. Do you stick around? I'm going to guess most people wouldn't; and here I think is a big issue in wurm's design. The re-entry barrier. So, here are a couple of ideas on how to get over this: 1. Give every player a PvE server a free summon corpse good for 1 month after rejoining (granted if a deed you own has dropped after existing for more than 2 months, and if you have been inactive for over a month) and no death penalty during the first 24 hours of logging in after a period of inactivity. 2. 24 hours of free premium time if the account has been inactive for over 2 months 3. Link skillcap to amount of premium paid in the past. +1 to the cap for every 1 month of premium a player has paid. These three ideas are quick and easy fixes for long-term absence. (3) also rewards long term subscribers.

What could also be cool is some sort of welcome back journal if you've been inactive a while and were one prem, bunch of tasks to do when you get back to the game with a premium time reward. It'd give people a sense of purpose straight away and hopefully give them the itch to continue playing.

I really like that you're thinking about this. As it is, Wurm is definitely not a game that a player could set down for an extended break (for whatever reason) and feel like they'd be able to jump right back in later on. Very smart to take a break from all the speculation and brainstorming about player retention, and bring this up. I like addressing the "you're probably about to die" issue. A free summon corpse is good - but what about not ending up as a corpse to begin with? What about giving returning players a free teleport to a spawn point & 24 hours of the newbie buff(s)? Someone coming back into Wurm might have knowledge and some skills, but without assets and resources, that's not going to do much initially. Get 'em to a spawn point or newbie town, give them 24 hours of glowing (they won't have a lantern or candles anymore), let them access the bartender for food/drink for 24 hours. I'd rather be too generous for returning Wurmians than making it rough and have them all feel cut off and hopelessly left behind.

If monty python could save us, would be nice. I do hope something is done about player retention and events added to make the grind bearable. I think one of the main issues is the cyclical nature of skills. Aka = you get some basic skills up but the reward doesn't seem that impactful when there are many players way above you that can make you better stuff quickly. Would be nice if we had events : puzzles, dungeon crawlies (maybe a server with quests? something like legend of grimrock 2?) where all skills are tested. Give players few resources, and they have to make due on a deserted island. Give people a few sticks some rocks and let them survive on a dangerous island filled with dragons, ogres and zombies. Step by step take them deeper to the heart of the island where everything is tested. Hidden traps, lava pits, there are limited iron veins to make stuff, things like that. I dunno, maybe just ranting but I miss surprising events. Most of the game's pleasant surprises for me came from player content. Such as a guy randomly putting 700 gravestones and goblin skulls around his pallisade walls on the perimeter of his deed. He had a nice creepy theme with that deed.

Instead of summon corpse, maybe give returners who have been away for some minimal time a version of the starter tent (that could also function as a portal to a starter town), already pitched at their return login location, and a welcome back message that recommends they build some shelter (or even just a fence).

Of all the things that have taken my breath away, seeing my first Wurmrise from the starting area on Jackal was certainly one of them.

These threads are cute. I've been playing for over 13 years now, and they pop up all the time. "The game is dying!" "How will it possibly survive!" - and yet, it does, and will continue to do so. There were years when 200 players total (including alts, NOT unique) for SFI would have been a 'good' day in wurm. "The Great gamble" - you make it sound like more than it is. Nothing has failed and to deem it as such after a TINY example of the life of Wurm, is doing the game, its loyal developers, and players, a disservice.

Just to throw my 2 irons in there - It would be very nice if "themed" containers provided some (small?) reduction in decay of items that match the theme. Call it a theming bonus or whatever. Call it nothing at all, I don't care... but If I put my tools in a tool rack, or tool box - one of the reasons I've store them there is to give an extra little bit of protection from wear & tear, cobwebs, and rust. I don't leave my armor (leather, maille, plate, etc) just laying about - I keep it clean, well oiled, and polished on my armor stand. I put my cloth clothing, hats, and cloaks in my wardrobe. That keeps them neat and tidy, and protects them a little bit from moths and mice. Basically... if a player has gone to the trouble of crafting a specific themed container for each of their various sets of items, tools, and equipment... it's because that player actually gives a fig, and actively wants to keep their stuff well-maintained. Without the incentive of some sort of decay reduction or whatever - you end up with the current status quo: everyone just keeps a coffin by the door.

I would like to clarify some reference points for the terms "Everything is fine" and "The dying cluster". I see someone has been trained in statistics and studies here. It would be nice to have operational terms. For ex. @Ekcin would have a different definition of a healthy cluster than me. My definition of a healthy server would mean at least " 100 unique players logging in monthly". I recall Epic back in 2013 had those numbers, for each Epic server. My definition of "The dying cluster" would be less than 25 unique players per month on any server. Can Wurm survive on such numbers? I doubt it. Seasonal events such as xmas gifts, always see an influx of premmed alts for 1 month so they can get xmas gifts but that number drops severely in Spring. Can we please clarify our terms @Etherdrifter? Since we're working with numbers, some thresholds would be ideal.

Incident time December 19th, 2020 at 20:00 GMT I was driving my large cart with one (1) passenger in a mine tunnel highway and suddenly i got the Scratch, you caught something. We were Not over crowded, i had stopped so we could both drink from the cave canal we were driving along side. This also happened to two days ago, driving my wagon on a Switch back ramp road, 1 pax on the rear in the Tail Gunner's seat, suddenly I get "Scratch, you caught a disease". My wife Skyefox had it happen to her today Commanding her large cart solo, on a public CE Hwy. ... several others have told me the same thing. One person mentioned getting Diseased like x6 events in past few months. Could this be looked into please? You should not get sick Commanding any vehicle with or without passengers. Thank you for your time and trouble, Best wishes for a Merry Christmas. Kindest regards, Hughmongus Co-Administrator - The Albia Roads Map of Indy

I know "desperately" sounds a tad over dramatic, but we have a very serious situation here. Guys have cool facial hairstyles. If a group of 10 guys are meeting up to slay a dragon or something, they all look different. If 10 female fighters join them, they all look like clones of each other. Women currently have a few look-alike unimaginative cuts that are frankly (sorry about this) -- bor-ing. The dev team appears to be all guys. Ergo they are probably clueless as to what women want. You are in luck. I will help you with this. We want these three cuts added: 1, Short perky ponytail 2. Punky troublemaking rebel 3. demure maiden side braid Thank you on behalf of female wurm players.

There are a whole bunch of threads asking for various new decor items and me, personally, I'd love to see them all in game. But, I know there are other priorities right now and making entirely new things takes time and work when there's other work that more urgently needs doing. Middle ground solution: pretty pretty please let us use beeswax to render an item functionally useless but without/with drastically reduced decay when on deed. Converting the item in this way prevents the mechanic being used as an exploit to get around decay on items, but means that we can make better/any use of some of the beautiful models the art team have created for us that never get seen. For example: A couple of bales of waxed wheat can sit in an animal enclosure to make it look more farm-like A waxed fruit pie can adorn a dining table as a centrepiece without vanishing in a couple of days Archaeology finds in nice metals that will never be used can be waxed and put on display in a museum Your very first weapon that you have a sentimental attachment to but will never use again can sit pride of place in your house A fisherman's prized catch can be displayed on a shelf A couple of books can be left by an armchair or on a side table in someone's cosy library A basket (pile) of waxed fruit or vegetables can sit by a farmyard door A marketplace deed can put different items of clothing or jewellery on display on counters and shelves (without needing to go and repair them every month or so) Starter towns and newbie recruiting villages can be decorated in such a way that makes them look vibrant and alive and full of the possibilities of Wurm with examples of some of the systems and items that so rarely get 'seen' - like cooking, fishing, archaeology, even basic tools that you don't know exist til you make them or discover them, and so on and so on. The effort and resources required to wax items should mean that it isn't so overused it creates a clutter problem for the server, it would give additional uses to beehives which are woefully underused, it would present a lot of legitimate new decor options for people who like to decorate without requiring a heavy load (or any load) of work for the art team to create new models and it would finally allow us to make good use of all the hard work already gone into making models of items than never get placed anywhere, in practice, because of decay.

I haven't been using the community Xanadu map while exploring and ending up in an area I haven't been to before. I found something I want to get back to with a wagon, but I am not positive where exactly I am. Do any of you employ ways of retracing your steps? Medieval "flares", as they were? Something you already have on hand or could forage for?

Maybe, when your premium runs out you shouldn't be dropped to 20/30 for skills/characteristics, but to the average of your prem levels and the non-prem caps. That way going non-prem is still a hit and therefore there is incentive to stay premium, but there is still incentive to stick around for a bit post-premium so it is still good to play, but better to premium. This way, post-premium free is good but with premium subscription is better.

okay. but, just because it's done "pretty good" doesn't mean it couldn't be better. This might not be the biggest issue when it comes to player retention - but the dynamic interplay between the new player experience, the balance between free content and paid content, and the publisher's efforts in marketing / PR to guide player expectations is definitely a part of it. Sometimes I give attention to the little stuff because it is little - I don'[t know what the devs are juggling right now, but I know they're busy. Maybe a small thing can be done quickly, by one person over one week... maybe getting that small thing out of the way will clear a path down the road for something bigger. We're always coming up with really great, really big ideas in the Suggestion forum... maybe something small, with barely any impact, is the only kind of project they can take on right now? I just figure... someone could take some extra time over a weekend & tweak a couple phrases on a website, and huzzah, we've expanded the player recruitment window just a little bit. That's a plus. Even if it's a small one.... I'll take it.

Yeah, New Eden Harbour, like Ayuna says, is really lovely. In that area is also Seriphina's Lorewood Gardens, a really nice deed. And I'd say that seeing The Fortress at G17/18 is worth the trip. Also the White Castle/Black Castle complex at I26 has some really interesting features and buildings. If it's still standing, Aske's bridge in the lower left corner of F21 is unbelievable, just beware of traveling on it, as I've had a horse fall through the cracks and died trying to retrieve it.

Apples and Oranges when Blizzard stop showing subs was when the take over happened not just because of sub loss IIRC, wasn't just about hiding numbers as they could have included the new china market ( was was complex mess due to local laws ) to boost how good the numbers were. I mean they still had at lowest point Millions of subs. A better example was a game called Asherons Call, skill based like wurm poorer crafting, no terraforming but better pvp and combat. dropped to sub 1k accounts between 7 servers iirc across mainly 2 time zones UK / USA It struggled on for years with a handful of players nearly 20 years IIRC, before losing the battle, the GHOST TOWN effect is very real and even going free to play didn't save it as new players left as fast as they came, it also have another problem same as wurm, the older players didn't want change, no change to adapt to a changing market mean a long slow death. The game was good, but a good game doesn't mean it will last or thrive. Wurm is a great game, but steam was rushed I know it seemed to take an age, but important things should have been done before steam, combat being the main one. But it is what it is, wurm dies I still Have WU to get my fix and I bet a mod would be released pretty fast adding everything from Online to Unlimited if the servers shut, so I am not worried.

That was magnificent! I love how nervous the brothers got when it was 5 minutes before start. The whole thing was intense! Also I must confess, I never knew there was a tunnel through that last mountain, I assumed everyone would take the way West around it. Which still seems the fastest... The worst mistake I made was clearly to wait with forming the team chat. It should of course have been up while people were scouting. I will take the brothers' advise and publish any further race I make in Town Square, and maybe in Global Chat, if the mods will allow that.

I went out shark fishing and accidentally caught this instead. She's at least 11 or 12 tiles long and six or seven tiles from flipper-tip to flipper-tip. I had to build a three-storey tower to mount her on for display purposes. She's an aged champion blue whale, and surely one of the biggest mobs in the game. I've named her Moby Penis, to evade profanity filters. She's at Pumpkin Fields, K17 on Xanadu, if anyone wishes to visit and heap praise upon me.

Since "rewarding people for grinding super high" and preventing grinding past 75 being wasted effort is the hot topic of the month with the imbue discussion, can we remove this archaic system and instead have <-100 and >100 rolls instead just cap to -100 and 100 instead of rerolling, as these features make grinding any skill that doesn't cap max ql to skill level and deals in <20 difficulty actions, mainly creation skills, past 75 and especially past 90 almost worthless. Skills like metallurgy coalmaking locksmithing etc are hit especially hard by this weird mechanic, grinding from 70 to 99 coalmaking for example only increases your average coal pile ql from 70 to 76 when using 90ql mats, talk about a waste of time lmao

I like the idea a lot but I have a feeling it is not going to be easy to implement due to the way Wurm store the tile types.

The thoughest time in Wurm is no doubt the first days, so we decided to build a open free motel and a puplic crafting area, Living near Esert we have met some new players that seems kinda lost and confused, so we have decided to build a place for new players to stay the first couple of days to get started. As guest at our motel new players will be offered: - Help get started. - free place to sleep(crucial to build up sleep bonus that gives double skill gain) - Puplic crafting area. - Safe place to gather some ressources and craft/build stuff that is handy to have at the start. Time to move on? We will offer all new player to help find their home and transportation of their stuff, no matter if they decide to stay on Exo or move to another server. Motel is open for everyone to stay the night if they are out traveling. Location: J12 on the ingame map, less then 2min walk West from Esert. Follow the highway and you will walk through the deed.

  44. 1 point
Ah, I see! Well, the notion of "healthy" (as in, "everything is fine") for me would be an average monthly population of 500 players upon the cluster. I'd constitute anything below 300 as "sickly" and anything below 200 as "dire" Anything between 300 and 500 would be "uncertain". My reasonining behind this is mostly based upon avoiding the "ghost town" mmorpg scenario; a population of around 500 players on the cluster would create enough "social neighbourhoods" to avoid this. Your opinion has been noted.

One way is, sell the bone and all the other stuff that is good to sell travel over to cade and resize that deed to smallest one able, then disband it and get the money back that is in the coffer sit down the time it take to disband, dont leave server untill you got the money from it (or you wont get them) Then travel back to mel and do same thing , resize to smallest size ( after you sold your animals and stuff) Let the money you manage to get from material, animal, boats and other stuff stay in your bank. And one day when you feel rdy to log in again and stay the time ingame you prefer and manage then you got some money to start with and the character you like to play with
