Moonpoppy and I set out to cover big events and meet interesting people on the Defiance server. We're mostly just messing around but feel free to give feedback or let us know who you'd want us to talk to. Or maybe you want to be on yourself? For now it's only audio but we hope to eventually add cool and interesting video to it as well. In the first video we talk to the infamous warrior Chevtuk! (9th september, so rather old news already) Upcoming interviews with Grug and Cigay

One day, when you meet someone taking advantage of you having a high level in a skill, you will understand. Trying to be nice, and having someone say "Can you imp this for me? Can you make that for me? Can you imp this whole armor set for me? Can you make me smelters? Can you make me extra sets of armor and imp them all?" It is amazingly obnoxious and costs what could have been a nice friendship by literally making you want to avoid that person asking at all costs. I don't want to spend my time making stuff for other people unless I WANT to. I don't want to be asked to do things constantly for others, though if I see someone struggling I am MORE than willing and generous to OFFER if I have the time and the motivation. And believe me, I have helped many many people, so please don't act like I am being greedy. My skills are none of your business unless I choose to share them. Just like nobody else wants to see YOUR skills in return. You don't have that right just because you pay premium. Guess what? We all do to.

I mean with that mind set why not show how much money each player has?? or how many marks, jackal points, etc. Some people like privacy. It has nothing to do with deception.

Wurm's game design has been solidified as being able to do ALL skills if you want, except those related to being a priest , unless you choose to convert. You can't limit professions, since once you hit 90 in something most players choose another skill to grind. If that were to happen people would spam alt accounts with 10 different professions on each. That would be real fun right? Kinda like how ultima online did it or how people in wow had alts with different professions. Old players on the NFI do have the advantages of knowing many in game mechanics that helps them to grind easier. That is true. But as Nekojin said, it would be impossible to enforce since old players can create as many accounts as they want. Sorry but your suggestion wouldn't bring any benefit to wurm.

Just in case nobody has mentioned this yet, there is another reason to not have your skill levels immediately visible to everyone. It's called human decency, respectfulness, and courtesy. Behind those "just pixels" is an actual person. By including in Wurm a menu option to "view skills" on other characters, you are removing a level of human interaction. If I can go around MMOs using menu options to view a character's build, a character's equipment, a character's skill levels - then I would be the one reducing other players down to "just pixels" - I would be treating other players like mobs or NPCs, as AI driven non-entities existing only as props for my game in my own world. It is simply common courtesy to extent a modicum of respect to other player characters & their right to personal space, privacy, and agency. If you are curious about a character's skill set - be a human being and ask the person. Maybe the person will lie to you in response. But it is entirely possible that when you treat a character (and thereby a person) with a little respect and humanity, that person is going to respond to you in kind.

Negative. Wurm is A sandbox, not YOUR sandbox. Arguments like "If you don't want me to see then stay away" are kind of like "If you don't like the way I drive stay off the footpath." It is not up to others else to police themselves in relation to something you shouldn't be doing anyway. If you want to compete against other players, which from several of your posts and topics seems to be what you want, then Wurm has several servers specifically for that. They are called "Player versus Player" whereas there are "Player versus Environment" servers for those of us who do NOT want to compete with other players.

I think a part of why threads like this don't get an answer from staff is that they feel the current policies are enough and that the game mechanics speak for themselves. Over the years policies like the FCC and enclosure rules and even highways were taken from being policies defined by a rule, but where ingame actions could still happen, to current day where the policies line up more with what is possible in game. The general idea of deed it or lose it has always been a hot button issue and there are a lot of threads just like this dating all the way back to the dawn of time. There are also a lot of threads like this over the years that try to classify what is stealing and what isn't (and the difference between what is and is not stealing in the world of wurm versus how we try to define it from the real world) There is the play nice rule, which has a few examples listed in it. One thing I noticed was that in those examples, and even in the rest of the rules and PSAs etc there is no actual mention of stealing (other then the specific mention of stealing a deed from the owner) This came to my attention recently after my return from a long break where I had a conversation with a player who wanted to borrow something high value from me to complete a journal task. I had said I was not comfortable with it as I am just returning and do not know them or the reputation they have at the moment etc (To be clear, they have a good reputation I later found out and have traded with them nicely since) but I mention that because upon explaining I was not comfortable with it I was told that stealing it/not giving it back is a bannable offence and that GMs would just get my stuff and give it back if something happened and ban them. Which I though to myself okay sure that might be the way the GMs handle it, but after digging around on the rules pages I saw nothing about stealing items, scamming, etc in the sense of giving somebody items for the purpose and they turn around keeping them. Which is why I was uncomfortable with it because what is done in practice amoung GMs could change GM to GM or day to day, and there was no in writing protection there. That brings me to the community stream with Retro where I mentioned and asked about how there is no official rules about stealing/scamming items in those ways and whether with the steam launch and influx of new players maybe it would be a good time to put those into writing - as wurm grew out of the small community game it has been. The answer was basically that there was no need for official rules about them, and that GMs handle things case by case but that at the end of the day that is what makes player reputation important in the world. The above story, plus some recent finds on the forums searching the topics which I will add some pics of a few relevant comments at the end have lead me to believe that the lack of policy on these things is intentionally the policy but that that the game mechanics define what the rules are (Minus the obvious things like exploiting a bug, or times where a patch might cause unintended mechanics) When you make a character and first drop something it warns you in a pop up that you must agree to (and select if you want to see the warning again or hide it forever) but it basically states that items in the world are not safe from people taking them unless its on your deed, in your house secure etc. Whether the below images were made when the person was staff or not (not sure if at the time of the post they were staff I mean) but it's what leads me to feel like the game itself defines what is stealing or not. Stealing being disabled on freedom - would cover something where its an unintended use of mechanics to take something. But that items in the world not protected by the provided game mechanics are "take" instead of steal means that it's not classified in the game world as stealing. That you can bash a fence and go in, and that the horses or animals etc are able to be lead or taken or killed. So I think the real thing to think about with all of this is that the game makes it pretty clear what is and isn't stealing or taking or property or not. After all stealing is defined as taking somebody elses property - which wurm as a game/world has classified property as being things on your person, or protected properly using the game mechanics etc. So the question really comes down to not is it stealing or not, is it allowed (since it was allowed by the mechanics in a way without abusing bugs/exploits) but instead is a question as players about whether it is morally right or wrong. But that is a question that everyone will answer differently and has no set answer as each person has their own sense of what is moral. I think these below responses in the past to similar topics though are what has made me a believer that the mechanics (not exploits/bugs etc) are set a certain way and that those define what is stealing or not to the game, and the question really becomes as a community game where reputation matters its more of that if enough people think it morally wrong then the punishments from the community (in terms of trade, help, etc) would be the punishment. sorry for the quality of the pictures, was a rush snap. Edit also found this clipped from an old Enki post when enclosures and fcc were removed: In approximately two weeks time in conjunction with the removal of the Enclosure Rules we will be shutting down the Freedom Code of Conduct system as it interferes with the intended sandbox aspect of activities in Wurm Online. Everyone has the ability to prosper under the protections of a village deed either by obtaining and planting a deed yourself, or by joining with friends. While joining a deed is encouraged, living and working off deed is still possible. Should you decide to live off deed in the wilderness, you are solely responsible for the maintenance and security of your items and animals. To this end you are solely responsible for any losses of items and animals etc... This includes making sure that all boats, carts, wagons, containers, gates, doors, etc. are properly locked and managed.
  15. 2 points
Those are usually MMOs that have raids, where you need to be sure that everyone who joins a raid will be pulling their own weight, not just being carried by the rest of the raid. It's a LOT different when you're talking about 25+ people spending hours together doing a group-related activity, where having a few slackers can be the difference between success and wasting everyone's time. There is no such pressure in Wurm; on the PvE side, any community actions (like, say, building an enormous bridge) are limited by whether you can do it or not - people generally don't care if you're failing 90% of your attempts to add that brick, as long as you're actually participating. And there's no bling-y rewards in these, just the personal satisfaction of making something that improves the area. A guy who has 30.01 Masonry and ends up adding just one brick out of the 10,000 needed is still a valued contribution that assisted in the success.

"Oh cool I like this outfit what is he wering?" VS " He I have see you have Blacksmith and Mining 90 can you PLS imp my stuff and best do it for free since its so esay for you" " he this new guy in our Village don´t have grindet any skills yesterday I look it up my self we shuld kick him" Need more examples why this is not a good idea? Of cours we have Titles were you can show of a bit and this is a Choise you do on your own. Skills are somthing you don´t want to be to often compare to other people since it creat a loop of problems with selfconfidents for some persons. QL of stuff don`t say a lot about your skill you could have bought it, trade it or you was reaöy lazy/dedicatet during the Imping.

As original players of EverQuest when it started up, my sister and I hosted a Wurm Unlimited server back in 2015 named EverWurm. We are bringing it back up ( on a different server of course ) and a new map along with quite a few mostly Quality of Life mods. Q. So what is the driving factor to do this? A. We have played on several servers recently and all were good for awhile until eventually things seemed to fall apart. We want a reliable environment that is able to be adjusted as the community needs change. We will be willing to make changes right away as we experience the same things, and listen to the players. We have a small 11 x 11 'safe area' setup that new players will spawn into that has an oven, forge, FSB, BSB, and fencing to protect new players until you can fend for yourself. We are currently set to use: x3.0 skill gain, x5.0 action timers, PvE 4k by 4k Map ( I will be posting it soon ) and the following mods: Ago Mods: Announcer, CropMod, HarvestHelper, HTTPServer, InbreedWarning, ScriptRunner, ServerMap Bdew Mods: Better Digging, Better Farming, Movement Tweaks, Hitching Limits, HotS Fixes, Fix Guards, Taxidermy, Archaeology Tweaks, Waxed Food, Fishy Tweaks We also want to get Discord Relay going in the next day or two. Let us know if you are interested in trying us out! We want to give a few days notice ( mods are not yet setup ) to be ready to start at same time, instead of just opening up and those on first get a huge head start. We are going to resurrect our old web site and will post it after cleaning it up. ( low priority currently ) Lastly, we could really use some people to create characters and test the mods listed. The server people have indicated they have been installed. It is registered at https://wurm-unlimited.com/server/9755

While I am certain your "legal background" checks out; you'll have to forgive me for not considering it trustworthy. Attempting to compare the ideas of democratically (or judicially) imposed law to dictatorial law would be quite foolish as both of the former require justification or a case made (with this being made public), whereas the latter does not. No-one is arguing against the power being in the hands of the game developers, we are merely questioning their reasoning which appears reasonable in and of itself. Refusing an explenation is quite within their rights; though this may well be interpreted as quite sinister by some. Especially given that this rule was put in place due to the removal of RMT and no-one wants to be under any doubt of the matter. Now, if the devs simply say "we are deliberately leaving this area grey because we want to judge each point on a case by case basis as we're doing this by gut feeling to allow players as much freedom as possible without annoying Steam" then that would be a simple and logical reason that everyone could get behind.

Completely understandable. Once this is installed on a server, the next startup of that server will initialize a table in the modsupport.db file (I use DB Browser for SQLite to interact with it). Once that is done, any entries you add to the table will get applied on the following restart. As an example, I added a difficulty override for making lumps through alchemy on a challenge map that I am helping manage (The Winter Expanse). So for each of the basic metal lumps, I created a record in the itemOverrides table, where the templateId was the ID for the item I want to override, in my case, we'll use gold lumps for the example, so 44. Then in that same row in the database, I changed difficulty to 25, which would indicate that (I could be wrong on my calculations here), that with 25 skill, you would have approximately 50% chance of making the item. Ultimately, what this does is remove the need for specific mods for item edits, and instead pull them out to the database, which is much easier to edit, and once you understand the table, incredibly easy to make a large quantity of changes. (I'll try to get some images uploaded of the database entries so it is easier to see what I'm talking about)

I truly hope that you really are just trolling with this topic.... because the idea that you might actually believe not just the things that you are saying - but also believe that your ideas are the correct ones to have... is just honestly scaring me right now. Why does paying for YOUR game give you the right to know information about MY game. We share a virtual world, not a bank account.

No, nobody is attacking you for this idea. People are getting frustrated with your particular brand of "discussion" that includes the virtual equivalent of foot-stomping "because I want it" on your side of the discussion and a complete failure to evince any real comprehension of the objections. Thus, people give up addressing your idea and begin trying to address your interlocution.

Back in the early 90s used to have to fix major hard drive issues with low level format, effectively zerobyting the hard drive, hence the name was born haha. On the new servers couldn't think of a name (was 3.30am waiting for the cluster to first open) and was looking at a model of the saturn 5 I'd built a couple of weeks earlier, hence the new name (Saturnfive) Early days geez, sucked in by someone else who kept pestering me to try it, was 2 maps before gold if i remember, had to mine iron from the surface (no tunneling then) a shaft was the weapon of choice. Got suckled into pvp by watching sye and icedevil mash whitelighters (was only one server then) Loved it, long story short LO was born (many stories there in itself) one memorable was getting a weeks holiday from Rolf for killing players around new town with thunderstruck haha

I am honest with the people who I am friends with. But I don't see why random people need to know my business. If we are talking about real world here, does your boss know everything that happens in your home life??? No that would just be stupid. But that doesn't mean you are deceiving your boss. It's just not relevant information that they need to know.
  36. 1 point
That's not how this should work and you know it. There is no way to realisticly always keep that distance from another, unless you forever sit on deed. And you should not expect others to keep '3-4 tiles away' from another. Please do that irl, but not ingame. Again a community variant for this exists, and if it were ever to make it ingame it would be opt-in and not opt-out. Players deserve their privacy.
  37. 1 point
Let me just bring one Point into this discussion why i think Rules have to be precise (especially if you sell virtual currency to Users): Not all Users are native speakers or good in your language , so you have to keep riles simple precise and not interpretable. This is exactly where this "grey zones" can get a problem.

Because i don't want you to know my skills. Or anyone else for that matter. That's why i never uploaded them to Niarja. Feel free to compete with other players who want to compete and/or show off their skills. Niarja exists for that reason. In-game solution would need an opt-in toggle.

Currently on the pvp servers and can't access trade chat without an alt Separating personal pm's from trade pm's Sleeping in a bed for sleep bonus while not playing but still accessing trade via alt Most form of traders rely on return buyers and hiding behind alts or nicknames wouldn't be beneficial for them, a large majority of the playerbase has premium alts so a premium requirement does nothing, i'm not really sure why you'd want a nickname thing if the problem is that people are hiding behind other names? What does this suggestion supposed to solve?

I have a little experience brewing IRL in my room. Water + honey + various berries mashed up in a fermenting container = mixed berry mead, or melomel. There are all sorts of combinations you should be able to make. Allowing more affinity combinations by adding other ingredients to the wine barrel would be good too. Side note here - if you want to go for realism, drinks like cider and mead improve with time as well. If I start drinking mead straight away it will be cloudy and the yeast in it can effect the taste and feel of the drink. IRL there are ways to speed this up (cold crash, finings, filters) but Wurm only lets you wait.

I have to say, I was initially against the idea of raid windows. But after 2 weeks on the new Defiance server, I've seen a lot of deeds popping up that likely wouldn't have been possible to maintain on previous PvP servers. These deeds could be described as "Freedom-esque", as they're smaller and more open, often along major highways and without dirt walls. I feel like these types of deeds create a really good balance on the server, offering more variety within the community as well as interesting areas where conflicts can occur. I'm optimistic that with the raid windows in place, these types of deeds will continue to be viable for people who wish to live away from the front lines and wardeeds. And to any PvE'ers reading, I encourage you to give Defiance a try! Edit: Although I still think the raid window size should increase the further away from the starter zone a deed is placed. Deeds close to the centre of the map should be raidable 24/7. This would continue to enforce the "front line" idea.

iirc, WU got the option to plant the pole and do it alone, could be the same here for the small gaps (maybe up to 3-5 tiles). While logging an alt in and using it to hold the pole is a common trick for us old players... with the steam, release a bit of QoL update, for the new players would be nice.

I played Everquest starting in 2000.. I picked this name originally for an woodelf druid, Silvirwolfe Darkmoon as it seemed to fit with her at the time. I had also recreated her on a different server as a barbie shaman. This name (and a few others that I now have as alts in Wurm) have traveled across many games. From pen and paper dnd, to EQ2, DND online, LoTRO, WoW... She's seen a lot in her lifetime. (Also, anyone that knows me well, knows that I am a fan of wolves and anything silver, as my collection of horses in game will show)

My preferred gamename started in the 80s. If I had to provide a name for a game, I went with Loki, because it suited my play style - in competitive play I would always like to hide my strategy and misdirect, and set up for contingencies well ahead when they might be needed, or sometimes do something that would make no sense to anybody but me (or sometimes not even to me) just for fun and to create confusion. There is also the aspect that in play I never forget that it is play, so I have no lasting stake in it and can merrily wear the cost to myself of doing odd things just for the fun of it even it hurts my interests in the game. As games started to go online, I found Loki used a fair bit (especially in recent years since Marvel co-opted the name in the mass consciousness) so changed the spelling to LowKey - still pronounced the same but taking in another aspect of my play, where I would just be about my business and not be too confrontational, i.e. low key. I was never a fan of just adding numbers to the end, so as LowKey became less available I would use variants by adding spaces or switching to leet (iirc in Halo I used L0K1). I would also employee Tricksy (which did cause some people to assume I am female) or Trixter, or LowKey the Trickster and other such variants on the theme (I had online dealing with another trickster going by Til Eulenspiel so although I had been tempted to start using other tricksters, that made me stick with the Loki variants). I am very late to Wurm, so wound up with Thetrickster which I am kind-of okay with, but it doesn't abbreviate very well - "LK" is a perfectly fine abbreviation for Loki in all it's variants and I would like to get the Loki bit back into my handle.

So, gonna age myself here. LONG ago there were various online chat and places you could go to play games like chess, cards, and word games against other players in real time. I played euchre, poker, scrabble, and occasionally other games using the name ChampagneDreams_BeerBudget. Actually that was my second name, gonna digress and tell you the story of my first name: MaggieMae1967. Maggie Mae was my dog's name at the time, and 1967 being my birth year. This was in the age of A/S/L. All the pervs would hang out and ask anyone appearing female ASL and proceed to try to hit on you in the early, immature ways of the social internet. I was there to just play games. Well, one night I got sick of it so one night I answered 64/male/San Fran (cause I am a bit of a smartass) When he stammered... but.. your name.. And I told him yes, but in 1967 I was sitting on the pier in San Fran and realized I was a female trapped in a male's body, and that's when Maggie Mae was born. Remember, this was over 20 years ago, when we weren't as socially aware. I got called a myriad of names. Well, I continued to use that response until I was sick of it, then decided I needed a name that was ambiguous, and was tongue in cheek. That's when ChampagneDreams came about. So in one of those game rooms, playing chess using the ChampagneDreams name I met my now significant other. We played a lot of games together, chatted, just chilled. We lived 6 hours apart and one day he said "let's meet for dinner". We did. Many times. Then we started living together. One day I got angry about something and he called me a dragon. He started calling me dragon whenever I was being intense about something. Then he convinced me to try Planetside (the old, original one) with him. I went to create a character and started to put in Champagne, and he was like... no has to be dragon something.. so ChampagneDragon came about.

They used to have paper writs for deed property. I can't recall now if it was at one time for houses, too, long ago. So many things have changed. They were actually a complete pain, and this "fiddling with permissions" system they have now instead is a huge improvement. If you want to trade a cart or a boat or a house, you can now do in through the MANAGE permissions without needed to sort through dozens of "writ" papers. You even can do this "COD" if you have one party send a "bill" through the mail (woodscraps are common for this) then the seller can change ownership in the Permissions management panels. It's a huge huge improvement over what they used to have. Nobody wants to have their inventory cluttered with "papers" any more. Or keys, or tokens. We did that once, and it sucked. edit: I double checked and yeah we used to have them for houses, as well as for deeds. Trust me, they were really no fun. You were always searching through your pack and all containers looking for the right one, and you could never "drop" a backpack or any container that had a writ in it (although you could trade them in the trading window). No one who has ever played under both systems, would ever want to go back. https://www.wurmpedia.com/index.php/Historical:Writ_of_Ownership
