Wurm Online is a game that's been around for over two million years*, Wurm Online is a game that has gone through the toughest hardships a game that an online game depending on a subscribing playerbase can go through, but there's this bloody pesky player base who loves this game, and refuses to let it die. They do critisise, a lot, they lecture the developers and the people in charge they critsise and lecture them to death, they whine until there's no single drop of fluid left in their body that could produce another tear, but at the end of the day... they keep playing this game, Wurm Online. Because they love it regardless. I could start naming players, to no end. Now we are in the modern day Wurm Online. Releasing on Steam has been a topic of the past. Have we, 10 or so years ago, imagined how that would go, how it would be? We probably had our imaginations. Do the Steam players know about our past? How will they react, if they learn that "Wurm Online" is not a "new game" being released on Steam? Do they care? So there's this one dude, not sure if you know him yet, some old Dutch guy, developed an addiction... uh, I mean love for the game and a mind of his own, wanting to do things. So he decided he wanted to visit people IRL who play Wurm and interview them. I'm not advertising him because I'm on that list. It's just simply amazing and awe-inspiring. He started out today with visiting Elwood, if you're a Wurm Veteran, Elwood is probably something like a well known brand... OH YEAH, WOOD SCRAP! I would like to fully endorse this Twitch channel of MacOofer Jellyfish, stay tuned for more real-life meetings, but also don't be too harsh on the premiere with the one and the only, Elwood. Uhm yeah, I think that's all I wanted to say. I'm sorry, I'm a bit drunk too. * This is an estimation, which might be slighlty off.

Hi guys! I have created an in depth video guide to the tutorial and getting started in Wurm Online. If you have any troubles understanding how to get through the tutorial or want some general starting information, join me as I walk through the tutorial and explain things as I go along

Create a WU server with these changes and see how well it all goes over. After all, that is what WU is for.

Also, just to clarify, though it's common for some players to refer to the new set of Northern Freedom Isles servers as 'Steam servers', in reality they're not. Any player can create a new character to play on one of the newer servers whether they're using the new Steam client or not. It's just that once you create a character using the Steam client, that character can only be played with the Steam client. Likewise, creating a character under the traditional standalone client means that character can only be played with the traditional standalone client. I believe the confusion of 'steam servers' came about because the opening of the new set of Northern Freedom Isles servers coincided with the release of the Steam client, but they're in no way tied to it (or vice-versa).

This means absolutely nothing... Give a concrete term not something that cannot be quantified.

despite all rational thought telling me to avoid this like the plague.... 1. Fix first, Solve after So, um, I was once given some advice about sinking ships. Something along the lines of first fix the thing that's actually threatening you (pump out the water before the ship sinks) and then after that, you can take the time to solve what was wrong underneath (find the hole in the hull & patch it). Anyway, it seemed to me that there was a lot of people trying to point out holes.... so I posted a reply chain over on Massively that I tried to focus more on bailin' out the poor newbie who had obviously gotten seriously far off the intended course. 2. The thing about a "community" is that everyone is part of it... So while we share in the community's successes .... all of us also have a share in the community's problems, and failures. Maybe some folks, or some groups of folks, have a bit more of a responsibility - and therefore a bit more of the blame when things go sideways. But everyone here participates in co-creating this community. Every one of us participates in shaping Wurm. I've done my share of selfish things, or talking too much, or holding a grudge when I really should have just let things go. Are staff supportive and protective of players that support and protect Wurm, and the staff? Of course. Does it cross lines into insiders and outsiders? Probably yeah. Probably more than it should. But we would all be hard-pressed to name even one organization or institution inside or outside of Wurm that doesn't operate exactly the same. Seriously - from labor unions all the way up to American Senators. We all know that a persons' resume doesn't get the job - it's who you know. I'm not saying it's right, or it's fair. But it exists. Are ex-players bitter and cynical, and prone to particularly salty BB posts? Well, yeah - wouldn't you? If you felt that something you wanted to enjoy had done you wrong - if you had a mental list of experiences and grievances, some of which are in fact rooted in actual, valid criticism? If I felt that the exact people who were supposed to be leaders and guides, mentors and examples for the community... if those were the specific people who had given you the boot? I'm not saying it's right, or that it's fair. But it exists. 3. What is this Forum Topic, Even? I'm seeing a lot of responses so far that are in part, or in full, asking what OP is saying, or what's the underlying point here. So, here's a couple thoughts - first, even if I agree with the sentiment, it is factually true that Wurm staff really don't have any sort of authority to direct Wurmian's actions when they are out of Wurm, so-to-speak. All that the leadership of Wurm can do ... is ask. So that's how I'm reading this topic from Retrograde. I am aware that I'm being charitable with this; tryin to read things in a positive light however possible. But I'm like that, always trying to assume good intent. Here's this post from the Wurm Elders talking about kindness, and talking about community. And representing Wurm. Being a Wurmian, when ever and where ever Wurm is the topic of conversation. When I read over this, I am reminded about doing my best to put my best foot forward. If I enjoy a thing... why wouldn't I always want to show others the good aspects of the thing? Show others the reasons why I got so involved, found so much worth enjoying? I generally want others to think well of me - or at least, as well as possible. I also generally want others to at least respect the interests and hobbies I have, if not come to enjoy and share them too. Wurm is not perfect. The Wurm community is not perfect. Everyone here has at least one thing that they've got beef about - there are always new posts in the Wurm forums with suggestions, bug reports, support tickets, and "rigorous" disagreements. There always will be... but, as a gamer, I can also easily see that it's in my own interest for the game I am playing to grow. More people joining translates to more cash flow. In the modern world for better or for worse, cash flow equals more man hours, more hands on deck, more development, more features, more and better updates. And I guess that's what I would boil it down to right now. Can Wurm tell you, a person, how to act or speak, outside of the TOS for Wurm, the game? No. Absolutely not. Can you, a person, chose to listen to what's going on and decide for yourself what sort of behavior and what sort of P.R. will benefit you, the Wurm player? Yes. Absolutely, you get to make that decision for yourself, and you alone. Is it possible to make a decision about kindness and community and representing Wurm that is mutually beneficial to you and to Wurm / other Wurmians? ..... Well, I guess each person gets to decide that answer for themselves. Edited to Add: I meant to include a link to my comment thread on Massively. I hope I did right by y'all - my fellow Wurmians - and I'm open to additional comments and suggestions for doing better in the future. Thanks 💜 https://massivelyop.com/2020/09/08/choose-my-adventure-mining-misadventures-in-wurm-online/#comment-765254

Nah. Just can't let this slide away this easily. This throws away too easily the opinion of players who were disgusted at the below-par publicity. Some now claim this was just "let's play", no journalism and whether person doing it was any professional or not. We are told we should not criticize him as he is only amateur/reporter off-duty... Well, fine, but, there is roughly two ways doing "let's play" online. * 1. You know something about a game already and state your understanding and expectation upfront, so people can understand your angle to approach the game. 2. Completely new and not knowing anything about said game. Now first option means you have some knowledge and ability to research about the game. Also ability to put things in scope and understand something about the game. Second means and requires(!) that you approach the game with open mindset (doesn't hurt in first case either). Sorry, I don't see this person succeeding in either case. He seems to have some knowledge about wurm but refuses to understand what he sees/reads or to research basics. Usually in life if everything and everyone around you seems to be somehow wrong, isn't that a clue you should maybe consider there is something wrong about how you are doing things? Maybe see if there is a different way, instead of keeping bashing your head against the wall? Then again, it is easier to jump on soap-box and blast away...And internet pays per clicks... I'm glad I don't need to work with that person and probably live in different country. He reminds me of two comic strips. One has a kid dropping some garbage on the street and father scolds him: Couldn't you just walk two steps over there to drop it in that bin? Kid points at his feet and responds: But it wasn't right here! (Sorry, don't have copyright to post picture here) The other comic is one I drew long ago. There a ram keeps headbutting a concrete skyscraper. Repeating: Eventually he will yield! Next picture shows post-apocalypse world with concrete building collapsed and ram's skeleton next to it. He was right after all... (And sorry no picture of that either, couldn't find it) Then again, internet is full of games and full of people trying to make a few bucks by writing/blogging/playing/streaming them. Some are professional and some amateur, some are excellent and some awful and the whole mix in between. This probably got way more publicity than it should just because people felt insulted on the poor performance of his and on supposedly trustworthy platform. On the other hand it just shows how much people care about this game. If it meant nothing, people wouldn't pay attention to trolls. *(Usually for any "let's play" it is better to do it as streaming or recorded video, because then people can easily follow what you are doing and experiencing things along. When written, they have to trust what you are telling, which leaves huge gap for (mis)interpretation. Also your responsibility to provide information is exponentially bigger than with video. You give the picture. When writing, you describe it all and any truth or untruth there is your making.)

@AmadeeWe are walking in circles. They call themselves reporters, journalists, this is a media company, and they are its employees they are supposed to abide to journalist standards (like doing research BEFORE writing editorials). You can't turn on/off the standard for your position or profession when you see fit. You either are a journalist or not. These are bad practices, bad journalism and in fact it is trolling - I have a feeling these articles were meant to aggravate us to bring traffic. I am out of this discussion. I said everything I had to say here.

Emphasis added. Amazon's new MMO, New World, was originally designed with the intent of being a three-faction PVP-centric game. They soon discovered that they had a problem with testing. Experienced Alpha testers were ganking the newbies at the first opportunity, which turned the new testers off from continuing to playtest the game. So they took away any actual rewards from killing people outside of a limited level range. The experienced players kept ganking newbies. Devs added some level protection where if the level difference was too great, the higher-level attacker would do minimal damage. So the gankers grouped up to gank newbies. So they pleaded to the community directly, pointing out that ganking the newbies was drastically reducing their playtest pool, and that they needed the testers, so please stop killing new players. The gankers kept on ganking newbies. The Devs threatened that if the newbie ganking didn't stop, they'd be forced to take open-world PvP completely out of the game, and then they'd not be able to gank anyone ever again. The gankers kept ganking newbies. So Open World reluctantly, and with a heavy sigh, removed open-world PvP from New World completely. The only PvP left in the game are in opt-in situations, Battlegrounds and Territory Wars, which do not take place in the open-world areas. Congratulations, gankers. You ganked yourselves. Edit: Here's an article about it.

Every game that has tried to encourage (force) pve players to need pvp targets has crashed and burned. Runescape has added hundreds of hours of pve content over the years, and almost no pvp content. The pvp areas are deserted. 4 or 5 mmos i've tested in the last few years tried the encourage pvp and as such never had a big pve market and I didn't play and turned into flops. Shroud of the Avatar announced a huge pvp requirement at the start, and over time (and much to the horror of pvp crowd) virtually eliminated pvp from the game. Some big PVP games like Archeage I really wanted to get into, but no way I was going to be beholden to a kingdom for protection while I farm. Devs should learn, you can make a pve game, or a pvp game, don't try to get pve players to finance your pvp game. And pvp players should stop trying to lure sheep into their flocks to be fleeced, cause it turns players off the entire genre, not just the pvp side of the games. That's simple, buy a deed. Then your resources are safe.

Aye, but the real cash influx from a lot of mmo's out there isn't from subscriptions but from microtransactions. Keep in mind there are actually very few games that still use the subscription model. Wow comes to mind, but then again Activision has so much money at this point they don't really need it. How you implement microtransactions is another thing. If you use a purely cosmetic shop or minor game conveniences then sure, a microtransaction shop would be harmless. I mean I really can't call it game breaking to buy things like : +1 hour sleep bonus cap, or caring for an extra creature, or a unique skin, etc. It really doesn't give you any advantage over others. But it could give Wurm some financial boosts over time. Honestly personally I'd just rather have a shop where it says " This monthly shield skin for only 1.99 EUR" or "Care for 1 more creature for 4.99 EUR or care for 10 more creatures for 40 EUR" rather than having to pay premium, in order to get marks, so I can get the skin or extra creature slots. Hell you might even make more money long term that way. Just my 2 coppers there. The farmers and breeders might be happy due to that. But a shop that actively allows you to buy ingame advantages such as rare armors, skill boosters, affinity tokens, that's a big no no for me. The delineation is where it offers a competitive advantage in pvp or where in Pve it creates artificial limitations to those who don't purchase from the shop.

At the risk of sounding like I am staff bashing, I do not think the Wurm Online staff is in a position to dictate how we behave in a platform that is not their own. In these websites we are not in a contractual relationship with Wurm nor do we have a duty to 'behave'. Many of these sites are not even in the same country as Code Clubs and are not even regulated by the same laws. I believe criticizing our behavior as a 'community' elsewhere is an overreach and bad form. Keep your moderation to Wurm Online, where we are bound to your EULA and TOS. What we do elsewhere is not your concern. My 2i

One should be very careful in calling someone a liar and ascribing malicious intent when they may merely be confused and misinformed. The guy was trying to make steel, for the misguided purpose of making steel & flint. If you look up steel lump, it makes references to charcoal. https://www.wurmpedia.com/index.php/Steel_lump Those of us who know the game know forges and iron and steel & flint, etc, etc. It was also noted by someone in comments that the steel & flint was missing from the newbie packs for a short time. Wow, a bug in Wurm? lol. Go figure, but anyway. To give the guy the benefit of the doubt, I tried to follow his (il)logic and I can see where he got the impression since if you've never played, you don't even know what to look up on the wiki sometimes, much less how to interpret it. He did call finding info a "rabbit hole." That alone should tell you he was struggling. Sorry if I sound like I'm defending the guy, when in truth he may not deserve defending. But on the other hand, I think a lot of people are jumping to some very toxic conclusions that may not even be true.

I beg to differ. If anything written in these two short articles, would have been addressed ingame, most of us, be it in CA help, local, kingdom, or in pm, would have reacted in kind, calmly explaining that the game is indeed old, some of the mechanics may appear weird (often to us, too ), that much is hard for a beginner. We would have pointed to misconceptions in a friendly way, offering advice and assistance. The author of those "misadventures" was aware that he was damaging Wurm by his account. He did, as a journalist, not the least bother for background research and information, and from his report, not at all in asking anyone for advice, though that is the most valuable resource at hand in any game. Not even trying to tap that resource is showing incompetence, or malice.

The economy in Wurm has always been this way. It is what make it great. The market is dynamic and flows with the natural laws of supply and demand. As more boats enter the market, prices will fall. After it does this, there will be those who complain that it’s not even worth it to make boats to sell because they are so cheap. People will always complain that others are setting their prices too high, but the reality is...if they set their prices lower, it would get bought up before you even had a chance to see it being sold. The market determines the prices that will remain posted. You only see that guy advertising his Knarr for 80s because no one will pay that much, so he posts it over again. It is important to the economy that he does this so that others see that they can post their knarr for 70s to undercut him. As more knarrs are constructed, the price will drop dramatically. The prices should not be based on what things are worth on the old servers. That would completely defeat the purpose of a natural player driven economy.

I've noticed that if you try to lead animals around the corner of a house, instead of pathing around it like they do with fences, they just stop being led period if you cut the corner too sharp. This leads to situations where it is impossible to pull animals out of buildings if you have a 1 tile road between structures or it being extremely hard to lead animals through narrows areas in general without them getting stuck. Shouldn't this work similar to how animals view fences when being led?

Yes, they found it out, after completely ignoring the lessons learned over the last 30 years of RPG PvP gaming (including the pre-MMO stuff, like MUDs). They thought that the others were just doing it wrong. And the major overhauls of limiting and then removing open-world PvP only happened after they jettisoned the one lead dev who was gung ho about making the whole game a bloody battlefield.

Honestly why was this topic made other then to stir this up from being a random post 90% of the forum users ignore and bump it up to 90% of the forum users watch read and comment on? Why are you stoking the fire even more? Setting aside the whole back and forth of who did what in here 1 thing i do have to agree with to a degree, what we do elsewhere should be of no concern to you if i walk out and bad mouth wurm at a event of 100k people i should be able to do that perfectly fine without any issue so long as im not stating lies and ###### The same goes for the author mind you he should be allowed to voice his opinion but make it clear where his lack of knowledge and thus idea's come from (stating one refuses to read the wiki or ask for help wasnt a good move on that part) Just like with on steam every single disgruntled person(and there seem to be quite a few) should be allowed to voice their say on there because hey its steam reviews are we going to make a topic in town square and in city hall every time a "journalist" writes a bad piece and people come out to either bad mouth the game/share their opinion? Again this topic serves no purpose other then to try and get people to become more heated and "provide proof" that the wurm community is "bad" when infact its just people talking about stuff and sometimes going a bit to far and thus this should be in woodscraps right along all other topics of this nature that are in there

Hi!:0 I was wondering if you could add an option in settings to enable Faith Bonus to show in the buffs bar with the power number on the icon? I know one can use the hud settings -- spell effects to enable that window but this would be a good QoL addition for many priests in my opinion.

You will not find it under **Opinions** nor **Columns** nor **News**. Hahahaha like it would matter what they say anyway how many people really sit through those posts and go "oh so its a shitty game because he started it out and was saying how he wasnt going to use the resources at hand to learn about it and believes its got some weird bs going on this game must suck" I read through it and all i wanted to do is call his boss tell them to take it down throw ca help and global and the wiki at their faces and tell them to read and ask questions they are reporters and reporters have a task to report the truth not lies so them stating they wont use the wiki and then getting confused and then only reading part of the wiki and then going "herp derp i dont know how this works" like come on This is the same bs that has happened in the past with "popular" people coming to wurm the staff try to accommodate and be all caring and try to stand up for them when the community calls them out for their bs(remember bashur anyone?) and its not until later on that staff go "oh ya maybe we should actually listen to the community as a whole" As for what he wrote? he clearly needs to accept that asking questions in ca is something you do or you watch yt vids or read the wiki we do this for every game if it was a "honest first impression" review then sure i can understand not wanting to use outside sources and experience it yourself with no help and struggle like hell but it isnt its a written style lets play which is supposed to be entertaining and a learning experience for people who are potentially wanting to play the game so do your dam homework People who think "oh no this is going to ruin wurm we must be all nice and kind to these people" are wrong wurm survived a bunch of "famous" and "big" youtubers and wanna be journalists trashing the game over the years with their made up bs or straight up ignorance and refusal to learn how to play and it will do so here again If he quits because 3-4 people call him out for being an idiot then please as your job is a journalist get a thicker skin or stop being a journalist and remember 3-4 people does not mean the entire community so anyone spouting bs of "oh it paints the whole community in a bad light" is just trying to make this issue way bigger then it is In the end this is but 1 random post on a place that holds no real power written by a guy who thinks he can learn to fly a spaceshuttle without going through training and frankly that is what wurm is a spaceshuttle of a game to try and act like it isnt is just silly its not a simple game it never will be you want simple go play minecraft Its sad how people want to defend him when he clearly did a bad job like no you did a bad job we will call you out on it not doing so leads to arrogance and more bs(looking at you fox news and cnn as 2 examples)

I must say that though WS is slow, I never really disliked it. I was, admittedly, worried, when my noobie longsword got repaired below ql40, but then realized that with my modest skill of 25 I was able to raise the ql of my self crafted reserve longsword higher than that. And soon I was able to imp beyond 50. Since then, my WS skill rose slowly, but everytime I spent an hour or two on it, I made some progress (>.10 skill) and am now, proudly , aiming to get over skill 70. Not impressive, but even now I can maintain any weapon above ql70 which is ok for all practical purposes in PvE. I was never really frustrated grinding WS, in sharp contrast to pottery, which rises an order of magnitude faster but drives you crazy with nearly impossibility to come even close to "sweet spot" qualities, and makes LMC compulsory not to lose all tediously and frustratingly won progress. Were it for skills like that only, I would certainly have given up Wurm. WS in contrast always gave and gives a feeling of accomplishment. Don't touch it, please.

First, I like that you have fun, and hope for much of it for all on the new cluster. As to "the older servers", I live on Xanadu, and find it alive as ever, same with the rest of the cluster. Right yesterday. we had a slaying of a red dragon on Independence, accidential find by a roadbuilder, real fun (I got killed once lol). With Mark Twain, the reports of our death are highly exaggerated. Have fun, and keep on wurming.

I agree about the Northern economics. I have seen an item for sale in the north at more than 1000% of its southern value. I privately mentioned this to the seller/crafter and they blamed the high cost of BUYING their raw materials and complained about how their suppliers were gouging (at about 500% above SFI value). It is plainly not sustainable and it seems that many are trying to grab as much as they can before it collapses, ignoring that it is this grabbing as much as you can that will cause the collapse. People simply cannot afford to keep paying large amounts of money to pour in the large amounts of ingame currency required. I think the race by players to establish themselves as merchants is misguided - they are treating a brand new server environment as if it were a matured environment where the "frontier" has been settled and development enough to support this kind of business practice. The northern economy should really still be firmly agragrian and cottage-industrial. I haven't been back to the north since my first few days. I could hardly move on Melody due to lag and frankly couldn't find room to do much more than dig. The number of mobs I saw going down under mobs of players was kind of amusing, though. From what I can see in the market threads here, I won't be participating in the economy when I do go back. If I can't make it, beg for it or barter for it I will just do without. However, I don't agree that the old servers are dead. I am on Release and the numbers seem (at least subjectively to me) to be about the same, although fluctuating a bit more of late. There is still active development, and e.g. trade chat is active. Importantly, although there is infrastructure (not least in importance/effect is a highway system with guard towers) there is also room for plenty to settle. If I was on Melody, I would try to find something I could produce to sell at "reasonable markup" so that I could a) advertise it in trade chat and b) thereafter point out how cheap it can be whenever someone tries to sell similar for a couple of limbs. I am not there, so can only say what I would do, which is constantly point out how overpriced things are. Actually I may even pop in every now and then to promote the idea in chat that those who are disenchanted with the northern economy could restart in the south, where it is the player who is welcomed rather than their fat purse.
