On this night...19 years ago, 246 people went to sleep in preparation for their morning flights. 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning tomorrow. 343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift. 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift of saving lives. None of them saw past 10:00 am Sept 11, 2001. In one single moment life may never be the same. As you live and enjoy the breaths you take today and tonight before you go to sleep in preparation for your life tomorrow, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted. Never forget. 🇺🇸

Hi everyone, I know that throughout the last few months we have had a massive influx of new players, and I know dealing with the same question about flattening a tile can get a bit much. What I have been noticing is that a few people have had issues with understanding the game and have struggled more than others. In instances like these, it's essential to take extra steps to ensure that we treat these people with the kindness and openness in the community that we pride. Wurm is an incredibly in-depth game, and it's that depth and breadth that sucked me into the world, and I know it's the same for you. That starting step though can be incredibly challenging, and I noticed in the recent thread by MassivelyOP some players felt that the blogger was misrepresenting the game. While I do appreciate those of you willing to step up and help players who struggle with the mechanics, please keep in mind that when you do post on these forums, you are representing the entire Wurm community with you. A player feeling overwhelmed by the amount of depth and choice the game gives them may seem off-putting to some, but I know many would love the idea of a game being as in-depth as Wurm is, so please do treat everyone with kindness even if they do struggle with the game. The Wurm community is something I take a lot of pride in as a community manager, and I know you all do too, so let's make sure that we always put our best foot forward! Retro

At the risk of sounding like I am staff bashing, I do not think the Wurm Online staff is in a position to dictate how we behave in a platform that is not their own. In these websites we are not in a contractual relationship with Wurm nor do we have a duty to 'behave'. Many of these sites are not even in the same country as Code Clubs and are not even regulated by the same laws. I believe criticizing our behavior as a 'community' elsewhere is an overreach and bad form. Keep your moderation to Wurm Online, where we are bound to your EULA and TOS. What we do elsewhere is not your concern. My 2i

Hi! Can we please be given the option to lead animals that are hitched to carts and wagons? It should work the same as leading an unhitched animal and in order to have the vehicle follow you around you should need to lead all the hitched animals to it. So 2x for a cart and 4x for a wagon but nobody will cry if you just make it so that only one hitched animal need to be lead because i would imagine that would be more newbie friendly (no need for multiple ropes or halter rope) and would be easier to code? The reason for this request is that people could go around on foot, woodcutting or diggin or mining and lead the hitched animals to a cart or a wagon so that they can put the contents of their actions in the crates inside them. Also if you want to drop dirt could be helpfull do to it on foot while you lead the cart/wagon with the dirt inside and is following you around. It would be really nice not having to backtrack all the time to go get your vehicle then retrace your steps from pile to pile to decide what you are gonna put into crates. This way it would be easy: you cut mine or dig... look in the pile... get what you want in the vehicle crates and move along while the vehicle follows you around.

Emphasis added. Amazon's new MMO, New World, was originally designed with the intent of being a three-faction PVP-centric game. They soon discovered that they had a problem with testing. Experienced Alpha testers were ganking the newbies at the first opportunity, which turned the new testers off from continuing to playtest the game. So they took away any actual rewards from killing people outside of a limited level range. The experienced players kept ganking newbies. Devs added some level protection where if the level difference was too great, the higher-level attacker would do minimal damage. So the gankers grouped up to gank newbies. So they pleaded to the community directly, pointing out that ganking the newbies was drastically reducing their playtest pool, and that they needed the testers, so please stop killing new players. The gankers kept on ganking newbies. The Devs threatened that if the newbie ganking didn't stop, they'd be forced to take open-world PvP completely out of the game, and then they'd not be able to gank anyone ever again. The gankers kept ganking newbies. So Open World reluctantly, and with a heavy sigh, removed open-world PvP from New World completely. The only PvP left in the game are in opt-in situations, Battlegrounds and Territory Wars, which do not take place in the open-world areas. Congratulations, gankers. You ganked yourselves. Edit: Here's an article about it.

Same here. It was indeed a sad day in history. I remember where I was, what I was doing, and how I was feeling as I watched in horror. 19 years, wow. Many of the people we interact with on a daily basis now weren't even born yet or were so young they don't really remember, except maybe vaguely. And so many today want to pretend it's just history with no relevance, and not just this but many other things too. And many these days are even actively trying to erase so much of our history altogether so that no one will be "disturbed" by it. That's really too bad because the old saying about history repeating itself if we fail to remember is all too true. We really do need to be "disturbed" by much of our history and remember it as though it was yesterday and could happen again any time if we're not very careful.

We're not against this, there's just certain technical limitations that prevent us from adding it to non-inventory and non-bulk container windows. It's something we'll still try to add in though.

Well, happy to see the /balances command, far better than directing new players to the nearest deed token to check their bank balances, to be honest this is a command that should have been available long ago, just goes to show, suggestions do get noticed

That's also the point I was trying to make as well. TOO many articles written on gaming these days have little credibility and are often times made by people who are interested in "generating more traffic" or being "SEO friendly" or churning out so much content that the casual reader wouldn't even know how shallow the work really is. They have as much to do with journalism as oranges have to do with nuclear fission. I used to work back in 2011 in research/marketing, often writing articles about digital mobile tech, smartphones and tablets. One key standard I had to gladly live up to was that I HAD to cite my sources (which is required for any research really) and to properly research everything I needed to. My boss often times asked me "How do you know that statistic/number is real?" He asked me not out of spite or to stress me out but to simply see if I was doing a good job and could back up my claims when I made them. So when I read an article or see a report on some game, I also view it from the perspective of someone who did a similar job in the past. WHen I see reporters constantly "giving their opinion on something" and that's 99% of their content, that is NOT reporting. That's stating your own individual perspective. That's blogging .That's personal subjective review. That is NOT reporting. Reporting is about presenting facts as objectively as humanly possible. NOT giving your personal opinion on something. When you hire a reporter to cover a game and play it, he has to go open minded about it and be patient with the tutorial & instructions. The format of their content is also weird and nonsensical to me. "Choose my adventure" where people tell the writer what to do? What sort of gaming experience is that? Sounds good for a twitch stream, but for something that's supposed to be journalism? When you try to combine entertainment with reporting it can often times lead to disasters if you're ALSO streaming while doing it and allowing your viewers to tell you what to do/what not to do. It's like an invitation for trolls to ruin your game. In that case the reporter should only report the experience he was asked to have. If I told him " do a meditation grind" , his feedback would have been bad since meditation objectively is frustrating in wurm , more frustrating than any skill. What sort of objective reporting could come out of such a gaming experience when you let your viewers/readers tell you what to do? Is that reporting or just regular online content made for inbound marketing/views/ad generated trafic, etc? Because that person should have his title changed to "game streamer" but NOT reporter. That's my personal issue with this situation. You don't get to wear a title without having to live up to its requirements. The guy in question might be an awesome person that has a title that was given to him by the company but his actual role and job might be something else entirely.

I really wish I could store saddle bags and horse shoes in my saddle rack. I would like to be able to keep these horse items all together. It seems very reasonable to be able to keep them there with the saddle. The saddlebags especially, even if not the horseshoes. Why don't they go in there?

Well just to play devil's advocate here, I think that for the purposes of that particular series titled Choose My Adventure, he is playing the "regular Joe," and taking his readers on an adventure into unknown territory, complete with all the misadventure (and misinformation, and missteps) that goes along with that type of series. I do not believe for a minute that it was intended to be a definitive review of the game by a "reporter." It's a fun series actually, you should try reading some of the other installments on other games. Sometimes it's downright funny what he thinks when he runs into certain quirky things in some games, when you're sitting there thinking Yikes, no wonder, he's doing it all wrong. lol This is what staff posted in response to some of the comments: "Bree Royce Choose My Adventure isn’t a review or constructive criticism or a comprehensive research piece. It’s a let’s-play series where the writer usually goes in as a newbie and lets the game and the readers (through polls and comments) decide what he sees and does and experiences next over the course of several weeks. Much of the point of the series, which has been running close to 10 years across dozens of games with the same format, is to reveal the character of the community through its votes and advice and to examine how accessible the games are for typical MMO gamers in 2020, people who do not generally download the syllabus and study wikis before playing. It’s certainly done both here. PS: He played the tutorial. He discussed it in the last piece. I also went through the tutorial a few weeks back and my opinion is Chris is being being charitable as to its state here. This is a problem with many old games, including many of my favorites (ask me what I think of UO’s and SWG’s garbage tutorials). That isn’t his job to compensate for – it’s the games’. Edit: The OP came back and literally accused our writer of lying, so yeah, we’re done here, locking thread." So, we can either take him at his word, and I see no reason not to since all the other games in the series (over a 10 year period) appear to be exactly that, or we can continue to insist that it's a journalistic review of the game and that they're outright lying on Wurm for some devious purpose and intentionally misleading people. I just really have a hard time understanding why so many are so determined to "prove" the latter, at the expense of our image as a community. The community in any game is often the single most important thing to people considering a new game, and in my opinion Wurm has one of the best communities (with a few exceptions). It's a shame that we don't seem to care that much about showing our better side sometimes. edit: Someone has just recently posted a beautiful, informative, how-to advice response to the articles. That's so refreshing. We need more of that. I'm too stubborn to turn off my ad blockers to make an account over there so I could post, so that leaves me out. lol. I was tempted though. edit to the edit: That someone was @Amata. Thanks Amata for your friendly, level headed and informative posts there. It's too bad that had to take the form of damage control but still I think it's good that you did it. Amazing how you packed so much info into those posts. lol. Well done. Hopefully the writer hasn't just thrown up his hands in disgust & aversion, and will give it another shot (using some of your advice) as he had originally intended. Sadly I have a feeling he won't.

And I did not take that article as being a "journalistic report" myself. It's obvious a whole lot of people did. I saw it as a Let's Play kind of thing where his readers are along on the journey with him. I read a bunch of his other games he covered and it's pretty much the same. Looks like everyone was having a good time and even though he was sorely misguided on a few things in the games I was somewhat familiar with, nobody seemed to care or jump in and lambaste the guy for being misguided. Some, where existing players actually commented it was all friendly and giving him tips to correct misconceptions. I haven't read them all, but to be perfectly honest the only one I've seen so far with outraged fans posting, disgruntled banned ex-players posting, etc., is Wurm. To be fair, most of the posts were rational and level headed, like Katspurr and a few others. I really don't believe that the content of the article, or the guy's opinion of the game, or his accuracy of how to do things, or even his motivations mean diddly squat to most readers over there. But for those who read comments, maybe looking for more insight into the game, possibly from fans like in the other articles in that series, I think we as a community just have egg on our faces. Not like a lot of people would have given any of it too much weight, but tbh if I see things like that on other games I'm maybe looking at, I generally cross that game off my list because I have no desire to get into another game with a small, mean-spirited, cliquish, judgemental, argumentative community where you have to be careful what you say. Our community is not really like that, with a few exceptions, which is why it bothers me that we somehow manage to consistently put out that impression wherever we go. And now we've done it again.

That seemed like a series of pretty normal reactions and impressions from a first time player. And the comments of the reviewer (sort of a blog style) seemed pretty neutral/tame, far from "Butchering" or "Skinning alive" the game.

I didn't see Wurm getting butchered, I just saw a confused new player using his editorial account to vent. Wurm has a steep learning curve for new players, that's part of what makes Wurm so great, because achievements here are truly earned, as apposed to achievements in many other games, which are tossed around casually and easily obtained... that's what many gamers are used to now; games that are inviting for the masses, Wurm is inviting to a much smaller niche that can appreciate her.

We're working on this, it was meant to be the case in the first place but as we had no sufficient time to test it (since the possible differences in an account that starts on a technically different cluster), we had to make it work through the portal only first. Ability to go to Defiance from the tutorial server is coming with one of the updates soon.

Venomous? The absolute most scathing line in his two articles to me seems to be and that does not come close to something I would assign enough intentional, predetermined malice to call venomous. If you can't find any review that casts any other game into a as-negative light I'd offer these pieces to you in which he does more than just call them confusing, complex, or obtuse; https://massivelyop.com/2020/06/09/choose-my-adventure-eve-online-is-already-a-bad-time/ https://massivelyop.com/2019/07/02/choose-my-adventure-tera-and-the-argument-in-favor-of-just-okay-gaming/ And especially this piece which I get the feeling you may have glossed over; https://massivelyop.com/2018/05/11/choose-my-adventure-ultima-online-we-didnt-need-to-do-this/ The only people sabotaging Wurm's reputation is us.

I beg to differ. If anything written in these two short articles, would have been addressed ingame, most of us, be it in CA help, local, kingdom, or in pm, would have reacted in kind, calmly explaining that the game is indeed old, some of the mechanics may appear weird (often to us, too ), that much is hard for a beginner. We would have pointed to misconceptions in a friendly way, offering advice and assistance. The author of those "misadventures" was aware that he was damaging Wurm by his account. He did, as a journalist, not the least bother for background research and information, and from his report, not at all in asking anyone for advice, though that is the most valuable resource at hand in any game. Not even trying to tap that resource is showing incompetence, or malice.

I am the OP there and I don't remember accusing anyone of lying. I kept all my posting there polite and on topic, without any accusations or personal attacks. So either I got ricochetted with was originally directed to someone else or there is some mistake. Many people pointed out that he had to skip tutorial or just to flick through it, but this is not the same as accusing someone of lying. They didn't do the proper research, and they met the backlash (I do not support any ad personam entries), a real value of media company is how it handles constructive criticism of the content they publish.

I get this when trying to drink from a large barrel on my deed using a character that is not a member of my deed. [18:06:02] That would be very bad for your karma and is disallowed on this server. Before this update she was able to. If I open the barrel and drink that way I still can, it's just clicking on the closed barrel that won't let me do it.

@AmadeeWe are walking in circles. They call themselves reporters, journalists, this is a media company, and they are its employees they are supposed to abide to journalist standards (like doing research BEFORE writing editorials). You can't turn on/off the standard for your position or profession when you see fit. You either are a journalist or not. These are bad practices, bad journalism and in fact it is trolling - I have a feeling these articles were meant to aggravate us to bring traffic. I am out of this discussion. I said everything I had to say here.

Maybe they worry ppl would just get the vehicle lead then hop on their fast mount and go 40km/h but that is not a problem as long as they make it so vehicles can only be lead if they have animals hitched to them (all slots filled) and the player issuing the command is on foot only. They dont even have to make it complicated just check if the vehicle has full hitch and the player is on foot then just activate the Lead option when right clicking the vehicle just like you would do with a mount. L.E. And then use the message "You cannot do that while mounted" like you get if you try to forage/botanize while riding.

You are correct that the response posts would be for the other readers, and as such it would have been good if only positive things were posted (hence me not posting, I'm not PC). That said, the dude *didn't even ask* for help in any way shape or form. That really strikes me personally, because I'm an extreme introvert and even I had the fortitude to ask a few questions in local/CA. You'd think someone reviewing a game on a predominately MMORPG site would want to, you know, play online with other people?
  42. 1 point
Well let us agree to disagree about that part. In my opinion, massively is not a complete amateur endeavour, they are aware what they are doing and what they can do. I simply disbelieve the naivete of the author. I have done some - mainly tech writing - journalism myself, and know about that profession. As Elentari wrote, writing down is only the last step and the last few percent of a report.

I agree with your first paragraph. I disagree with the second paragraph. Seems to me that the response in your first paragraph would have been the appropriate way to respond on the article. As I said elsewhere, it is very hard to express frustration in the written word without it coming across as criticism. And regardless of what we think of his writing, it's obvious he is a genuine newbie and was very frustrated as we've all been at one time or another, and therefore I feel is deserving of the same consideration we'd give someone in-game. Any misconceptions he may have put out there in his article could have easily been corrected in comments without making our community look the way we now look to their readers. And let's face it, we now look pretty damn bad over there.

No never and don't ever please. Mixing PVP with PVE worked out really very bad. PVP must be fully separated. Don't allow to stash away the PVP loot in PVE zones. No trade please between PVP/PVE, that distorted PVP gameplay to omuch on Chaos. I would never ever touch PP again if that happened, the same reason I've never played on Chaos.

I made a new char and was on tutorial today...it is so foolproof now, there are signs everywhere tell you exactly what you have to do. Considering I had a rage quit first day because I didn't get what does that mean to activate a shovel, this is a game start served on a silver plate. Criticism and disbelief is deeply rooted in me, but it has to be constructive and after some research done otherwise it is just, can't find a better word, bitching.

How is this different from farming/harvesting a tree someone planted off-deed? There are multiple systems to stop people from doing this. In this particular scenario none were used and the post is asking for the animals to be returned. 15 tiles per animal is astronomical? You did the math, if someone kept a horse without access to a water through and a lot of food in area that size, in most countries the horse would be taken away and the owner would face jail time or massive fines. Hitching post is equipped with those - wasn't used. Deed prevents that - wasn't used Branding largely prevents that - wasn't used. How do i know if a horse i found in the wild comes from a demolished off-deed pen or an upkeep-disbanded deed or someone simply releasing it when they moved to another server or from a maliciously bashed pen? How do we know if whoever bashed the fence (if it was bashed, since it only takes a few days for low quality fence to decay in perimeter) took the animals? What if the fence was actually bashed but no animals were taken by the person. If i find one of them on top of the mountain, do i have to get banned because i took it? What if someone did bash the fence and took the horses, does the whole GM team have to drop everything now and investigate the whole incident? We have the tools to prevent this from happening. They weren't used and OP admitted it. I sincerely hope they find their way back to WhiteBunBun but please stop trying to change the game rules to fit your personal idea of how the game should work, while we have multiple systems for this exact scenario in place already.

How is it NOT griefing? This is the definition of griefing according to the Game Rules: Activities that are not constructive or with deliberate intent to do harm to others. Obviously they knew that they hadn't built the yards or penned the animals. A moment's check would show who was caring for the animal. Bashing down a fence is the opposite of constructive and it can't be done accidentally, and was done to gain access to animals that someone else obviously had started to look after. It certainly seems to fit the definition of griefing. I have just recently cast of the shackles of deed ownership ("Property is theft, man.") and renewed my nomadic intent. I think I will wander your way and see what I can see (could take a little while, cause I sold my boat, too). You have pretty easy ocean access, though, so they could be anywhere. Was there any tracking information of use?
